GW2 is inspiring wardrobes
Whilst it’s entirely possible GW2 is the game that most directly influenced those two it’s not the first to come up with a wardrobe system.
Lord of the Rings online was the first one I heard about, but there may well have been others before that.
I’m glad to see it’s spreading though. It’s one of those features I really miss in all the games I play that don’t have it (including single-player ones). Before GW (1) I never really thought about what my characters looked like because I didn’t have any choice – I wore whatever gave me the stats I needed and lived with the look of it. Sometimes I’d compromise by carrying around a second set for non-combat situations but that was all.
Now I find I’m used to being able to choose what they look like independently of their stats and it really bothers me any time I’m stuck with an ugly armor set because it’s what I need.

You do realize Rift came out with their wardrobe before GW2 was released, right?
Jep even WoW has a wardrobe of sorts these days. In fact I think WoW had it before GW2 came out.
GW2 innovated on a lot of things, but the wardrobe isn’t one of them.

The people in WoW don’t seem to think much of their wardrobe. I just read a thread where they were discussing WoW’s lack of a wardrobe (decent wardrobe?) and wishing they had one similar to Guild Wars 2 and Rift.
ANet may give it to you.
From reading their wiki my understanding is that WoW doesn’t have a wardrobe system (one that saves all the skins you’ve used/unlocked for later use), just a transmutation system that lets you combine the stats from one item with the skin of another. But you still have to have both items in your inventory to do it, like GW2 at launch.

EQ2 was the first MMO i played that implemented extra outfit slots. Not sure if
it was before or after release of LotRO.
Aion also had a transmutation system like GW2s initial system. And Rift of course
also had a system like EQ2 / LotRO already since years.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Vanity storage has been a thing in MMO’s for almost a decade
City of Heroes had the best one; entirely separate from powers and abilities since day 1. Like Town Clothes but you could use powers with them.

Came to this thread just to say this. Few can touch CoH in character customization.
Rift had a wardrobe long before GW2 even existed.

And LOTRO before that and others as well. I found it laughable that this game didn’t launch with it. Certain systems come around in games that other developers should take note of because they are so good and say to themselves that they need to add it on their launch day features checklist. A wardrobe system is one such feature.
