I prefer gw1 model. No bs gem store, no laughable fees (what are we in the 90’s or something?), only your yearly expansion worth $30-40 with tones of new content for you to do. I don’t support their gem store crap, wouldn’t play the game at all if it had a monthly fee but i’d buy their expansion if it has anything else but jumping puzzles and casual content

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

The main issue revolves (as ever in MMO’s of any nature) over some players simply wanting something for nothing. It was the downfall of WoW when they started catering for kids who wanted the same rewards for less effort in terms of raiding loot, and it now extends out to pretty much all F2P MMO’s whereby people think that they should have some right to have everything they need in the game without ever spending a penny.

There are two options, either play for free and have limitations on what you have access to, or pay for gems and put money back into the game that you are playing (and contribute to the update of content that you so enjoy) and get those items you are lusting after. A potential 3rd option for those who complain about the expense of bag slots and bank extensions….don’t hoard so much useless crap you will never use or can do without!

Personally, for the sake of a months subscriptions to another MMO, you can get what you need most of the time and if you can’t then you don’t really need it. I for one do not spend many gems because I am a very casual player, and I enjoy the fact that I have no guilt over not playing for a week while i’m working or whatever…but if I do come back and think I need something I can still get it to enhance my game experience while I am actually playing.

I just think people complaining on gems prices need to either stop being so tight and spend some real money to enhance their experience or stop expecting something for nothing.

Guild Wars 1? Really? LMAO!

Guild Wars 1 shows you that in a NON MMO (which is much cheaper to run than an MMO), with a staff of 50 people, in a game made 8 years ago, you can get by without strong depency on a cash shop. That’s ALL Guild Wars 1 shows you. Period.

I agree that it was probably cheaper to run. I disagree that the cash shop was very limited. Also don’t forget the expansions that were sold separately. I remember mercenaries, cosmetic changes etc. I think the cash shop was actually a pretty good one. Better than the current one in my view as it had more interesting items for me.

If Guild Wars 1 were a true MMO, if they needed servers that had a couple of hundred people all moving and fighting at the same time, a staff of over 300, bigger headquarters, and more overhead in general, coming out today instead of 8 years ago….

Well, I don’t know. There will always be discussions about this but what is the difference between GW1 and a true MMO? Let’s see what was missing from the normal MMO formula….oh yeah a persistent world. Well, let me tell you something, they would’ve been better of not doing that because this beloved persistent world is mostly empty and a waste of space.

Guild Wars 1 would never have been sustainable in today’s environment.

Nice assumption, I disagree. People said it couldn’t work when it came out and it did far better than Anet expected themselves. I think they could’ve done it again.

It did great when it had like only MMOs to compete with, all of which had subscriptions. In today’s environment… not so much.

There’s no way you can compare this game and that game, unless you throw away all the facts surrounding issue.

One of the main reasons people picked this game up is because it doesn’t have a sub. That was the same for GW1. I agree that both games are totally different but I do not share your opinion that a game like GW1 couldn’t have worked nowadays.

People do have more options now because more and more games offer f2p options but remember that wasn’t the case when GW2 was released and that’s when the vast majority of sales were created.

I think it would have worked to some extent, you’re right. but I don’t think, given the massive amount of content people require off their MMO’s these days that it would have been as much of a success. GW1 did not have the amount of PvE content that ANet are trying to achieve with GW2 and in order to constantly bring new ideas to the forefront you will need a constant stream of cash. I personally think the main issue isn’t with the F2P with gemstore vs pay-for-expansion, it’s more that at the time of GW2 release it was a fairly unheard of system in main-stream releases, something that was the sole feature of cheaper freebie MMO’s out there which were in essence F2Win. Since it’s release though, plenty of others have gone F2P (Rift for one big example) and have succeeded in offering massive content without the feeling of restriction of GW2 for some.

These games seem to have caught the eye on F2P a bit better and WoW remains a colossus even with its dwindling numbers on the subs-based market. GW2 just struggles to find it’s niche with the player base now other than those of us who enjoy the more casual nature of its F2p system as it is.

Every new MMO or MMO style game needs more content nowadays. I am not saying that an exact copy of GW1 would work now, but the biggest difference is a persistent world which is mostly empty in GW2 and many other MMOs.

Sure, improvements would have to be made and things added like 3D maps and crafting and maybe even make max level zones persistent but keep leveling instanced. Any game can fail or be successful but to simply say that a game like GW1 couldn’t work in the current climate is too big an assumption for me.

