Welcome back to the New Guild Wars 2. The amount of players across all the servers seems to have dipped dramatically. The most people you’ll probably see are during the first day of a new Living Story event (every two weeks). The others will be Champion farming in Queensdale or Frostgorge Sound. Occasionally a group will appear to do World Bosses depending on your server. However, do not expect to see many running through the open world, this game is not like it was during launch.

There’s actually more players now than at launch. But there’s more things to do outside of the open world (dungeons, fractals, the new Tower in Kessex Hills, instanced mini-games, etc.) and just like all MMOs the mid-level maps are quiet (unless there is an event of course).

I’m still hitting overflows every day and queues for WvW. Your server may vary.

any advice for leveling?

If this is your first time to 80 then just explore and do maps. Take your time to enjoy the game. No need to rush things, even with the living story. If you rush to 80 and expect great things to change… then yeah you’ll be disappointed.

If this is not your first 80… the fastest way, though at a nice steep cost, would be to craft to 80. An easy yet boringly redundant way is to take part in the Queensdale Champion train. Your brain might go to mush though due to the monotony of it all, plus you won’t really learn your class mechanics well that way. WvW levelling is supposed to be pretty good and you’ll really learn your class through that way. Or any mix really of activities. You do anything in this game, other than spvp, and you get experience so just play how you want

Guest over to busier servers if you’re doing open world content and not living story content. There are still plenty of people doing living story content. There are also champ trains in most servers in Queensdale and Frostgorge sound.

Or join a guild that has people in it that level and enjoy guild chat, instead of map chat (which is usually better anyway in my opinion). There are more people socializing in guilds right now than in the open world.
