It was also an ecto sink but that’s beside the point.

The house always wins.

For me, the ecto cost was the inhibiting factor. Ectos were going for 40s at the time so even at it’s cheapest, it was 2 gold worth of ectos plus 40 silver a spin which is to rich for my blood.

So you want to remove the mystic forge from the game?

Simple answer: play something else.

In depth answer: it’s a video game. It isn’t life. If you are concerned about children establishing bad habits, don’t let them play it. I’m a parent and I have no issues with my kids playing this game. Why? Because my kids respect my discipline, teachings, and guidance. I’m not part of this whiny generation of parents that are all too concerned about "that’s not pc, I might hurt their feelings " etc.

It’s simple. Play it or don’t, but don’t push your one sided views onto other people when there is the incredibly simple option of simply uninstalling.

Looks like you didnt read the entire post.
I specificaly mention that the mystic forge isnt used so much now that there is an alternative for precursors and is used as a secondary method.
Gambling in general is a trade for expectation for something better, when people are promised riches if they put 250globs or 50globs or 10 globs and gold in a vendor that “promises” riches, they go mental and sell everything just to play that particilar mechanic.
Works as intended imo, keeps the gambling addics hooked and creates new ones as well.

Edit:Gambling habits and addictions carry over to real life behaviour, thats why i believe its important.
Really no concerned parents out there? Shame on you people.

At no point do those vendors promise anything.

Gambling is perfectly fine and healthy for the game as long as there’s nothing essential locked behind it. People with gambling addictions condition themselves to avoid temptations until they’re strong enough. It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to addiction-proof the world. It’s the responsibility of the addict and his loved ones to police that behavior.

As for concerned parents. Really? If you have issues with lessons or methods of thought a form of entertainment is instilling in your child, stop allowing them to access that entertainment. That’s your responsibility as a parent, not Arenanet’s responsibility as a video game developer. if you can’t teach a child to gamble responsibly, or simply not to gamble at all, then perhaps you shouldn’t be allowing them access to forms of entertainment that include gambling. Given the global gambling economy in the real world and the ease of access the internet provides to losing real money doing it, I highly reccommend the first two options rather than the last, and counter that allowing them to experience the effects of gambling and basic economics in a virtual space where no real assets are lost may actually be useful in teaching those lessons. Your mileage as a parent may vary, as may your desires for what lessons you teach.

“In my opinion i think these kinds of gold sinks must be removed from the game as they create and host behaviours that are best left behind casino and illegal gambling doors.”

America’s founding fathers weren’t only devout Christians but also understood it isn’t government’s place to legislate morality. The friend who raged in chat should take personal responsibility for his bad behavior and exercise responsible control and judgment. Gambling may be a poor choice but so is the government punishing them for it. Two wrongs don’t make a right. If a government does something that doesn’t maximize market freedom or individual rights they’re overstepping a line.

“Don’t forget, children that play this game too.Parents cant be always next to them when they play.”

They can learn the hard way with fake money. I learned not to buy dye packs after the Taimi kits went on sale during the three year anniversary since I didn’t get an exclusive. I now have all the electro dyes (electro blue from birthday present when it was going for 1,000g) because I bought most from the trading post and why I smirk every time I open a black lion chest and say, “This is why I don’t buy keys.” Though from one key drop from a mob I did get a total makeover kit which was awesome.

I detest any form of gambling in an MMO. I’d much rather have static and clearly established prices for specific items.

The problem there is as the game changes and things get introduced market values change. Dynamic markets can’t have static and clearly established prices.

It’s a teaching moment. Start young using M&Ms and a six sided die. Cost 1 to roll and on a six you get 5. Give them 10 M&Ms to start with and when they run out the bank, you, eat their bets.

You even get rewarded (in gold) for launching cows, if you bet right where it lands.

You will need 250 of those tokens btw, to craft the new legendary shortbow, which will shoot farting cows.

I have a reliable source.

As for concerned parents. Really? If you have issues with lessons or methods of thought a form of entertainment is instilling in your child, stop allowing them to access that entertainment. That’s your responsibility as a parent, not Arenanet’s responsibility as a video game developer.

And that is where you are wrong concerning gambling. There are actually age limits and laws governing who can be exposed to gambling. Let me guess, you’ve not had children of your own yet?

There are also definitions of gambling, which dont apply here. If your kid starts gambling in real life, that on you as the parent.

Gambling fake money and fake pink blobs is not covered by gambling laws for the same reason people aren’t arrested for assault when they stomp someone in PvP.

I actually professionally cared for children for seven years straight as a live in “manny”

If your children are gambling real money, that isn’t the game’s fault. That’s your fault and you are the one legally culpable.

Which supports his point.

If something is forbidden for minors in your area then you should not allow your minor children to do it.

No, it really couldn’t. Cash shop currency and gambling boxes were not invented by GW2. This issue has already been taken to the courts multiple times, in much more exploitative and predatory RNG lockbox models.
