Let me begin by stating I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum section for this post and if a mod sees it I appreciate this being moved to the correct place.

My birthday is approaching and I was considering getting a gaming mouse specifically for guild wars 2. I saw several options while scanning the web for choices

Razer naga 2014 looks optimal but I am disconcerted by reviews I have seen stating that the buttons fail after less then a year
Another choice is the Logitech g6000 it is similar to the naga but some say it lasts longer and It has a g shift .I don’t know if you even need that many hot keys for gw2 though.
I was also considering the orbweaver as the thumbs as and moving body pieces seem to add comfort

The longevity of these mice is important to me because it will be a birthday present and I can not afford a replacement at this time.
From someone who hsa experience with either of these mice it would be great if they could be ranked by ease of use, comfort, gameplay utility, longevity , and personal preference
Also if you are endorsing a mouse you use then how you map your skills would be really helpful
Thanks guys

I’d suggest the Special one hand gaming-keyboard and the logitech g6000 or the Naga

I have a Naga for a year now, it still works fine but I use G400s right now and it’s alot more comfortable(I guess this will depend on your grip and hand size).

I only mapped 1 side button for dodge for the G400s, same for the Naga, it’s alot more convenient to bind things on my keyboard. I play all classes, mostly ele and ranger nowdays and I don’t find the need more more than 1 extra button for my dodge TBH.

Had a mouse with a more complex button layout before that (Roccat Kone XTD) but it didn’t really benefit me. It is surprising how many incompatibilities you discover in regards to which mouse button you can map with what, to not bug out the camera movement among other things. In the end I settled on the mouse with the best ergonomics for my hand and the best “feel”. Really, there’s nothing more important than trying the mouse before you buy it.
Some super awesome gaming mouse might have a scrollwheel that you deem too hard to click, or left and right buttons that are too easy to trigger on accident and stuff like that.
So, in my opinion, focus on ergonomics and feel and make “mmo specific buttons” a second or third priority. Don’t forget that you will have to relearn your skill layout and depending on the complexity of your setup this can take a considerable amount of time.

I use a G700 for GW1 and 2. All 13 G700 buttons are put to good use. I also use a Logitech wireless game pad in my left hand for even more buttons. My disability prevents me from being able to use regular keyboard. For typing I use a drop down virtual keyboard for the simple stuff and a small mini bluetooth keyboard for regular chat. This setup gets me by since I’m not a hard core gamer. I don’t have much room for a corded mouse, so the G600 is out the question. I’ve tried corded mice and the drag caused by the cord is awful.

I was using a Naga for about a year, then the button function of the scroll wheel died. While it wasn’t crucial to GW2, there are other programs it was useful in (e.g. Blender)
I replaced it with a Logitech G500s.

Another problem I had with the Razer product line is their “Synapse” cloud crap. Every time you start your computer or start up the Synapse software, it has to load up, call home and check for updates to itself. then check for updates to your settings, etc. It’s more of a hindrance than a benefit, and your mouse won’t work beyond generic use if you don’t have the software active.

The G500s has software that runs also, but it starts quickly, and doesn’t interfere beyond that. All settings are stored on your computer or, optionally, on the mouse itself.

I’m using a razer hex naga myself. It can get confusing at first, but it sure as hell beats reaching out for the keys 6-0 on the keyboard (as movement can get interrupted when reaching for those keys, or even press the wrong keys in panic). I’m planning to try out and buy a razer naga myself. With the razer naga you could probably configure macros for skill combos to the rest of the input, but like I said it will take getting used to. Don’t buy it to feel like a pro though, buy it for it’s functionality. Don’t listen to others berating about multibutton mouses. For example, dodge is now binded to the space key in my keyboard config, since it’s more important, and the jump button on one of the side keys.

I have the Logitech G600 as well and I love it. I also have the old model some people speak of and the ONLY problem I have ever had with it is that the blue LED died. Minor issue, does not affect functionality.

I actually use the G Shift button for the “autoattack” skill.

@ Steel Fenrir, you cannot map “combos” to the buttons as ANET does not approve of “macros”. They support key bindings only, meaning one button does one function such as one of the side buttons mapped to the elite skill or heal skill, but NOT one button mapped to launch skills 5-4-3-2-1 in succession etc.

