GW2 is not living up to its potential

I played a lot of Guild Wars 1. It was a major time sink for me and among other things I have some really fond memories of Alliance Battles. I ended up making sure I had at least 30/50 of the HoM awards because I knew I would end up playing GW2 when it came out.

When I heard ANet say things like, “there will be no dedicated healer class”, and that you’d be able to explore the world by yourself and still be effective in combat, I was overjoyed. Not only did I think it was lame in GW1 that you had to take monks with you everywhere, but as a player I also felt hamstrung in that I needed to take 7 other people/henchies with me practically wherever I went.

So I guess its fair to say that I had a lot of expectations for GW2. And honestly I am a little disappointed. GW2 feels like a very shallow game in comparison to GW1. Once you hit lvl 80, your pve experience pretty much revolves around dungeons and event grinding in Cursed Shore. However, the dungeons are repetitive and un-fun (which I’ll get into below), and that pretty much leaves a major grind-fest so simplistic and repetitive that players have been mistakenly caught in ANet’s anti-bot web.

But I sincerely believe GW2 still has a lot of potential. There’s a dungeon revamp in the works and we’re getting a new zone next week and I guess if one has faith in the ANet devs (and let’s be honest, they HAVE been saying more or less the “right” things when it comes to responding to player criticism), then one should expect these changes to make GW2 a better game to play. And with that in mind I want to point out where things could be better :

*Dungeons
I’ve read a lot of threads on dungeons and why they suck and tbh I think every last one of them has missed the boat. The real shortcoming in dungeons is that the moment the fight starts, players lose pretty much ALL initiative. The entire fight mechanic is built around avoiding damage. Players need to avoid damage at all costs and they get 2 dodge rolls and “utility skills” to achieve this. Considerations like effective DPS and weapon choice come a poor 2nd. Frankly, this is absurd. In every fun MMO I’ve ever played, when it came to dealing with average dungeon mobs, playing well meant robbing the mob of his initiative. Where’s the build which makes you laugh cuz the mobs can barely scratch you? Or the chain-stun build which keep the mobs nicely disabled for your nuker friend so he can blow them to kingdom-come? GW1 had this element, and there were several ways of going about completely destroying trash mobs. Not so in GW2. No matter what, the dungeon mobs are always going to down you in a few shots if you ever get it in your head to attempt to trade blow with them. Until this part of the dungeon experience is changed, no matter what content you design, people are always going to feel like they’re signing up for a particularly masochistic game of dodgeball.

Added to this, dungeons lack a proper loot reward. I’m not saying the armour/weapons is a bad reward. But they’re account bound. You only do the dungeon if you’re actually looking to get a piece from the vendor. This by definition ruins the replayability of the dungeon. Sure, you get a few hardcore dungeon farmers who do it for the other drops, but as far as I can tell its a small subsection of the playerbase that actually does this. The elite dungeons in GW1 dropped currency that players could use to trade for other things they want. The fact that the currencies were desirable because they bought the most prestigious armour/weapons in the game is what gave the dungeons widespread appeal. Dungeons in GW2 need to have a similar kind of payoff in order to draw players into their depths.

*Zones
Where is the zone differentiation? Don’t get me wrong, each of the zones have a different feel to them and the atmospheres can be downright awesome, but… Where’s the unique mob drops? No matter which zone I’m in, the mobs pretty much drop generic level appropriate crafting loot and/or level appropriate random quality weapons. Which, if I were to guess, I would suppose is a direct part of the “all you need at lvl 30 is in a lvl 30 zone” philosophy, but where did it say that all of the rewards had to be solely appropriate to someone who is lvl 30?

There should be rare, level independent (i.e. as desireable to find at lvl 1 as lvl 80), loot that drops from certain mobs in each zone, and no two zones should share the same loot table. By doing this, it would actually matter if someone were in Cursed Shore or Frostgorge Sound or the Hirathi Hinterlands.

