Game of the Year 2012 award goes to GW2!
Yes well done Arenanet
Well deserved indeed!
I cut my gaming teeth on Adventure&ZorkI,II,III.

That was more of “one-eyed among the blinds”. 2012 didn’t had any big AAA titles except for Guildwars 2.
Sure, quite a number of adventures and shooter sequels, yet none of them had the budget of Guildwars 2. Also many of the adventures / shooters where hardly suitable for public media, given their dark themes. One could say, that media didn’t have any choice but to choose the only game suitable for the mass. The only other title with chances on the crown was Masseffect 3, but i think all of us know how badly that one was screwed up.
All in all, 2012 was a rather weak year for gaming industry. If Anet would have dared to release Guildwars 2 in 2011, they would have been SMASHED by that years titels, among other the refresh of the shooter series Battlefield and CoD as well as Bethesdas masterpiece, Elders Scroll V: Skyrim.
Considering how broken and dull the game is I bet Anet paid them off for these rigged awards.
People like you are simply anoying…
Please, continue playing World of Daylies
From the perspective of a germanfag: Your beloved Obama got his laughable Nobel price for the same reason GW2 is getting it’s GOTY: People believe in something called “change”, giving “hope” for betterment, whatever…
On Topic:
GW2 is also GOTY according to a fan vote (and I mean a real vote, no online-crap) from one of Germany’s biggest (print) gaming magazines, “PC Games”.
It got FAR more votes than f.e. AC3, MP3. the fantastic(!) Dishonored, Borderlands, D3, WoW: MoP, your typical Shooter-crap, a.s.o.
(edited by Luceid.5631)
And what alternatives did we have? Mass Effect 3? That was the only other AAA title from a well known series released in 2012. And they screwed up, same as Diablo 3. Darksiders 2 on the third place, and from there on, we run into titles most of you probably never even heard of. Not that those games were bad, but they didn’t have nearly the budget for marketing. AC3 was just yet another title in a well know series, nothing new. And don’t even think about WoW, after the nth expansion, nobody cares about it anymore.
Guildwars 2 only made it to the top because they lacked competition in 2012. If the game would have been released in 2011, they would have been SMASHED by BF3, CoD and Skyrim.
(edited by Exterminans.9723)
The game itself deserves all the awards of the world,
But the rest is handled by jerks (Gem Store, end-game, etc…). I feel that someone is really limiting developpers since release…
That was more of “one-eyed among the blinds”. 2012 didn’t had any big AAA titles except for Guildwars 2.
False statement is blatantly false.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_in_video_gaming#Game_releases
Take your pick. There were dozens of AAA titles released this year. Just because you personally weren’t interested in very many games doesn’t mean that nothing came out this year. >_>
Hell, I can name a few AAA titles released this year that are at least worthy of discussion in a top games list with very little effort. Here I go:
Dishonored
Spec Ops: The Line
Far Cry 3
X-COM: Enemy Unknown
There, I just rounded out the top five with several very good AAA games. And the fact that you name CoD as one of the games that would have “smashed” GW2 while casually ignoring the fact that Black Ops 2 was released in 2012 only compounds your failure here. Your argument is invalid.
And it’s not like everyone is picking just AAA titles for their top list of games, either. Yahtzee and Jim Sterling both selected indie titles among their top 5. And there are plenty of indie titles which honestly deserve a bit of recognition for how good they are at what they do. The Walking Dead and Journey come to mind, and some folks have taken a fancy to The Lone Survivor as well.
So yeah….you’re wrong. Wrong enough that I’m tempted to link that video clip of Dr Cox singing the “Wrong” song.
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.
(edited by critickitten.1498)
GW2 brought very little to the MMO genre with it’s release that we hadn’t already seen in other games. It didn’t even polish the current state of gaming to a shiny new level. Giving ArenaNet this award is rewarding mediocrity.
I haven’t played for a few months now due to lack of interest, but off the top of my head:
Voice acted story – SWTOR did this much better in every way. TSW had better acting and camera moves and far better characters. Need I mention Traherne? I didn’t want to do my class quest because of that one character.
Combat System – similar but not as good as the Skill Wheel from TSW. If you were a thief using S+P then you could one button your way though almost the entire game.
Jump Puzzles – already seen in TSW though GW2 has the edge here
Underwater combat – tedious and bug ridden. Mobs that often broke off and healed to full. Underwater areas however were often quite nice.
Graphics – about what I would expect from a 2007 title. Tera and TSW beat it hands down.
Asthetic – pretty good, but nothing special. It’s typical swords and sorcery with pirate overtones. Tera left it for dead, and TSW was ahead of it for those who like a modern setting.
Classes – pretty standard fare. TSW beats it hands down here. Tera is about on par.
Effects -ok when you’re alone but almost intolerable with a group.
Quests – Nothing too special. The class quests are pretty forgettable made all the worse by the terrible VA. The dynamic events were pretty decent fun but are just ‘public quests’ from Warhammer. The investigation quests of TSW blow these out the water.
Setting – I am so sick to death of D&D/Tolkien/Sword+Sorcery – time for something new. TSW gave us a modern setting which was a refreshing change from the same old same old of GW2.
Ability to quest with friends – ok, but if you have done the quests already you are basically just there to mash mobs for your friends. It doesn’t penalise you but it doesn’t incentise either. TSW did much the same prior to GW2 releasing with about the same result – slightly better in TSW’s favour though.
Endgame – appalling, but so is endgame for almost all MMOs.
PVP – since this was meant to be the selling point for the game it should score well but it doesn’t. We got a few domination maps which soon become dull and one major zone (discontinuous) for world PVP. PVP in there mainly consisted of jousting a door for 5 minutes, killing a mob, then running off to repeat elsewhere. It was tedious and lacked any skill whatsoever. Seeing five ‘commanders’ running from door to door Benny Hill style all without saying a single word was...×. I had no rated matches and WvWvW scores a 0 with me so I would say it was a big fail, except the other major releases were probably even worse.
Orr – the place MMO players are sent if they’ve been very very bad in their life
Zones – most were typical fare, nothing really stood out. While I didn’t hate any I didn’t feel a particular fondness for any either – it was all crap I’ve seen a million times and at a fairly low res too. Tera zones are much more detailed. TSW zones are just more interesting.
I honestly can’t think of anything that GW2 did that was so outstandingly better than anyone else to receive this award. I can think of a lot of things it did that were mediocre or worse.

