I thought the same. It’s an odd thing. I’m not sure how many characters were created with names that would work for both sexes, not too many I would guess. That said, rather have the option to change gender than not, of course I doubt the uptake will be that high due to the naming issue, but at least it’s available to those that might want it.

Ya I watched someone do that, and was thinking. Wait a second why would you change gender if your name was Steve or something and you were stuck with that.

They are saying there are issues with offering name changes, yet they are able to force mandatory name changes, with out issues, for those who’s names are found to be against the ToS. Doesn’t make much sense, does it?

It does. A handful of people changing names is different that a large group of people doing it.

It really does sound silly offering total conversions though and not being able to Rename, honestly to me this is a valid complaint if ever i’ve seen one.

If you can change a character’s entire appearance and their name, you might as well make a new character. It only costs 800 gems, or a spare slot. As a bonus you can change the profession too, and you can either keep the original character or free up the slot.

The amount of people that will gender change without being able to change their name must be tiny, unless of course they picked generic names, like “Deathdealer”, “Firestarter” etc….

Cant see this being a major source of revenue (coming soon to a TP near you “Name Change Document”, all for an additional 500 Gems (+ whatever it costs for a makeover pack, see what I did there, doubled my revenue for 1 activity (A total character appearance change, woot at me))

Total Transformations. Think of the gender change like you would in real life. Does your self-identity change just because the physical bits did? Every single person I know who’s opted to go by another name in any relevant situation has done so separately from the physical change.

But that’s more of a meta/roleplay perspective. Practically speaking maybe Names are just linked to a different string of code than appearance. It’d probably take a lot of extra programming to have one item affect both. Or perhaps something about name changes are currently linked too closely to Moderator/GM/Administrative functions and they’re working on a way to separate the process so there aren’t any nasty consequences.

This thread just put the spanner into the works for my plan to turn my male mesmer into a female … she wouldn’t look right with such a manly name … please ANet give us an option to change the name with the transformation kit.

I guarantee name change would increase revenue immensely. It really doesn’t make sense that they add a complete character revamp without the name.

I’ve been waiting for name change option since release, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to find a name I liked for at least a month considering every single possible name and combination I liked were taken the instant the servers went live.

So I am running around with a silly stupid filler name, and I’ll probably never get to change it. ANet seem to be slow in the head when it comes to the most basic of issues.

If your character is already level 80, why would you want to level from scratch just because you aren’t happy with it’s appearance?

Yeah…learned that the hard way. Changed gender, then realized I couldn’t change the name. Changed back…oh well.

Good point Mandrax. Although I enjoy playing, so wouldn’t mind it too much. Others might see it as a chore though, when they already have a level 80. Thinking about it, you’d also lose any soulbound equipment you have, which could be a bigger issue.

The soulbound isn’t connected to the name, but to the actual character code. It’s why you can’t delete a character, create a new one with the same name, and use the first characters equipment that was bound to them.

My grandfather’s name was Carrol. Just saying :P
