It’s bin a while last time I played GW2 last time, but to be honest when I played it I loved the game.

I have always bin more of a console guy. So when the FF14 Beta hit PS4 I was chocked how good it played. There were a bunch of people playing, comparable to GW2 launch days. It has some issues but nothing that cant be fixed.

I don’t know if its the romantic in me but if FF14 can make the jump to PS4 or XONE and I think it will succeed in being profitable, I cant see why GW2 could not do the same. If one MMO could make the jump, GW2 is the one.

And to all of you who think Sony would not let them for different business reasons. I say to you, If there’s a will there’s a way.

Thoughts!

The issue here is money.
MMORPG-ing on consoles is still very young. And to develop a client, specially for an allready existing game not opitmized for consoles from the start, asks for big investments. On top off that it is questionable if it will be profitable for them in the end. It would be a high-risk investment. Also consider that NCsoft (the publisher) has not had any experience with console games, and if they would wanted to look into that they would likely be first going to console with a more trusted game genre. For example, Square Enix first brought Tombraider to the console before going there with an mmo.

So I am not seeing this happening any soon. Anet or NCsoft have no commercial need. The market for PC-games is booming and going console would be a high risk investment.

I totally agree one 90% of what you are saying. But I still think it’s doable. If you lock at the lowest specs required to play GW2, the new consoles should manage that.

I love to see a healthy PC market. My pint is if NCSoft and Anet make a console port they would have spreed there risk significantly. The initial costs will maybe hurt, but in the long run I am sure it will pay of.

Yes off course it is doable, but it is not financially intersting.

It’s a huge maybe… But only in a lot while. It’s not just about the specs, but MMORPG in a console, especilly with the PC users combined might give an unwanted effect. Especilly since sometimes verbal comunication (chat) is essential.

Persionally, I can see this happen, but not in another few years, and possibly not in GW2, but in some other newer mmo of the series.

IF this were to ever happen, I would hope it would be a LOOOONG way down the road. They need to focus all their attention on the game itself right now, and not worry about porting it to consoles.

Reason why I started this thread was is I just started playing the Final Fantasy 14 Beta on PS4 and it was great with just a controller. I love the GW universe and the gameplay from GW2 and would love to see it on a console. If FF14 skills can be mapped on a controller then I an surten it would not be a problem mapping GW2 skills and other stuff like inventory on it.

I feel like the PC elitist/pride is making people think the game coming to consoles is a bad thing. When if(and that’s just if) the game manages to hit the consoles that would mean the community would get so much bigger and healthier. That would not take anything from the PC version. Anet knows how to make PC games. I have hard time thinking they would just abandon the market that made them to what they are today.

I don’t play anymore. But what I have read on forums and Internet they have managed to give all of you who still play free content, that’s free of charge. I cant see how people are complaining. It maybe something wrong with the community?

Just because it is free doesn’t mean it is always good. The high frequency of updates comes with a price, the gemstore not being the “only skins and not pay2win” shop anymore.

A.Net looked into consoles but I think they scrapped the idea and right now they are pretty busy.

That’s true. What I have read on the Internet they have like 4 teams working on different thing inside Anet. I would just like to know if it’s ever going to happen or not. As the game is great and it deserves to be played by more people. I feel as good as the game is it hasn’t got the deserved attention.

The game needs to continue to grow and evolve. Especially with permanent content. If they were to do a console port, then I would hope they would hire a totally seperate team to work on porting it over. That way the main dev team can still focus on new content.

A port will always be a port. The game assets are finished and no new content is needed for a port. They would maybe need to hire some new people who knows how the new consoles work. Then its would just a mater of porting it over. I would actually prefer if Anet made the port them selfs, to minimize the screw ups.

I really hope they do not port to PS4 or X-Box One. There are just to many limits to consoles and I do not want those limits effecting content for the game.

I know there was talk before GW2’s release of a console game being made by Arenanet/NCSoft but don’t know if it ever progressed past just talk.
The combat mechanics of GW2 would work ok on the consoles but the none combat side of things could well be difficult/complicated to navigate with a controller

It’s a lot more complicated than you might think. The game has to go through new optimizations. You have to set up a new UI to work with a controller. It’s not as easy as, “Ok let’s port it now.” Blizzard hired a console port team for Diablo 3 and it took them several months to bring it to PS3. And D3 is arguably a lot less complicated than GW2. If it were a game like Bioshock, then yeah a port is much easier.

I really would like to see this happen. I love the idea of me roaming with a console user and everything, BUT, realisticly speaking, I just don’t see it happen from ANet’s side in a long while, that’s it.

