GW3 & Spell-crafting
It wouldn’t work because every little person who thinks that they should have the most over powered power in the game would try to one up each other.
It can’t be balanced and therefore would not work for an MMO.
And what system allows me to make my own armor and weapons? I want to know so I can make really really cheap gear for my characters that seamless fits with how I think they should look and what weapons they should use.
I don’t think custom spells fits with the Guild Wars franchise. Each school of magic is very distinct and very set in stone as to what it does. A good spellcrafting system would need a more flexible style of magic like Elder Scrolls where there are no set archetypes for mages. A wizard is a wizard, and the only real variance between them is on an individual basis.
In a class heavy setting custom spells just don’t seem like they are worth the trouble.
I like this idea…
Since we can already make armour, weapons and what not…
Imagine a whole new engine where players can design and implement their own stat-oriented spells/skills?
Would it work? What would the limitations be? Who would support this idea?
Eh… Go back to TES. This isnt a game that CAN support such things, and the amount of work needed for it TO support it is…. better spent elsewhere on…. basically anything else.
Why the hell do people keep bringing up a GW3?
In an MMO. A system like this would be physically IMPOSSIBLE to balance.
This is much more suited to single player games where balance doesn’t really mean much.

This is another important point.
Even with thousands of POSSIBLE spells you can craft, every player would ultimately just end up using the three or four spells that massively out-perform all their competition. There would be no creativity involved. You’d just copy the successful spells other players have made that are the most efficient at what they do.
Basically meta spells instead of meta builds.
I had a spell in oblivion that would ignite whole city blocks on fire.
The people were not amused.
Yeah, this COULD be balanced, but really doesn’t make sense in the Guild Wars universe. I think higher spell customization (rather then just ‘spells’ being linked to weapons and utility) would be really awesome, but I think completely custom spells are unlikely.

1 damage, 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 wide AoE. Epic lulz to see guards bullrushing you way out in the wilds and give you a fine for countless assaults xD
Why the hell do people keep bringing up a GW3?
People remember GW1 fondly, many have rose-colored glass about the GW2 they played at launch, and so they want a fresh start, which they hope will be ‘better’ somehow.
(Not realistic, of course, but hey, we’re only human.)
Why the hell do people keep bringing up a GW3?
Because it will be fun
Well, I have to say I am surprised at the lack of creative responses to this thread.
Most of you have said that it won’t work, due to balancing, and not how it might actually work.
I personally imagine if there was to be a third instalment, that it would be several years from now, when expectations in the gaming experience will be at a higher tier than they are today. In that regard, I envisioned spell-crafting as a new option in a hypothetical gw3.
Surely, it could work?
