GW2 on Steam
They don’t want to pay royalties to Valve. But ultimately they probably would have a lot more players. I am no pro though, ask one of the geeks here

Technically, I think Anet can bypass that. They can put up GW2 vanilla as a F2P game on Steam and simply let players discover they can buy HoT via this page… But maybe Valve doesnt agree to that, lol.
I seem to recall someone mentioning that Valve would take a cut from ingame sales as well if GW2 is on Steam. Or maybe it was just speculation, I dont really know. Either way, if thats the case it would probably be unacceptable to Anet (or rather, NCSoft).
Either this or NCSoft simply prohibits it – wouldn’t surprise me at all

Steam is a great platform for game publishers that don’t have the infrastructure to market and distribute their game. ANet/NCSoft does not fall into this category. Valve takes a fairly big chunk of a game’s income in exchange for marketing and distribution. This is fair, since Valve is a tremendous help to publishers that don’t have the means to distribute and market the game independently. But Anet has all the tools for distribution and marketing. They would be paying Valve for unneeded duplicate effort with GW2.
GW1 is a finished game that will no longer receive updates and generates very little income from in-game transactions. ANet gets its moneys worth out of Steam sales. But GW2 would wind up costing them a huge amount of money in the form of lost profit. Essentially, the normal distribution of the game would be in direct completion with the Steam version with no benefit to ANet/NCSoft. It would just be bad business.
…. plus… Steam is EVIL

Steam takes a profit from cash shop purchases, as such gw2 would likely never release on it.