Your best bet is probably to go to BestBuy or a similar electronics store and just put your hands on different models. You can go nuts with reading reviews, “min/maxing” how you perceive the different features, worrying about the macros, etc., but finding a model that fits your hand in terms of size, contours, material feel/tackiness and button placement is more imporant IMO. 40 buttons on a mouse may seem great, but are no good if you have a very big or small hand and have to contort yourself to reach them.

I ended up with a Roccat Kone if it matters.

Yea the ability to have 100% mobility and use a skill is nearly impossible in this game. A gaming mouse is the answer. Try moving forward, dodging, turning 90 right then using the 8 skill and tell me this game is mobile. People with a gaming mouse have a huge advantage and even more so anyone who can figure out how to get the joystick to work properly. Other mmo’s don’t have this same problem.

If you’re already considering a gaming mouse, why would you still have a skill bound to 8? Rebinding your keyboard goes a long way in increasing your effectiveness. (12345tgvqe with wasd all day)

Z,X,C,V

but if it was me, I would bind Auto Attack to LMB and make target system bit semi-aim like in Neverwinter Online.

GW2 isn’t a game like TERA or Aion where you have a palette of 50 skills which you need to have an easy access to since they’re vital.

I’m not saying that Naga is bad or w/e. Those gaming sets can give you a every nice gaming experience by binding your skills properly and going with the flow, but sometimes it’s not necessary.

Naga

I played with a Naga for a long time until it died and they are good for MMOs. However, you really don’t need that many buttons for GW2. Their durability is also a bit on the weaker side as they are prone to getting an issue where a the click doesn’t register properly. You can open up the mouse and clean the parts (vids on YouTube show how to do this), but this often just extends the life a bit more.

Also, it just takes a lot of practice to get used to the extra buttons.

Logitech G600

I bought this mouse online and returned it shortly after. As far as features go, this one is packed and that is a definite advantage. However, it’s an extremely uncomfortable and awkward mouse to use for 2 reasons:
1) The buttons on the side are placed almost completely horizontally. The problem with this is that when you place your hand on the mouse, your thumb comes down at an angle, meaning that many of the buttons are just in a bad place to reach. This occurs with the Naga to some degree as well, but it just seemed worse with this mouse.
2) The third mouse click button is very awkward and easily clicked on accident frequently. I’m sure you can get used to this after a while, but the learning curve for a Naga-like mouse is pretty high as it is and this feature just makes it even more difficult to get used to.

MadKatz R.A.T. 7

This is what I currently use. This mouse is more expensive and it has less buttons, but the customization makes this mouse a million times more comfortable and easy to use. The biggest drawback I’ve experienced in use of it is that the custom button settings that you can adjust reset when you restart your computer, meaning that you’ll have to open your saved button profile and load it each time. Since I restart my computer so rarely, it hasn’t really been an issue for me.

Winner: MadKatz R.A.T. 7

The reason I put this mouse as the winner is because you don’t need the million extra buttons that the Naga and Logitech mice have for GW2. If you play something like WoW, it can come in handy, but the additional customization and comfort of the MadKatz easily outpaces the other mice if you don’t totally need those extra buttons.

I use a logitech g700. Got it around the time of the beta weekends. Works lovely for me.

My husband uses a g600, but it’s relatively new. Personally all those buttons and no thumb rest doesn’t work for me, but he does ok.

I’ve always been a logitech fan personally, and have had good luck with their products for the most part. I do tend to go through keyboards a bit faster than I do mice though… I’ve been told I need to be ‘gentler’ on my keys. Anywho, their newer gaming mice do seem to be of decent quality.

No prob. I was curious before as it was one of the first things I checked when I got the game lol.

@Dahkeus : I guess that’s further proof that players just kind of have to try the mice out for themselves. Personally I find the G600 one of the most comfortable mice I have ever used and I love the placement of the thumb buttons. Everybody’s different though.

@ OP BestBuy usually won’t give you problems as far as I know if you don’t like something and I’m pretty sure they have most of the gaming stuff out on display now so you could try and see what fits your hand well.

BB is usually pretty good. If they don’t have something on display, they will usually pull one out of box if you need to check (for example) size, and they have a no questions asked return policy. Used to be 30 days, but I think they have cut it down to 2 weeks. Just remember what CC you purchase it on if you misplace the receipt (they can look it up).

Agreed. If that mouse works for you, then that’s awesome!

The best advice I can ultimately give is to either buy mouse you’ve had the chance to actually try or at least make sure that the place you buy from has a good return policy, lol.