You can break any game down like this, and it doesn’t really make any point.
You can’t cherry pick features from other games and say GW2 didn’t do anything spectacular. Your warhammer reference specifically shows you have no idea how game mechanics evolve over time.
Those cherry picked features are also completely marred by the other parts of the respective game.
TOR? Buggy unoptimized mess with boring endgame encounters, boring crafting, 1 to1 WoW-clone mechanics.
TERA? Korean grind with okay combat and half naked prepubescent girls for a race.
TSW? Cool concept, mediocre execution.
Warhammer? Completely broken classes, poor pet AI, half of the content promised at launch non-existent.
Basically, your bias is showing.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”
So tell me, what is it that GW2 did so much better than the competition that meant it should receive an award? I honestly can’t think of any features it brought out that were significantly better and it doesn’t win on overall IMHO – though I couldn’t actually say who should.

Honestly, angry joes’ a really decent reviewer.
Wish more people watched his show frequently. Joe deserves some thumbs.
Pretty valid points coming from him with his pick on Guild Wars 2 aswell.

It’s not actually a negative post, it’s a neutral one.
Still, while you’re posting, how about you put in your answer to the question I posed. Just your opinion of what it is that GW2 did that was significantly better than the other offerings this year.
Well deserved indeed!
Totally well deserved award. GW2 is still the best MMORPG out there, can’t deny that!