Also as I said, GW2 had it’s biggest sales just before a lot of other MMOs started with f2p options. That competitive edge is now gone. GW2 has done well but I think it is a struggle as you say.

Still, to stay on topic a bit….adding a sub to GW2 would not be wise at all. I prefer sub games for various reasons but I don’t think it would work for GW2 as it is. What they really need to do is make a better quality cash shop. Better items mostly.

Its a very fine line to walk between being fair to your customers and make then feeling like they miss out too much if they dont put out cash. For now they are doing a fine job, but its very easy to fall off.

I will NEVER pay a fee just to log in a game again. GW2 has proven that you don’t need sub fees to maintain and grow a MMO, heck they are putting out more content than sub based games.

It has actually kind of proven you DO need subscription fees to deliver large, meaty content updates on a regular schedule. Compare what WoW has released over the past year to what GW2 has and there’s simply no comparison — WoW wins hands down.

Considering how much bigger Blizz is, their content output is laughable. Not to mention it’s always dungeons raids and more raids. Regular schedule? Like the 6+ months without any update prior to the release of MoP? It’s not like they gave you MoP for free now is it

Subscription fees are the biggest scam of videogaming. Only EVE deserves one, because you can pay for it with in-game gold and because their meaty updates are FREE, like they should.

Once again… if you want to buy these skins you can now buy them off of the tp. That was a huge move towards reducing any ethical problems (or whatever) people may have. Now nothing is forcing you to gamble with the BL keys…

These skins do not drop in the normal world to appear on the TP for sale. Someone goes through the unethical steps to acquire them before putting them up for sale. If I buy shoes at Wal-Mart made in some foreign country by enslaved children, that doesn’t absolve them of any guilt or blame.

Yes, pretty much doble dipping customers wallet. It even went to triple dipping with SWTOR: sub+cash shop+paid content updates.

Wildstar/ESO are also doing double dipping and theres high probability they will try triple dip.

I dont mind developers getting paid. I mind in the way some developers/publishers want to pull it off. In that respect few games like GW2/EvE/Lineage 2 are shining examples and games like SWTOR/EQ2 are worst offenders.

In DH there is a player in LA. They’re often found dancing in their underwear with boxing gloves on, bunny ears, and a plush quaggan backpack.

I’m sorry but if I’m entering into an Ayleid ruin, I don’t want to come across another player wearing a plush mudcrab backpack followed by a mini flame atronach I’ll uninstall the game right there.

I’m not a role player but I like games that enforce a certain atmosphere and crap like that would absolutely kill the Elderscroll’s atmosphere.

I had to respond to this because it made me laugh so hard. You should consider comedy as a second career.

I also like having fun but you are right about atmosphere. I am ok with most of the fluff items in GW2. However, none of that stuff has a place in TESO.

I am passing on TESO. Made that decision long before they announced sub-based model. Their sub approach only reinforces my resolve to not buy/play it.

I never wanted a multiplayer version of TES. I still am playing Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind. In that IP, I just like being the sole hero and impacting the world the way I see fit. Example – love playing a thief and stealing a store blind. How will I do that in TESO? If I take everything, what will the next player have to interact with?

Can you feel it? HOT HOT HOT

No offense to anyone here, but if Anet made the subscription fee one dollar a month, I still wouldn’t pay for it. Heck, I even regret spending 30 bucks on this game already. No, Guild Wars 1 shows you that you don’t necessarily have to have a ton of items in the gemstore to bring in income. GW1 had about 3 costumes and a few extra items, and it thrived for many, many years even being constantly updated and changed. The base box price should bring in enough income for Anet to happily produce content for years already, they don’t need the gemstore or a subscription fee. Sure, why wouldn’t Anet want a gemstore? It’s more money for them, but they don’t need it to keep the game running. It’s just like extra pocket change. It’s nice to have, but you don’t need it.

“Guild Wars” 1. “Guild Wars” 2. Hmmm, something fishy here if I can’t compare the games. Again, you misunderstand me and you missed my other point entirely apparently. I said that the base box price of 60 dollars should be enough for GW2 to thrive for awhile. Anet really does not need the gemstore at all, like I said, it’s just pocket change to them. Of course, GW2 will start to decline as all mmo’s eventually do, and when that happens, then and only then will they start using that extra pocket change to keep the game going. I won’t pretend that I know how much income Anet received from the boxes, but I know that it will sustain the game for quite awhile, and if people really are still buying GW2, then Anet is bringing in even more profit.

And as to your point, Guild Wars 1 is still alive and probably will be for awhile yet. It’s still sustaining itself (I believe. They may be using money from GW2 to support it).
