Why not make GW2 available on steam? This would make new players check out the game and would be a generally good idea.

all is vain

120 million plus all the gems sales..I think they are doing just fine. They also have outperformed all financial estimates so far for the game.

Steam takes a cut of the profits, why on earth would ANet do that when they’re already distributing more copies than initially projected? Also steam’s gifting policy is not in line with ANet’s policy on serial numbers being account bound.

Digital sales straight from the site are easy and hassle free and the model seems to be working just fine.

Golemancy 101: total and complete catastrophic
failure is still a monumental success, assuming
losses remain within acceptable parameters.

As a Steam user myself I would love to see Guild Wars 2 on Steam, just for the simplicity of managing my game collection. However, GW2 is easy enough to get, doesn’t come with some crappy DRM that wants to know my life story, I can play it on every computer, it keeps itself up-to-date. This hassle-free game doesn’t need a distribution system. The Steam overlay works fine, just set up a non-Steam game in Steam and go for it.

Maybe someday. I see Steam as the way a company squeezes the last few $$ out of a title. GW2 isn’t there yet. Was GW1 ever on Steam?

GW1 became available on Steam fairly late in it’s life cycle.

I love Steam, but I don’t think GW2 needs to be there, I think they are doing just fine on their own.

Never understood the reasoning behind steam for PC games to me its just a updated version of Uplink for those that dont remember Uplink it was the first incarnation of a multiplayer platform for sega genesis that would allow access to the then relatively new intrawebs through your console which had no network code enbedded in its software which would immulate IPX networking.

God I miss kali and heat.net.

Many of the advantages of Steam already exist in GW2 – primarily the ability to download the game from anywhere and play as long as you know your login info.

Beyond that, Steam is a social network for PC gamers – it lets you keep in touch with friends and family that you play with and makes it very easy to invite people or join in their games. I also use it to give my kids games to their accounts and I don’t have to worry about lost codes or discs.

However, for GW2, I like it not being on Steam, I like to casually poke around the TP during the day without it looking like I just play all the time to my Steam friends…

Sounds to me its just a game lobby where you get inundated with ad spam where they want to put cookies on your comp to track your buy methods. Is there a lot of spam on Steam?

They still do F2P stuff on steam I believe.

?? What?? No lol.

Steam is pretty awesome actually.

I buy most of my games from steam, and has nice community features, and they support alot of indie titles.

Not just cookies. It’s essentially self-installed spyware. Which is ok cuz you get great deals if you buy from their store.

Steam has to take a cut of microtransactions, or something. I don’t remember the specifics. So, it’s unlikely that you’ll see it on Steam.

Most games now have a monetization strategy such as DLC, boosters, etc.

Steam takes a cut of the initial sale, but they also take a cut of any DLC or cash shop items – this works fine for some companies, but not so well for others.

If they didn’t do this, you could imagine a game that is “free” to download (no cut for Steam) and then everything of substance is bought (again, no cut for Steam). I think they had to go this way to avoid incentivising this sort of workaround.

Can’t you just set it up as a non-steam game? Or is there something more that you need from it being a true steam game?

I did it, just to let my friends know what I was doing, and it gives me the shift-tab overlay to see if anyone is out doing something else. Plus I can choose to launch it from steam or not.

Is that what you need? Or do you want integrated achievements and all that?