The year 2012 has alot of games. Combine them together with the huge chunk of games that came out. (2012)
Look at it’s features, look at the additions it gave.
Look how it plays, look at how the community is.
Look at the music aspect, look at the voice over.
Look at the atmosphere it combines.
Etc
Now look at the – points.
Bugs plague games all over whether it’s single player / Multi player or an MMO.
But it wasn’t a huge issue with the server swaps being instantly for me.
But that’s just how you review it, some of the websites put guild wars 2 on second or third place.
But that doesn’t change the fact that the people that reviewed it liked the game alot better then the other reviewers.
They just have a better favorite pick towards a game like Borderlands 2 or Farcry 3.
But to be fair IGN and PCgamer werent the only ones picking it as a GOTY
Aside of that, people that compile it have to be able to play the game, some of them don’t play it at all. And you probably jsut have one person backing up the game. Which eventually wont make the pick when they get nominated.
Especially when i saw Gamespy picking Xcom on their top1 spot. The game had soooo many bugs in the Multiplayer gameplay that never got resolved that much.
But, that’s just it Bugs aren’t put into a review because it’s not part of the gameplay itself.
I’d never play Xcom because its plagued with bugs on it’s multiplayer part.
It;’s just a big team, that played a bunch of games.
Picked what overly had the best feel to it what sticked for a long time.
Then they all pick there top10 games.
They put them together
Oh to OP;
Might need to edit your post and put Gamespot up there aswell.
=d
Just for me it;s like;
If angry joe tells you guild wars 2 is kitten Game of the year. It;s jsut like that! =d
Although everyones’ inclined to their own opinions same goes for other reviewers and sites.

Well deserved award. Definitely my 2012 game of the year.

How about new mechanics, and groundbreaking new look and feels about ancient aspects of MMO’s?
It sucks cause its not like bla bla bla…its called originality, hate it or love it, it doesn’t matter, they tried something new.
Of course the game has its flaws, and please stop comparing it to World of Borecraft and Skyrimming.
So tell me, what is it that GW2 did so much better than the competition that meant it should receive an award? I honestly can’t think of any features it brought out that were significantly better and it doesn’t win on overall IMHO – though I couldn’t actually say who should.
- I can take 5 of any class and complete any content.
- It doesn’t take 3 months to hit level cap.
- It doesn’t take 2 months after cap to hit the gear ceiling
- It emphasizes cooperation over competition in PvE
- Ad hoc grouping
- Overflow Servers
- Event chains that affect game play if left to propagate
- Interesting combat mechanics (Complexity != Depth)
- 3 fully supported game modes
- No subscription fee.

I think they should update their Award page a little bit…
Massive achievement coming from Arenanet on this, Just googled the amount of Game of the years GW2 recieved xD

It provided a significant number of people (including critics) with a lot of gaming enjoyment by providing an overall gaming experience that they felt was better than the overall gaming experience that they got playing other games.
It’s not about the components, it’s about the game as a whole. “Best of the year” is certainly subjective and opinion based, not about provable “fact” or “innovation.”

I think it’s important to understand the argument being presented when any title wins GOTY that isn’t an award given by peers in the industry. IGN and all these reviewers are basically like Variety magazine, the NYT, and other film critics… and while they may have good reviews, their awards (if they even give one out) don’t hand a candle to the Oscars. And in the Oscars…. only actors can only vote for best actor, only directors for best director, etc. (with the exceptions being foreign films and documentaries which are determined by a special panel and everyone getting to vote for best picture).
A more interesting piece by IGN or any of these critics would be taking what they consider the top games and giving us an really in depth piece of why they think a title is GOTY. Personally, I think GW2 on paper is a solid GOTY choice, in execution it’s not all that great, but good enough… Given it’s scope, it gets some breaks for not being a flawlessly delivered product. In many ways, that’s why Skryim took away so many awards last year, even the more “coveted” peer-based awards. I definitely thought Skyward Sword was a much better game, but it’s scope paled in comparison to Skyrim… and that is why, it failed to take home many GOTYs.
Congratulations ArenaNet! A well-deserved award
Um…
Ign gave Game of the Year to Journey.
The category was MMO of the year, very different categories. OP your post is a little misleading.

@Obly
“How about new mechanics, and groundbreaking new look and feels about ancient aspects of MMO’s?”
Sorry but this is a completely false statement and nothing is groundbreaking about GW2. There is no question the graphics look nice but isn’t anything groundbreaking. The rest of that quote is just nonsense.
So tell me, what is it that GW2 did so much better than the competition that meant it should receive an award? I honestly can’t think of any features it brought out that were significantly better and it doesn’t win on overall IMHO – though I couldn’t actually say who should.