I’ve seen some players play GW2 with Xbox controllers and they are doing more than fine. A lot of them are even better than a solid PC – keyboard user.

they do that with a mod, it allows them to play the game in a tera way.
without the mod it’s not gonna happen, you’re also losing out on about 90% of all the features a PC user can use.

anyway, that was not the point, the point is that you ether need a really strange controller or the game needs to be adjusted (and limited) to fit a controller.
look at DCUO, they made that game for both PC and PS3 users, it’s maybe fine on a controller but it’s really limited on a PC.
just look at all the ports, most of them suck so much that it’s simply unplayable. (i have a PC version of DMC 3, the game is wonderful but the port….ugh)

I don’t despise consoles at all. I don’t currently own any of the new systems, but I’ve owned plenty of other ones. Having said that though, this type of game is much more enjoyable to me on a PC. Single player RPGs and Shooters, I don’t mind playing those on consoles at all and sometimes I even prefer them to be on consoles. But an MMO, I don’t ever see myself playing one on a console unless it’s designed from the start to be played on one. Which GW2 wasn’t. I like my Razer Naga too much to ever use a controller for this type of game.

Anet may do this down the road though, and I think it would be successful if ported over well. I’m not against the idea at all. Like I said though, I would hate for part of the Dev team to have to work on this instead of new content for the game. They could hire a small console team to do these types of projects. (just like Blizzard did)

Connect your PC to your TV with an HDMI cable and you’re all set.

Just like you might have a big setup for your TV in your living room, many people have equally (or more so, with a custom build PC) dedicated setups for their PCs. For example, I have spent the value of a PS4 on the peripherals for my PC. And my monitor and keyboard were cheap and my audio is barely there. In that sense, what you are asking is no different than the people with 5000$ PCs complaining that the game does not look like Crysis.

mercury touched on a few good points, but it still remains a possibility.

The PS4 has currently sold roughly 5 Mio. untits and is going strong. That’s a pretty healthy install-base for such a young product. So I’d wager there certainly is a market for such a game.

With GW2 making 100 Mio. a year, I think there is a financial incentive to try the PS4.

However I see issues with the game itself.

GW2 is really built on an outdated engine with outdated software. It’s written for 32-bit software and DirectX 9.

The PS4 however is 64-bit and uses an modern API, probably similar to Mantle.

Software wise you’d basically have to rewrite the entire basis for the game to make it run well on the PS4. Not impossible but a long and tedious task, especially if you don’t have experienced console developers working on it.

Then there’s the actual game-play itself. You’d have to add some sort of voice-com, since chat won’t be an option, rework the entire UI for controllers and find a way to get the control scheme to work. But compared to the engine rewrite these tasks are fairly trivial.

Long-term it might be a good way for NC soft to gather experience developing for the new generation of consoles. They could learn a lot from it, especially if/how MMOs work on consoles.

But it would be a long and costly process and I don’t know how risk-averse NC soft is.

It’ll never happen.

But if it did, it would have to be PvE only.

Wvw and Pvp would be lacking in player numbers, not to mention terribly clunky.

Or if they were to combine the PC and console populations, console players would be trashed in PvP and WvW by PC users.

Ps4 and xbone audience is still small. And GW2 needs more attention at fixing certain issues first anyway.

ALL IS VAIN.
PvP modes are the “endgame” in all MMOs.
Stop failing at PvE, and fix WvW/SPvP. Thank you.

Maybe in GW3 but it is very unlikely GW2 will be on PS4 or XBox one.

As mention before the cost is high and the risk is great.

While I am not a game designer, my experience in IT suggests that it is often easier to write a new program than to convert an existing one into another platform and/or language.

Ok I didn’t know that. That was some great points you brought to the table. I will hold my thumbs for GW3.

One thing I a surten of is there will come a bunch of mmos to the consoles. We already have DCUO but there are more coming in the near future. FF14, Planetside and Elder Scrolls Online. The consoles will be a viable market for mmos.

ANet could get a couple of guys, put them in a corner somewhere and tell them: start porting now! Seeing as how GW2 is financially doing well (as far as I can tell) now would be a good time to reinvest in the game. Consoles might bring in a few more customers, particularly since the console MMO market is still relatively small, so the competition wouldn’t be to bad. Of course with the Asian port currently under way… Of course if ANet was smart they’d probably start looking at how they could adapt the code base (since they’re probably going through it in anycase) to make it easier to possibly port over to console
