I don’t know if anyone else remembers this but when infinite gathering tools were first released, and when they first returned to the gem store last August a lot of the debate on whether they’re worth buying centred around what would happen when new zones, and therefore new nodes at new tiers, were introduced.
Interestingly there was very little debate about whether new nodes would be added or whether they would be T6 or a new tier, that seemed to go without saying. The only question was whether the infinite gathering tools would be upgraded to be compatible or if players who had them would have to buy new tools as well (either finite ones in-game or new infinite ones).
Well now we’ve got a new zone with new gathering nodes (Cacti, giving Nopale and Prickly Pears) and they’re T6. Meaning not only do the infinite tools already work on them buy Ori tools as well.
I know reactions to this will be mixed but personally I’m really happy about it. It’s a small thing on it’s own but it’s also a good sign of how Anet are approaching adding new content IMO and fits with the horizontal progression idea.

I remember the debate about whether new zones would invalidate the gemstore tools. Hopefully the debate is now answered.
I bought my first gathering tool with the recent pick, and I’ve been very pleased with it. I thought it would be much more annoying to switch between alts and have found out it’s not that much trouble to bank at the end of the day then pick up with whatever char I chose the next day. Pleased enough that I’m planning to buy an axe and sickle when they next come out.
Things I don’t miss. Running out in the middle of a session, requiring a trip to the nearest place to get one. Having multiple types in inventory. Forgetting that I have a lower level tool equipped and harvesting a node, getting a ruined harvest.
Yes they’re expensive, but imo it’s well worth the cost in convenience.
