Gems are expensive (EU)
Then don’t buy gems. It’s a market thing, lower demand => lower prices.
I assume you meant to type 2800, 4000, and 8000. The US prices are exactly the same. A purchase of 8000 gems goes for $100 USD, 800 gems is $10 USD. Also there is no way that these are “such few gems”. Even the most expensive items in the gem store do not cost more than 800-1200 gems and they are permanent and account-bound.
In some other MMOs (e.g PW) you have to spend $1,000 per character.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

No. Time is money.

Yes i wrote the wrong numbers. Still a lot. If you look at League of Legends or Dota 2 it’s pretty cheap. In LoL you can spend not much at all and get a few champions and skins.
They are quite expensive indeed i wish there was kitten dollar offer for 400 for example, also usually in other games there is a GOOD discount when you pay more to buy something, in Gw2 theres not 10$=800,20$=1600, 35$=2800 etc. no matter what you pay you`ll get 80 gems for each dollar
There’s no need for a discount based on the amount of money you pay.
It incites people who not necessarily have the means to pay the upper side of their limit.
I prefer what they did with the green quaggan backpack and the Mr Sparkles mini. You don’t get extra gems: you get extra show-off.
Well, in terms of currency exchange….100 euros is 137 dollars. So it is more expensive in Europe….

Sean, in EU, you see the prices tax included. In the US, you see the prices tax excluded. So the taxes have to be added on top of what you see.
Apparently (I never tested it myself), with taxes, you pay roughly the same conversion-wise. At least, that’s what I was told when I asked like 5-6 months ago.

No. Time is money.
Wrong. Time is most certainly NOT money. Time is far more important than money.
The time I spend working to earn real life money is too precious to waste that money on gems. I’d much rather spend fake money gained while having fun on gems.
On a side note, if anet had made a GW1 sequel instead of a reject-wow-player entertainer, then I may have spent real money after the initial purchase to show support to the company.

To begin with, 100 dollars =/= 100 euros. 100 euros = approx. 137 dollars
Well, I’ve lived in the US for 2 years ( doing my vac schemes with law firms ) to know that life is so much cheaper as opposed to London, UK.
Lucky kittens…

Time is only money if you’d be using that time to do an activity to aquire money.
Otherwise it’s just time.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Just for fairness sake, USD and EUR are not equally worth. As a Swede 10 euro is 95,53 SKR and 10 Dollar is 70,14 SKR at today’s exchange rate. I assume the exchange rates differ for other non euro/dollar countries too?
Some must fight, so that all may be free.

1 euro does not equal 1 USD or 1 pound, however they translate it directly, as if it actually was like that. You can get away with so much cheaper gems in USA than in UK.

Yea! I get to trot this out again.
That’s basically the ratio that everyone uses. Just check out the prices for the next gen consoles.
XBox One – $499.99, £429.99, €499.99 – 1 to 0.86 to 1
PS4 – $399, £349, €399 – 1 to 0.875 to 1
GW2 – $50, £42.50, €50 – 1 to 0.85 to 1
It’s to cover VAT (20%), exchange rate fees and currency fluctuation. If anything GW2 favors the UK more than Microsoft or Sony.
RIP City of Heroes

Living in UK 800 gems is still 10 pounds, which kind of goes against this ratio.
According to the Wiki it’s 8.50 pounds. I don’t think they’ve changed the prices at all since the game went live. Anyways I can’t see the UK prices here in the states in the TP.
Edit: No actually I can bring up the UK price and it lists on my system as 8.50 pounds. You sir are mistaken.

I live in Sweden so it’s kittening expensive. In Norway it would be more expensive though.
As far as exchange rates go, I’m in Canada and the prices listed for gems are in USD, so I also pay more than the listed price, though I do not pay any tax. Thankfully our dollar is close to par with USD so it’s not a huge difference like the European currency exchanges.

