After having made yet another new character, I think I finally understand why Anet chooses to censor people who are discontent with it.
“How can you rage over something that practically isn’t there till you’ve completed the game?”

This is a T-rated MMO, not a point-and-click adventure for 5-year-olds.
That’s how GW2 ends; not with a bang, but a whimper.

With the new Feature Pack, is there any hope to have this fixed? I barely play the game due to being unable to work on alts effectively due to the trait system, and the Living Story is the only thing keeping me coming back. Can we please get word on whether or not this is getting fixed? I’d love to be able to work on alts again, but right now it’s not worth it.

Having to do stuff for every single trait is a bit too much. Especially when you have to do things such as 100% area completions. That’s really no fun to do just for that 1 single lousy trait.

The general idea was good, making people go out and do something to get a trait, but in my opinion the things you have to do shouldn’t be more than killing some harder NPC, finishing a specific dynamic event… as i said, 100% area completion for 1 single I – VI trait is just way too much work for someone that doesn’t really feel like doing it.

And prices are too high so I refuse to pay for traits.
Making an alt is a pain right now, and what Anet should also be worried about is that I’m pretty sure this trait system is a turn off for new players.

In Guild Wars 1 caping an elite skill was perfectly made. Find a boss, kill him, cap his elite, job done. It was challenging, it was fun and it didn’t take hours to complete… :S

And those elites were acutally worth it, these traits… Meh not so much…

Does anyone else find it ironic that to unlock the Trait that halves falling damage, you have to do Obsidian Sanctum , the JP where it seems easier to fall than any other (especially where it goes pitch black) ?

If you’re on AG, I do obby sanctum often enough with my mesmer and will port guildies and such to the end.
(that goes for anyone, if you’re Aurora Glade, add me in game..and I can message you when I plan to do obby sanctum next. )

I hope you are right, but sadly this change was done for a reason. Doesn’t look like it had the players in mind. The best we can hope for is, somewhere down the line it effects their bottom line and they correct this HUGE mistake.

Not at all! First I applaud your post above about moving on. This shows the dev’s that making this decision to rework a perfectly fine trait system, may show lack of support amoungst players.

But WHY post childish flash video’s that may get probably the most important thread on this forum locked??? Keep it on track so the dev’s get good feedback and hopefully this will get straightened out.

In another couple of months, perhaps we’ll get a CDI on “Traits” in which we can all repeat what we’ve said in this thread while devs occasionally pop in to say, “Interesting. I can’t reveal anything we’re working on, but thanks for the feedback” and the few white knights we have left can applaud how well ArenaNet listens and interacts with the players.

It just sucks all the sense of progress at low to mid levels. Things will just be so…mundane and generic for almost all the leveling experience. I’ve really lost the urge to level a character now.

Me and a buddy tried to get a few of the traits in Orr that we need for our endgame builds. Welp, they’re impossible to get, since nobody will help us finish the event since it’s more profitable for the zerg to let the events fail.

Okay, sure, let’s log with our alts and get the other traits right? Oh, kitten . Look at that. They’re all in super high level maps on the other side of the world, completely unreachable. Oh, golly.

Guess i’ll have to live without traits now. Or… play another game.

Old system: you could try out different trait builds and learned early on that they were useful.

New system: traits are now locked away or expensive to acquire. randomly throw 5 in every line until you hit 80, then figure out exactly what build you want, and unlock those traits. You are left with a bunch of skills you haven’t unlocked, and a whole bunch of traits that you either can’t afford or don’t have the skill points for.

If you are used to the old system, levelling an alt under the new one can sap your will to live. If you are new player, you go through the game without having a clue about traits until you hit the 70’s.

GW1 had the perfect elite aquisition system- go out into an instanced area, find the (fairly fast respawn) elite boss, kill it, cap the elite, job done.

If they aren’t going to change back (which realistically they won’t do) then they at least need to change the targets required for them and the level of areas you need to go to in order to get them. And remove any of them from JP’s.

This new trait system basically made me stop playing all my alts (and by the way I was enjoying leveling them quite a lot lately), but when I saw just how much effort you have to put into acquiring a single trait I just said “No.”

On top of that kitten many have mentioned: No more improvising. Darn I feel bad for all the new players that met with this trait system…

Oh wait, they’re all probably already gone…

Finish a group meta event in a low level zone to get a trait that gives you 5% bonus damage when your endurance is not full.