Part 2 since there’s a 5000 char limit on posts :

*Abilities
Whether I go full tank or build the glassiest cannon ever, my play style doesn’t really change. I’m mostly going to be trying to dodge out of the way of mobs and doing damage whenever they aren’t focused on me. Going from glass cannon to full tank mostly means a switch from being able to take 0 hits to being able to take 2. Tank builds can still do decent DPS. This basically means that tanks don’t feel tanky and glass cannons don’t feel very powerful. This leads to a feeling that it doesn’t really matter what gear you use or how you trait your character. While the abilities obviously have different effects, they aren’t very radical and this leaves combat feeling extremely repetitive and similar no matter which class you pick. If you want to specialise in something, it ought to be special, kitten it.

-
The overwhelming feeling that I get when I play GW2 is that it’s a game that was released too soon. It really has a lot going for it, but at the same time many aspects of the game’s design feels like the attention they got was downright superficial. But I’m really hoping that GW2 ends up being the rich experience it could be, and I think the issues I outlined above is the best place to start (at least from a pve perspective).

Your post is moot in my opinion (not trying to start anything here) for the simple fact that you say it’s not living to it’s ‘’full potential’’ when you’re not even playing the FULL game. Nowhere in this do you even include pvp which leads me to believe you haven’t spent time doing wvw or spvp.

How can you say ‘’not living up to it’s full potential’’ when you haven’t even played the second half of this game?

In GW1, different zones would drop different things. Take the Icy Dragon Sword as an example :
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Icy_Dragon_Sword
It only drops from a few mobs in a very specific area of the game. If you wanted an ICD, you either had to go there to farm it, or to buy it from someone who farmed the area.

Since there were many skins that were restricted to certain mobs/areas, it in turn kept those areas valuable to the playerbase. If you knew for a fact that Dusk could drop from, say, Sparkfly Fen mobs, that would give you a reason to farm there instead of in Cursed Shore.

Basically, some of the zones should have something unique about them which serves as a reason to farm that zone.

PvE and PvP are essentially two separate games inside one game. It has always been this way. The way they’re designed appeals to two different styles of gamer, and some people just won’t enjoy both.

Meanwhile, to get an “Icy Dragon Sword” (aka Jormag’s Breath) in GW2… You use the Mystic Forge. Yeah, it requires Corrupted Lodestones… but I agree with the idea that each zone should have different drop sets other than these lodestones. (Which ANet will probably do with future zones, like The Lost Shores.)

That being said I do mostly PvE however I disagree with the fact that PvE and PvP are two separate games for the fact that in both you still read and react to certain situations. They’re more like different ASPECTS of the game.

I’m sorry but you’re being silly.

I don’t have to know a thing about PvP in order to explain what I expect from the PvE side of the game. Changes to PvE don’t have to affect PvP and frankly I believe it is inevitable that the devs will throw in the towel and just have pve work differently on a fundamental level so they can preserve the integrity of the pvp system. Just like they eventually did in GW1 with the arrival of the “Ability (PvP)” skills.

At the same time, I have tried a few hours of SPvP as well as WvW. There’s a lack of depth to the pvp aspect of the game, too. But in my opinion the people who are speaking up about it have hit the nail on the head (which is not the case for PvE). They’re probably more invested in PvP whereas right now the PvP game doesn’t grab me and will probably fail to grab me as long as they try to promote it as an e-sport. However, I think ANet have every right to try to make it into an e-sport and if they succeed I will be very happy for them. But the cheering will come from the sidelines, not the front ones. :P

Point being, be careful what you assume about people and how familiar they are with the game just based on what they are commenting on.

Totally agree, the variety you get between traiting / gearing differently is minimal, this is further compounded by the relative lack of variety between classes and how they “solved” getting rid of trinity, by bascially making every class a DPS class with a self heal, a bit of CC and some utility tacked on.

Nor does it help that classes are somewhat simplistic, both the the lack of skills / variation of skills and the whole simplistic traiting system, which again just leads to a lack of variation.

The overwhelming feeling that I get when I play GW2 is that it’s a game that was released too soon.