Where abouts in the US are you living? When I lived in a small ‘city’ (that would barely qualify as a town in the UK) in costal Georgia it was definitely cheaper than living just outside London (and a lot cheaper than actually living in London). But I got a nasty shock when I went to New York or Washington D.C. and everything was more expensive.
Although I was also making a pretty decent wage for the city I lived in, and it converted over to less than minimum wage in the UK. (Luckily I was there for the work experience, not the money.)
Regarding gems you also have to bear in mind that the US prices are shown before tax whereas the UK/Euro ones include the tax in the display price. If you actually click through to buy them the final price you pay is higher, and unless the exchange rate has jumped that day it works out to almost the same as the cost in pounds or euros.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Well still. I have to pay 30 euro and US pay 30 dollars. There’s the big difference. The big difference isn’t actually the tax price.
Euro =
8.98034196 Swedish kronor
1 U.S. dollar =
6.56361787 Swedish kronor
That’s about 2.5 kr more for each euro than for paying in us dollar.
So if i pay 30 euro for example that would be 2.5 × 30 = 75 kr more than if i payed in us dollar.
+ the tax.

Correct me if I’m wrong but online purchases aren’t taxed depending on where you live in the US
Correct me if I’m wrong but online purchases aren’t taxed depending on where you live in the US
If you live in the US you pay in us dollar. If you live within EU you pay in euro. Depending on your currency, what country you live in, the exchange from your currency to the other, in this case euro will be different depending on where you live and what currency you use. In US you only use one currency, i believe? so you have it all good. Though you suffer from not having free health care etc.
OnT: I think US has their own taxes and EU has our own taxes. I doubt a specific country’s taxes applies. In Sweden we have 25% on wares. EU has one of their own i guess, that applies to all countries within EU. Same with US. When it’s a global purchase.

Think you missed my point totally here. In some states of the United States of America you do not have to pay a tax on internet purchases be it from amazon or in a game. Also your healthcare isn’t free you pay for it with your taxes which is why they’re kittening sky high compared to Americas.
In Florida I do not have to pay a sales tax on an internet purchase to a company that has no physical representation in the state (which I believe is the case for ANet as their HQ is in Seattle or something). I’m not 100% sure if Washington also allows them to do this.
Then again I’ve also never purchased gems other than a gem card which I didn’t have to pay a sales tax on.

Well that is known. Some states in the US don’t have taxes at all, so of course they don’t apply.
Yes we pay taxes. In Sweden the taxes are 30%. Everyone get free school, free healthcare, free dentist till 20 y old and more. EVERYONE. Not only rich people or families that work themselves to death. Your system doesn’t really support the ideology of a democracy.
Current rate in the UK is £1=$1.6358.
8000 gems costs £85, which works out at $139.04. Taking out 20% UK VAT that would be $115.87, or 15% more than is paid in the USA before taxes (and UK sales taxes are higher at 20%)..
But UK prices on all goods and services from USA games, etc have always been higher – and I’ve never seen a game adjust a price in £ downwards to take account of currency fluctuations…
What i know.
US warranty 1 year
EU warranty 2 year (law)
I am from EU (Belgium) the vat here is 21 procent on wares.
The taxes on paycheck’s in BE are the highest of the world arround 50 up to 60 procent goes off, no joking
The 50 a 60 procent they take goes to,
-Healthcare(includes hospitalcare, doctervisit’s,dentalcare, ect)
-Socialcare
-Retirement
-unemployement(when ya lose your job ya get paid by the gouverment )
-infrastructure
For an example,in the US you can choose if ya pay for healtcare or not here ya have it by law so you pay for it no choice,a good thing tho if you are sick a lot ect. but if ya sometimes get sick or never get sick ye its expensive wel these a day’s its all freaking expensive eh
back to op’s post, yes its cheaper in the US no doubt about it,I travelled to the US many times for my job,When i was in Ellensburg (Washington) working at the Wild horse site i went to a motordealer and for example the Yamaha R1 new was arround 14000 Dollar’s, here in EU BE its arround 17000 Euro’s do the math.
Kind regard’s ya all