Yeah Anet, thanks, I’ll pass…

Its like this: the more I play my necro, the more I realize that cost wise for me, it would be FAR more fruitful for me to just sink my money into multiple armor sets for my existing level 80 necro than it would be for me to sink my money into getting these traits since i already know trying to earn all of these traits is a joke. I play games for fun. I work hard enough in my day to day doing repetitious nonsense. I don’t need the same from my “things I use to try to relax”. Problem is, more and more things are making me want to steer clear of even my level 80s lately.

We know this wasn’t done with the (ahem! ORIGINAL) players in mind, to many disapproves of it.
We know this is not a gold sink, less alts and players = less gold being sinked.
We know Sept. has a feature patch coming out! Do the right thing Anet/NCsoft for the sake of the game and your reputation.

What will happen when the new players finally figure this out? Quit, like a few people I recommended this game to. This suggestion will not happen again in the current state!

It’s what Anet does lately. Most of GW2 was going from really good (GW1) to really bad. Heh

Unfortunately I’m pretty sure nothing will be changed about traits in this Feature patch. It might take another 6 months for them to realize that people are really kittened about it.

I honestly think that I will be quitting the game should nothing happen in this regard in the September feature pack. Sad, considering I have accumulated a ton of stuff in this game. Well, some of my guildies will get very rich if I leave!

So far, I have my norn ranger to level 32. I have not, and will not, attempt to get any traits for her until level 80. But I have to say, that map completion for the 3rd time is so repetitive, boring, unrewarding… I’ll be surprised if I get to level 40 before I just quit.

This is insane. Am a level 35 thief. To unlock the UnCatchable, which is in the first group of traits under Trickery, I have to either pay silver and 2 skill points OR complete a level 59 Personal Story chapter (Retribution). Why roll new characters if it’s that much a pain in the butt? This is ridiculous. Is Anet even listening?

No. According to some other post, they are. Let’s face it, do developers ever express remorse that what they did was wrong? I have never heard of a case. I can see no rational reason for this Trait change. I can see unlocking them with an event that doesn’t require a squad or isn’t 23 levels above when it becomes accessible. I never really appreciated the Trait-rage post-April patch, but now completely understand. My Thief will, sadly, remain level 36. Why bother playing it?

I have not been able to get up any enthusiasm for leveling a new character since the Feature Pack. Got one to 58 and was so bored that I deleted her.

My bank is full of boosters and junk that I’ll never use, and I have much gold and even a couple of thousand jewels that I really don’t need to spend. I had so many transmutation charges that I made special sets of armor and weapons for my key runs, but stopped that since there’s nothing in the chests that I need.

Still pop on one of my 80’s on occasion to do LS, a daily, or just mess around since it’s free.

Apologies but I don’t have the motivation to read through 38 pages to see if my suggestions and feedback have already been posted.

Unlocking traits
Unlocking traits by doing specific events really messes with the direction a player could be questing. They’d be forced to migrate to the other side of the map just to unlock a popular trait. The personal story kind of does this already but that at least gives continuity of traveling to the next location for the story. These are just non-achievements with a trait reward.

How about adding multiple events per unlockable trait to prevent the migration. Spread these events out evenly across the world map.

Tracking down events that reward traits
It’s difficult to keep track of all the events that unlock traits.

This could be easily fixed by adding a trait icon over areas of the map to show that an event there unlocks a trait.

The pace of unlocking trait points
Leveling up is an exciting experience when done right. In lots of games you’d get to pick where to spend your stat points, maybe some skill points, expertise, etc. In gw2’s launch you had that where each trait point would be unlocked every level past level 10. I don’t mind the rework on trait points, where less is more. But I really dislike the pace in which you get trait points and unlock them. Is it because you didn’t want to make the game too complicated for new players? Because at 30 when you now unlock traits, players are also bombarded with a new feature in the game, dungeons. That’s a lot of information to take in at once.

I think trait points should be unlocked at an earlier level and you should get these points more frequently. Give the last trait point at 80 but spread them out evenly. I don’t really understand why you have to wait a lot of levels then unlock 2 at once.

However, Isaiah, you need to also know that a lot of damage has been done by the 5 months of silence since the April Patch.