Very much so and it is precisely why games companies get stick, it is no good having the motto “when it’s ready”, then releasing a product a very, very long way short of being ready.

The way I see it, not allowing for glass-cannons or tanks shows that Arena Net stayed true to getting rid of the holy-trinity. If you look at the lore behind the dungeons, the dangers within are feared by the inhabitants of Tyria! It would be silly for a group of adventurers to come by and have one of them simply stand in the face of the enemy laughing at his pathetic blows (tank). & the glass-cannon who just pulverizes the boss because he has been hard training for a month’s time.
When you say that building tanky allows for no more than taking 2 hits extra, I can only think of how that’s fine! Your stats and skills should synch as to allow you to alter your playstyle only enough to get down your combos while surviving, not regenerating to max HP. I do not want people to have the ability to change from a wrecking ball to a block of god-metal. This forces people into pro-builds & into 1 to 3 very specific ways of playing each class.
Right now, it comes down to positioning and strategy, not build. Games where builds are do-or-die fail to keep me and my friends interested for long.

I went into Guild Wars 2 knowing very well that I would hate the dungeons, because I love tanking and it just doesn’t work that way here. So I guess there was no bad surprise there for me. But I’m already involved in end-game raiding in WoW, so I appreciate my more casual play style in this game.

The only disappointment for me is the personal story. It was supposed to be that the dungeons are the story of Destiny’s Edge and the personal story is my character’s own story, but from level 50 and on, it became the story of a character I really didn’t care for and my character took a background role and this is beyond lame. Now I’m much less interested in completing the personal story, I’ll do it but it can wait. I also have yet to see the effect of having a ‘dignity’ character on my story.

Other then personal story, I think that the game is as great as I expected it to be. Yeah, not much to do at level 80 besides dungeons, but if there’s no monthly fee I can just pick the game back after a content patch or expansion.

GW1 is an amazing game.

It’s very hard to top it with the things it did well.

That being said, imo, they could bring back some things from GW1.

They can make “explorable” zones that reset every time you exit.

They can bring back capturing skills that fill in the utility slots.

They can bring back stuff like the underworld and Sorrow’s Furnace and have them be hard mode zones.

Just got to give them time.

I would disagree. I find there to be enough difference in classes that I can have a difficult time choosing which class I want to play at times. Though I suppose you could be really nitpicky and be like “all melee hits things and all ranged shoot things” but then I would simply wonder how that is different than any other game.

Also you have to understand that this game is designed with a pvp backbone. Yes it does have a large pve section that you can level up and explore, but every player should notice that this pve section does not have gear grinds where the game devolves down to most time = most powerful.

The design of the game probably seems strange to many players who are used to playing pve based games where the pvp is just something they tacked on to keep people sated. However, i dont see that as a shortcoming of this game, but just an inappropriate expectation from the player.

I am one who loves GW2 and it’s game phylosophy and often times finds myself defending many of the criticisms slung at Anet on these forums. Having said that, I don’t think the OP is being malicious with his criticism and I can see his point in most of his post. The one area in which I greatly disagree is in his abilities section. I think it an exaggeration when he says that the differences between a tank and a glass cannon are nearly negligible. IMHO, there are huge differences between glass canons and tanks in GW2.

Much like many of the posters with criticisms of GW2, the OP only comes to his conclusion when comparing GW2 to other games (WOW again?). In that same light, a GW2 player could go on the WOW forums and criticize that game for being too “arcady” with their damage and damage mitigation. Again, I know that this is his opinion, and everyone is entitled to one, but that does not mean the game is “lacking,” “rushed,” or “unfinished.” It is simply an intended game design decision.

In that regard, I see GW2 as a very well thought out game. Yes, there may be bugs that need to be fixed, and there are perhaps a few other areas that need to, and perhaps in time, will be adjusted, but overall GW2 is a very good game and playing as intended.

