I was just reading some posts in the ranger section about the updates to come for that class – and someone said something about the game becoming paid to play in the future!!

Please tell me I read that wrong?

I dont mind the cash shop – even though it is rather “rich!” to ask people to buy in game items after allready buying the game! BUT Pay to play monthly subs would not be welcome here!!!

No, this game will never be Pay to Play.

But there will be paid expansions. Whether or not you can buy these with gems is still unknown.

I dont mind the cash shop – even though it is rather “rich!” to ask people to buy in game items after allready buying the game!

They do realise free updates though, like the Halloween update. They need to make money too. Asking money for optional stuff is the best way to do this.

IT’S A SWORD. THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.

Never heard of a game going from F2P to P2P. They would lose 95% of their player base. Being F2P is one of its major selling points.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

Draknar is right.

Not only is making a purely P2P game basically shooting yourself in the foot (cough SW:TOR), but making a F2P into a P2P is basically signing your own execution.

Some people are just too gullible or jump at every opportunity to create a drama thread. Logic and deduction would have come a long way in figuring out the answer.

But you expect them to keep developing content, provide support staff, power the servers, maintain the servers, host the servers around the world, etc, etc.?

:)

On topic, most of what you will read on any MMO forum should be taken with a pinch of salt. Rumours get started easily.

This is something that GW will never do. If I wanted a P2P game I would play WoW. What attracted me most to GW1 was that it was F2P, and I think that’s the case with many people. It just won’t ever happen.

Well I don’t know how you can argue with some random person on the ranger forums who says it’s going pay-to-play.

To clarify a point here, Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 will both work on the same model. Develop high quality content, and sell it to the players. You will and have gotten small updates, new additions to content, and continual fixes to the game.

You will also see “expansions” to the game, large amount of new content, new weapons that will lead to new skill, or just flat out new skill, maybe new races, and other things that are part of the new “expansion” content.

They did this in GW1, they had a similar, smaller cash shop also. They will continue this in GW2

I’m just agreeing with the consensus above, but yeah, Guild Wars 1 was never pay to play, it’s not ArenaNet’s style or their chosen business model, so don’t expect to see it change.

I dont mind the cash shop – even though it is rather “rich!” to ask people to buy in game items after allready buying the game!

While most MMORPGs on the market expect you to buy the game and then make it so that the game client is useless without further payments for a subscription, I think GW2 has it pretty good, really. At least you can play just fine without spending further cash, if you choose to. If ArenaNet can fund themselves on people purchasing vanity items and stuff, I’m very happy for that to happen.

Adding onto what Curuniel just said, how do the 9+ million WoW players think its ok to pay full price for each expansion, pay $15 a month for the privilege to play what they bought, and also have a cash shop for mounts server moves and other things? How often are they getting real content updates/additions anyhow?

I feel privileged to have bought a game from a developer that isn’t also charging me for access to what I bought.

Was about to mention this. It’s also worth noting that the usual excuse for monthly feels (read: server maintenance) is an outright lie. Anyone can read the fiscal reports of major MMO publishers and see the almost non-existant costs of running servers, at least in terms of large corporations. NCsoft with all the servers it runs for all the MMOs under their belt spend roughly $6,000 per quarter on actual server maintenance. Simple math brings that out to 400 players required to keep an MMO’s servers going with monthly fees alone for every MMO they run and maintain.

This game will never be able to go P2P because of lack of content and too much bugs.

Compare to WoW i think GW2 dont event match up with the content that what WoW can give lol…..

Dont get me wrong i dont play WoW at all not even once but i do watch WoW video on youtube all the time so i know they got alot of content….

You do realise that more players = more hardware required, more bandwidth required, etc? Not to mention more support staff required if they take their customer service seriously.

It’s not just a case of “401st & higher players = profit”.

I can’t talk about the bugs, I’ve only seen a couple. But comparing content on a 2-3 month old game to one that is pushing 7-8 years? I just don’t know where to begin…

Since when was a game that you had to buy, then buy expansions for f2p? LoL is f2p, Runes O fMagic is f2p, GW2 is not, it just uses the same pricing model that most games use, you buy it, then you play it, b2p.
