GW2 on linux? Steam onboard.
They are not gonna do it because linux is not that popular. Steam is only doing it because they are afraid, microsoft is going to crush their main source of income. I don’t think steam will be successful in what they are attempting to do.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Steam is doing it because why willfully ignore 5% of the market share that you know are interested in computers?
With Microsoft seemingly on a rampage to murder its own future in gaming and the home desktop in general, the future is wide open for Linux. Add the clout (and money) of Steam to the mix, and I’d say it’s looking bright.
No, I’m not running Linux just yet, but it has been, is, and increasingly will be an alternative, just in case Windows 9 really seals Microsoft’s fate with a closed app-store and lack of a classic desktop. I could live with just TF2 for my gaming needs to avoid that.
To clarify, there is an almost 10-page thread in the suggestion forum about this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/A-client-for-Linux/first.
It was moved to the suggestion forum by an Anet moderator. That being said, I remember reading a quote not too long ago. Apparently a linux client HAS been talked about, but it is not a priority.
a few notes:
1. They are using Cider to port to mac, which is not a true Opengl port. This means the port will be suboptimal, but it should work well enough for most mac players. In my mind, this means that Anet does not currently have many developers who know how to use Opengl. Thus Guild Wars 2 on linux is not going to be a reality for a while.
2. Wine works with GW2. Granted, there is a 20 fps drop and the market doesn’t work without a patch, but it works. It also worked nearly flawlessly with the first game. What does this mean? Anet still thinks they have their bases covered with linux. Why port to a platform that already has the game running?
3. In the suggestion forums, it is by far the hottest topic. After the introduction of windows 8 and valve’s switch to linux more individuals are trying to learn about this quircky OS. I would argue that eventually there will be a linux port, but not this year, or maybe even the next, but the potential is there—if we play our cards right.
4. Blizzard’s WoW has a linux port. Many other AAA devs are porting to it.
5. Anet could potentially give the linux community bits and pieces of their source code and have them port the game for them. This would not be too far of a stretch
Sorry for the long post. TLDR: There is another thread with a bunch of solutions. Check it out. No linux port probable, though.

Actually, Microsoft is more and more moving towards Handheld iOS and Consoles.
Why the handheld iOS? Well let’s just refer to Microsofts splended Windows 8.
besides that, Windows 8 isn’t exactly astounishing around sales, because alot of users are moving towards Linux and Mac.
So, to bridge it it’s actually a splended idea, not even close to something like that.
Steam is swimming in money as it stands, can’t say the same about microsoft.
So, what they want to do is invest in things that could increase their income.
Now with Making a linux client for Guild Wars 2 on the other hand.
Is something that at it’s current state is still questionable.
Steam is doing it because why willfully ignore 5% of the market share that you know are interested in computers?
Valve is doing it because they only have to port one piece of software (Steam itself) to open a market for potentially hundreds of games.
/Yes I know they’re porting certain Valve games as well, the point is the vast majority of games they’ll ultimately sell to Linux users were written by other companies.
GW2 is the only thing that keeps me from switching to linux as my main OS on dualboot. If there is a mac beta client now I really hope they will consider doing a linux client too once the mac client will reach a high enough level or quality.