P.S. – IMHO, one are in which Anet can improve the game is in armor and character customization but I think this will be fixed in time. A think a quick way that some of this can be quickly improved is by allowing us to transmute and wear any armor. It would be an adjustment that would require very little development effort but would go a long way toward satisfying many of the individual class armor complaints.

Lastly, we also need a better Dungeon Finder LFG functionality. This we need badly and we need it NOW!

We are not hamsters!

Now I wouldn’t agree, I’ve been up and down with my traits, weapon and armour stats, from glass cannon, to tank, to condition, to be honest I don’t think it makes a carrot of difference, or at least it’s hardly noticible.

I would like to see a LOT more difference…..

If your damage build lets see some proper damage happening.

If your a tank lets see you take a real pounding.

And if your condition lets see some proper condition numbers, not a puny 25. (Or whatever it is).

As my Ranger would say “Time to do some real damage” errr no it just doesn’t happen.

Yoh, periods and paragraphs are your friend.

I don’t understand why you complain about not being able to go toe-to-toe with dungeon mobs, since you can do a whole lot more than just dodge. Blind, daze, knockback/down, root, cripple, freeze…you can do a heckuvalot to avoid being hit. This is why a good dungeon group doesn’t get wiped; not because they have ridiculously high healing power or toughness, but because they know their skills and how they interact with others. Team synergy isn’t evident in world PvE, but in the rest of the game that’s what separates good players/teams from those that are not.

There has not been a large enough quantity of game-breaking bugs or glitches that tells me that the game was released too early. From my experience, it has had a very good launch, and so far the slate for future expansions is on track.

Solid, isn’t the big patch supposed to fix a few current ranger build issues?

This. There’s a very low ceiling to tactical variation in GW2. Most builds center around one or two key traits and differ in small but significant ways, but you can’t specialize around a particular tactic—not really, anyway.

The game doesn’t let you specialize in the way GW1 did. It doesn’t let you specialize in the way any MMO does. GW2’s combination of middling traits and high-cooldown utilities lead to a situation where nearly every playstyle focuses on dealing damage, with small variations toward or away from survivability, conditions, burst or support.

I think it’s a problem, and one that I hope the dev team will address over the next year. This isn’t something a patch or two will fix.

I agree that the zones would benefit from more to differentiate them. I would love if there was a unique looking set of armor on the karma vendors for each zone. Unique skin weapons that are specific to a zone that you obtain from a variety of challenging methods. Dungeons that are similar to the ones in GW1 in addition to the current type dungeons.

Hopefully content like this can be added over time through updates.

I don’t see how you can call it a ridiculous statement when it’s obvious. Even ArenaNet acknowledged that dungeons were unfinished. The game is missing basic features like guesting and player rankings, and even features from the original Guild Wars like gear/skill recalling, GvG and Observer Mode.

Hell, even the tooltips are unfinished. I love reading, “Heal allies when you cast a mantra.” Nah, it shouldn’t say how much it heals, or in how large of a radius, or whether or not it includes my character. The tooltips even refer to stats that don’t even exist anymore like Malice and Shredding.

When I heard about the release date I had doubts that the game was finished. “ArenaNet hasn’t even implemented cast bars yet? Surely they will by release…?”

Nope.

How can you say ‘’not living up to it’s full potential’’ when you haven’t even played the second half of this game?

If he already thinks the first half of the game does not live up to it’s full potential, how exactly does playing the second half change that? Living up to it’s full potential would mean that all aspects of the game are making him happy, he posted about one that isn’t.

As for the game, at this point you might as well build a tank character with all your builds, pve or pvp, it’s just better suited for the play style of this game, because as mentioned being a glass canon does make that much of a difference. You might as well build for survivability since we’re being forced to play dodgeball every single fight.

I feel like most of my characters have to be built with 20-30 points in either power or precision, and then 20-30 points in both toughness and vitality traits, since I’m building mostly for pvp, but I get to worry less about surviving when in pve. Except for my necro which is 30 power, 20 precision, and 20 toughness lines only because of death shroud.

