basically his complaint is that it’s not a seller’s market.

it’s a buyer’s market AND buyers also have several other paths(and currencies) to attain what they want.

so, the economy is “broken” from the perspective of “how would this work as a real world economy” when that’s clearly not at all what the system is designed for.

True, the problem sets in when ANET is the seller. They want to sell goods (boosts etc) that people don’t need. The fashion (pets, armour skins and weapon skins) side has not been touched however which I really don’t understand.

The Economy is broken in many ways, his review while a bit out dated is still right on, it is broken..

Personally the lack of certain end game items (Tier 6 mats and lodestones) and allowing players to TP flip items 24/7 is whats help kill the economy slowly over time…

Judging by the numbers, GW2 is doing pretty well.

Which numbers? Sales != active players. And sales can’t be doing too great if they’re charging gems for things that should have come with the game, such as dyes that blend properly with armor textures, spectating, and custom arena modes.

User was infracted for being awesome.

Regular players have access to cheap and decent gear while there are still options in place for barons and price manipulations mostly in the form of things like dyes, rare armor sets, and material bags.

I don’t see the issue, but I guess I’m not an expert video game marketing…..person.

If I follow this link and there’s not this guy’s CV at the bottom of the article soliciting games companies for employment as ‘a REAL Games Economist’, I’m going to be disappointed.

“Goods are so badly flooded that it is much cheaper to just sell your equipment and buy new equipment instead of repairing it when it gets damaged.”

Um, what?

Goods are so badly flooded that it is much cheaper to just sell your equipment and buy new equipment instead of repairing it when it gets damaged.

Not letting that guy balance my checkbook lol.

Which part of this do you guys not understand? With a few exceptions (i.e. exotics, rares, and small pockets of blue/green gear that sell at much higher than vendor cost), you would be better off buying replacement gear than repairing it in the pre-endgame. This is compounded by the fact that it costs the same to repair both a damaged item and a broken item.

Compare:

Your level XX, fine/masterwork helm is damaged. You fix it, costing you 4 copper plus 2 copper per item level. Your net cost is anywhere from 6 copper to 164 copper.

Your level XX, fine/masterwork helm is damaged. You sell it to vendor for Y copper and buy the very same helm off the TP for Y+1 copper. Your net cost is 1 copper.

Some higher level masterwork armor pieces are actually more than 1 copper above vendor price, but the repair price is still on par or higher than the difference between TP sell order price and vendor price, let alone the difference between TP buy order price and vendor price.

When you have 80s and run dungeons regularly, it ends up being chump change to repair your non-80s’ equipment but the point still stands that buying a new piece of armor is usually cheaper than repairing it. Again, this is for PRE-endgame, as in the gear you use while leveling up, not your level 80 exotic gear.

Well, apparently in your rush to jump all over my rear and insult me, you didn’t bother to read my follow-up post 3 posts later:

actually the article is about pre-endgame economy, not the endgame economy

Ahhh, NOW that statement I quoted makes sense.

Could have saved yourself a lot of typing and time had you done so.

I think this is a great and incisive article. Plus many of the comments and discussion that follow it make key reading if you’re interested in MMO economy stuff, especially for a relative mmo newbie like me. The author responds in the comment section multiple times. Personally, I tldr’d the early responses by Tom Aram and started reading at Tae kittenim* onwards. Its fascinating stuff and I learned a lot, not only of the GW2 economy, but mmo economies in general.