Sorry but this is false as well. This is not done better here and actually already been done before.
1) I can take 5 of any other class in any other mmo and see all the content as well.
2) Ummm haven’t seen a mmo game yet that takes 3 months to max level.
3) See #2 but replace the 3 months to 2.
4) True and false for this but for the worse. GW2 at times you NEED cooperative play to grind events which after a month of release if you start playing now, it is going to be difficult to complete many events while leveling. Also pve is a competition being this game turned into what it said it wouldn’t do.
6) Overflow servers? Sorry but ToR does it better and at least you don’t keep getting this annoying window saying join overflow or saying are you ready all the time. ToR’s overflow system is better and allows people to still phase over to your overflow.
7) The event chains are extremely repetitive and boring. Many other games do it better and even WoW’s phasing after doing quest chains and how the world changes blows GW2’s even chains out of the water.
8) The combat mechanics are anything but interesting. So few skills and needing certain weapons to do different things is horrible imo.
9) 3 supported game modes?
10) No sub fee is a good thing but sorry they aren’t the first to do it either. In fact the f2p games give you the game for free also. You still need to buy GW2.
There was no competition in 2012 at all. Someone even showed a list of some of the games and that was a laughable list. All the hype and anticipation for this game is why it won since there was nothing really else. Diablo 3 was a huge let down and had they done it right and how D2 and D1 was, D3 would have easily won it.
Congrats. I’ve been a gamer for ~25 years and GW2 is imo the model for state of the art online game. It’s a good time to game and ANet deserves credit.
So tell me, what is it that GW2 did so much better than the competition that meant it should receive an award? I honestly can’t think of any features it brought out that were significantly better and it doesn’t win on overall IMHO – though I couldn’t actually say who should.

Same is true for TSW.
- It doesn’t take 3 months to hit level cap.
No MMO takes that long. Average is usually a week played.
- It doesn’t take 2 months after cap to hit the gear ceiling
Again, neither does any other MMO unless you are very casual.
- It emphasizes cooperation over competition in PvE
This is a minor tweak of the usual rules but is very appreciated,
- Ad hoc grouping
Rift did this and I presume Warhammer. It’s basically neccesitated by the public quests…I mean DE.
- Overflow Servers
Pretty much standard fare these days. SWTOR/TSW and I think Tera all have this.
- Event chains that affect game play if left to propagate
Chain events for DE are not much more interesting than chain quests and pretty much are analogs. Nothing truly affects gameplay for longer than it takes to kill a few mobs and get the fort back.
- Interesting combat mechanics (Complexity != Depth)
Thief S+P gameplay = 3 3 3 mob(s) dead, repeat
Builds revolved around choosing a few utility skills and a heal to go with the 5 skills you get from equipping a weapon. It felt like a cut down version of the Skill Wheel from TSW.
- 3 fully supported game modes
You’ve lost me. What are these modes?
- No subscription fee.
Nice, but not really revolutionary. Many games use a F2P/B2P/hybrid model these days.
I just don’t see enough things that GW2 has that are outstanding considering the other releases in the same category during the year. It was enjoyable but by no means a GOTY to me.
Congrats. I’ve been a gamer for ~25 years and GW2 is imo the model for state of the art online game. It’s a good time to game and ANet deserves credit.
I’ve been a pc/console gamer for more than 25 years and GW2 is imo not the model at all for the state of the art online gaming. There is a reason WoW hit 13 mil and GW2 hasn’t even hit 2-3+ mil in box sales and I seriously doubt there are even over a mil active players.
Actually, the game of the year award went to the walking dead (spike tv) the only one that actually matters because it’s voted on.
As for IGN, they gave game of the year to Journey, not Guild Wars 2.
PC Gamer gave guild wars 2 MMO of the year, not game of the year.
Angry Joe is the only one that game best game of the year to guild wars 2.
So your post is quite inaccurate.

It hit 1 million pre-purchases in April, then sold 2 mil at release. it has since had strong sales through December according to NCsoft sales data.