I too am disappointed with the lack of variety for skills and builds. I loved making builds in GW 1, the amount of customisation you could do was nothing short of epic. I don’t like how they brought it down to roll at the right moment or die regardless of class or build. Did your combo? Used your heal and utility skills? Enemies only at 2/3 of their health? Theres no choice but to bail out and run leaving your team to fend for themselves. One shot kills never impressed me in anyway, and they will never feel anything but cheap. I do not like to see how every enemy you encounter in a dungeon will brutally violate your character, reminding you how weak you really are and there is nothing you can do about it. Can’t change build, can’t rely on skills with insane cooldowns. Offcourse I understand they wanted to get rid of the holy trinity, but is that worth killing off all those customisation options?

You don’t need to be level 80 to experience the game, that isn’t the way it was designed. It was designed that you get to level 80 as you experience the game, so for the people who bum rushed to level 80 thinking that all the good content is at the “end” are now disappointed. The entire game is endgame content, It wasn’t designed to be rushed through, it was designed to be experienced. Sure there aren’t many “level specific” things to be done at level 80, but there is a down leveling system for a reason. If you bum rushed to level 80 without second thought, maybe you should run around the world, explore I’m sure you’ll find something interesting, and if not then you’ve missed the point entirely.

My thoughts exactly. However, I do have to say that there needs to be a much larger variety of skills available. Personally if you can unlock ALL your skills by max level, there’s something wrong…

Thank you xarog for putting into words what I keep thinking every time I play dungeons.

And that thing you said about, 0 hits to 2 hits … dude I feel ya.

Good luck, I hope someone from anet takes a serious look at your dungeon notes.

“GW2 will be a big mistake. Anet should should just continue with GW expansions and revamp it to a Persistant world.” Yes i’ve said that a long long time ago.
To those who know me in GW knew that i said so

Guildwars 2 is only the name but sadly its not Guildwars.
The main attraction of GW is the Skills Combination, GvG, HA and AB.
But NONE of that is available for GW2.

250 years has gone. Move on people!
Unless the expansion is called Faction 2 lol!

You speak like if it was a bad thing. I would never have purchased this game if it was anything like Guild Wars 1. The only thing I’d like to see make a comeback is the multi-professions, but I can live without that.

one word —--> lol!

Really? That’s your only argument?

Look, Guild Wars 1 did a lot of good things such as making gear more about looks then stats and introducing the B2P model, but that game’s skill system was overwhelming and its PvE was attrocious. I don’t agree with every solution they found when they designed Guild Wars 2, especially for dungeons, but Arenanet did what they had to and as a whole Guild Wars 2 is A LOT better then Guild Wars 1.

Sure, there is a couple of things they could do to keep the spirit of its predecessor, such as having you hunt skills and having a pool of weapon skills for each weapon instead of fixed skills (ie: shields have 5 skills and you pick 2 for slots 4+5). I would be 100% behind such a change.

But going back to having 600 skills with 3/4 of them being conditional or near-copycats of each other and the whole system being so complicated that the average newcomer has no choice but use PvX? No thanks.

After playing this game for a few months and trying out four different professions and leveling one to 80, I feel that something is missing.

Unlike other MMOs, the professions in this game are like Jacks of all tricks but Masters of none :I

This is MHO.

GW2 is not living up to its Hype

fixed that for you.

im inclined to agree with a missing desire to play, i cant put my finger on it tho.
i think its a pure lack of choice as to how i play my characters
does not help that at first it was screwing with me physically with the nauseating FoV and now with common black screen crashes preventing me from even playing when i want to

The really big killer for me that I hate in most games is the instancing of zones… If I’m suppose to be immersed in a living breathing world… why am I going through instance portals into the next zone? I want to walk into that next zone… I get it helps load times but I’d take the hit on load times if everything was linked together. Other than that the PVE can stay as it is as long as they expand on dynamic events being more dynamic.

Rift has no loads, no instances in the open world, its all seamless. Just bringing it out there because the technology is there to do it. Why Anet choice this ancient method, who knows.

