I wish to apologize up front if this post sounds confrontational or whiny, that is not my intention, but I have found some issues I’d like to bring up that have affected me and many people I’ve met.

Gem conversion in game is still a monumental pain, the original system was in many ways much cleaner and better to use. Currently the only way to get an actual realistic conversion rate for gems to gold is to use a website outside of those run by Arena Net to look at gem to gold prices such as gw2tp.com. Its highly ridiculous that we have to do such a thing, I know many people that have quit buying gems in large amounts cause they have no idea what the rate of conversion is and they don’t wish to lose money on it so instead buy nothing at all. Along with new players I have met that have a similar issue that when I try to explain to them how the system works finally throw up their hands in frustration and just don’t even try. I’m not saying I’ve met everyone in the game and this is a universal consensus but everyone I have met seems to hate this new system old and new players alike and if their attitudes are anything to go by this is costing Arena Net money, a lot of it.

The second issue is purchasing gems overall, I don’t know what system is being used now that is causing this issue but myself and many others (especially if map chat today is anything to go by) are having issues with buying gems at all. It keeps giving a “Unfortunately an error has occurred. Please try again later.” message. Now I don’t know if its because of the anti fraud locks, the no VPN usage allowed when purchasing, or some other issue entirely, but a large amount of people seem to be quite angry at their inability to buy gems and the fact that they have to put in a support ticket to get any sort of help, especially during these 24 hour flash sales.

Now as I said I’m not trying to whine, I love Guild Wars 2, and Anet as a company and want to see them succeed as much as possible, but it just feels like these issues are causing Anet to lose large amounts of possible revenue because they are driving away paying customers with their complex and frustrating systems. I’m hoping maybe these systems are already being addressed or will be in HoT because if it continues I feel you will put more of a wedge between yourselves and customers that genuinely want to give you money.

I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

I bought gems twice in the last two weeks and had no issues. Not sure why some people are running into problems.

Yup. The problem is none of the default gem conversion quantities lend themselves to a simple translation into conversion rate. You can instantly buy 400, 800, 1200, or 2000 gems. If you want to find out how much gold you need to pay to buy 100 gems, you have to go into custom exchange, and manually enter 100 (or 1000). Or you have to take the 2000 gem cost, and divide it by 20 in your head.

The reverse problem doesn’t exist. One of the default conversion amounts for gems to gold is 100 gold. So you can tell at a glance what the gems to gold exchange rate is.

Also, IMHO, having options to instantly buy 400, 800, and 1200 gems is stupid since they’re all multiples of 400. You could just buy 400 two times if you want 800, three times if you want 1200. (You could click it five times for 2000, but that’s a lot of clicking).

The options should be something more like 100, 300, 500, 2000. Or 100, 250, 700, 2000. Numbers that make it easier to get to any round number of gems between 100 and 2000. Not just multiples of 400. If they insist on having a 400 in there since many of the gem shop items cost a multiple of 400, then 100, 400, [500 or 700], 2000 would work.

Whichever they pick, make sure there’s a 100 in there. Or bring back the graph which showed you the current and past week’s exchange rate.