I’m glad to see someone else recognized this as well!
I posted the information on IGN giving Journey GotY (which imo was well deserved and then some).
I’m all for giving GW2 the awards that are due, but this OP feels misleading to me. :/
ive never played a mmo as much as gw2.
its fluid, pretty, gameplay is fun, its huge, i like the playforming part.
perfect, no. not at all, far from it.
it wouldnt be goty, but since i cant stop playing and cannoy get myself to play xcom or finish my far cry 3 campaign.
well, its goty.
Guild Wars 2 does deserve GotY.
There is a huge difference between gaming sites and the forum community, though:
- Gaming sites judge games based on whether they are fun or not. GW2 is one of the most fun games released last year, so it makes sense that it would be GotY.
- The forum community has a vocal minority made of grinders, farmers, addicts and exploiters – exactly the kind of people other MMOs catter to, and who GW2 is trying to avoid.
Little to no surprise to read the negativity here from the same people over and over.
Congrats to ArenaNet for making such a great game. Remember to keep it great by listening to your real target audience, instead of trying to catter to the grinders and farmers and addicts and exploiters.

SWToR hit over that in pre-sales also. Your point?
GW2 does not cover all those features in one package and that is your opinion only. So please don’t try and tell me and others what we fail to realize when you fail to realize how blah and ordinary and nothing new and groundbreaking GW2 is.

It’s not that we want to convince you. It’s that there are a set of people (which may or may not include you, but I don’t recall seeing your name that often) who feel the need to rain on everybody’s parade with the same set of complaints/conspiracies no matter what the thread is about. You’ve had your say, you’ve voiced your opinion. You’ve made your complaints. I know you won’t, but I ask… Please, give it a rest.

GotY, Gw2 got it by default, there’s no competition.
There’s nothing new here, it’s all been done before by the Koreans.
It could very well be a very different outcome next year.

Features the game has are my opinion now? lol.
My opinion is that GW2 is a great, if flawed, game. GOTY? Sure, for what I’ve gotten out of it. Everything I listed as features are facts.

haha, i must reluctantly agree with that
yeah, if you take the game as is for a 300 to 500h its simply glorious.
for a lot of players, this game will take months to finish.
its goty right there.

Congrats Anet. I know forums of any game tend to attract all the negative nancys so I hope you guys don’t get put down a lot. I read through this forum all the time and it just makes me sad. You guys should try to be nicer. Anet can’t predict the future. a massive release such as this and I can see they are trying their best, they aren’t god you know!
Can someone back it up that gw 2 actually got goty? i thought it was given to “Journey” and not gw2, which got mmo of the year, but not goty.
GotY, Gw2 got it by default, there’s no competition.
There’s nothing new here, it’s all been done before by the Koreans.
It could very well be a very different outcome next year.
i agree here, we are a bit late in the west for that type of game.
and gw2 DEFINITELY HAVE A HUGE NCSOFTESQUE INFLUENCE.
my first game of the genre, i like it! but yeah, i hope the future of mmos is even better/smarter!

This^ A thousand times!
Dunno what it is with western gamers or western game developers but they always seem to be way behind what the koreans are doing. Archeage will be a game which REALLY sets standard and revolutionizes the MMO genre, GW2 tried and to some extent has but it sitll has a long long long way before it becomes anywhere near the best mmo out.

Definitely Angry Joe’s GOTY
PC Gamer MMO of the Year
Don’t know about IGN, but I know the winner was Journey, and I don’t know why the OP listed it. Were there sub-categories where GW2 won perhaps?
Cheers.

The fact is GW2 has nothing to do with the game Anet promised. GW2 is good game for few weeks. But after lvl 80 it’s over. And don’t tell me to be nice. Anet made game for 14 old teens, which never ever played MMO. They don’t respect me as a player, they lied to me in their manifesto, so why I shall respect them? When they made from this one a really new game, not some stupid WoW clone, I will respect them and will be nice.

Why are you even here? Just leave.
Congrats Anet!

oh wait a minute!
Skyrim.
This is off topic……..but I hate how much praise Skyrim gets. It is horridly overrated, I got tired when I realized every dungeon looked the bloody same………which was less then 2 hours.
Skyrim would be nothing without the modding scene, the only reason to play it.
I’ll submit this article for everyone to take a look at… but the short of it is that this year was rather lackluster for gaming if you solely base it on the review scores. According to metacritic, which awards a GOTY based on highest aggregate review score…
“The Walking Dead had the highest aggregate review score for the year with a 95, making it the lowest scoring ‘Game of the Year’ since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2003.”
http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a448411/2012-a-lacklustre-year-for-games-says-metacritic.html
Obviously we can scrutinize the source… but same can be said for anybody that gives out a GOTY award.