I disagree, GW2 is very much living up to its potential. Besides, you just have to be more patient.

An 8 year old game did it (WoW) Each continent has no load times unless you go to another by boat. Not sure why other games don’t do this.

I played Guild Wars 1 about a month after release. I remember once we hit 20, all there really was to do was cap some elites, Underworld/Fissue of Woe or PvP in the Hall of Heroes, Team/Random Arenas or GvG.

It wasn’t until a few months before factions came out when they added Sorrow’s Furnace. And Factions brought us a few more dungeons and PvP maps.

This game is 2 months old and you’re comparing it to Guild Wars 1 content which wasn’t released until exactly one year after its original release.

Not able to stand and tank dungeon mobs or boss? You’ve obviously never rolled an AH Guardian.

Just did TA the other night and killed the bosses by just standing together in the symbol and beating them to death. No dodging required.

Things like this can be done. Just because people have not found out how does not mean they do not exist in the game.

Op your playing the game completely wrong as so many and with wrong mind set.

First rush to 80 ans skip most content well what can i say. econdly you can easyly go back to lower areas and have as much fun as in ORR even when your lvl80.

Constant dungeon runs is own fault game is so much more.

If most of you open up your minds and realy explore what GW2 has to offer you would not have made this topic its realy SAD most of you always limited your own experience and blame it on developers and game.

PVE in this game is RICH and with PVP WvWvW/SPVP game is awesome.

P.S Many times im in a low lvl area where i find some event and with maybe 2 or 3 fighting some boss is a experience ive not seen in any game ive played thats beauty of GW2 the fights can be tence and GREAT.

oh look another white knight telling us how to play our game …
wasnt this the MMO we could play how we want or was that just another lie in the manifesto ?

Mavaho;

seriously. some people do like the exploring part pf GW2 and don t feel that mmo are “competetive” or they simply don t need that.

and yeah, people don t play games all the same way.
GW2 is different, it tries to be, is it perfect? nothing is.

but if you dont like the pve, the spvp and the wvwvw.

do yourself and ourself a favor. complaining wont change much, especially without any clear suggestion like you do. and even then… its not going to change tmrw.
GW2 is a step in the good direction for the mmo world, elder scroll online (check new video) seems to take a LOT of GW2 ideas.
probably they ll improve on it. such is how the world goes.

so why lose your time?? you are simply not making sense.

Apparently the OP has had bad experiences with dungeons. So he, like many others with bad experiences want anet to change dungeons solely for them.

1. In most cases you were in a poorly coordinated group and failed. I don’t recall ever having to dodge every sec of my dungeon experience. What I do recall is dodging when I see a big attack coming or using skills to negate or mitigate damage if I so happened to prematurely use up my endurance.

2. GW2 doesn’t have team play like chain stunning a mob to death while your friend nukes in the back? Sounds lame and mindless. GW2 has combos, which are very helpful, use them.

I do not want to project, but it appears your idea of fun comes from the sensation of having monsters being not very challenging. I do agree with your other problem about items being exclusive to specific dungeons.

This can be problematic, since it can force players to run the same dungeons repeatedly to obtain what they want. While not being able to experience another dungeon. Dungeons do have different paths however, which takes a bit away from the dungeon runs becoming stale. However, I’m not sure if this is quite enough.

I imagine if tokens for example were universal, all that would happen is everyone would pick the dungeon they found the most easiest to complete. Which would be worse than what we have now.

I had a lot of expectations for GW2…

I found the problem… but that’s YOUR problem, not the game’s.

No,NO,NO that is YOUR problem. The game Devs, Posts and interviews all hyped it to be this way. And the trailers ya those 2. No those expectations were given to us by the developers and their marketing. They sold the game that way – where do you think these expectations came from?LOL Some people I tell you

Stop passing blame on people we really do deserve it. And frankly it is the games problem because if people leave anet turns the lights off. Feedback right now is of vital importance because of what they did wrong and how to correct it for new content.
