Getting back into the game.
Mawdrey was the first thing I did when I came back from my break. It’s fun to do and doesn’t feel like a chore. And the LS2 is mostly fun, too.
Baseline (not only for GW2): Don’t do anything you don’t think is fun!
I like to run around Silverwastes doing the events there. Vine Wrath is always a fun boss imo. I run dungeons and fractals with my guild, recently have really started to get into pvp. Trying to focus on crafting recently and get my first ascended armor set. Always doing the dailys on reset.
There are plenty of things to do if you look around.
The Secksy Monk [Guild Wars 1]
Stormbluff Isle – Storm Slayer Dragons [SDS]
Don’t do anything you don’t think is fun!
It sort of comes from my intense desire to fling rainbows at people, and such led into my oft-failed quest to build a Bifrost.
Mawdrey looks like it’s mostly LW2 completion with a bit of RNG. Is there anything I need to look out for?
Only get Mawdrey if you have gold to burn and want that ascended backpiece. Eating dust will get you mostly random junk and the occasional green. I wouldn’t get it for that reason.
Gemstore wise for QOL purchases, it’s generally recommended you buy the copper fed salvage. If they ever sell the Royal Terrace pass again, I recommend that.
Look into getting Princess if you don’t have it already and the Star of Gratitude if they bring that back next Wintersday.
ANet may give it to you.
I have a legendary and feel your pain. Well, sort of, because I am odd enough not to mind grind all that much. I totally understand why people burn out trying for one, though. Bifrost is pretty, btw.
Mawdrey – yes, she is pricey in terms of opportunity costs, but you can farm all the stuff needed for her.

I actually do have a Star of gratitude! It was an odd bit of “FINE! I’ll play, but I’m only going to do wintersday stuff!!” ;3
I’ll look into getting a Princess, thanks
What burned you out last time? That might impact suggestions.
But even without that take a second and ask yourself if you are having fun in game on what you are doing. If the answer is no, then stop and see why. Its a game and it should be relaxing. If you find you are transferring real life issues to in game issues then that’s a different story. If its in game issues it might be that you were forcing yourself for whatever reason to do things that you didn’t really enjoy but felt forced into. Stop those.
There are not a lot of things that are so time sensitive that you should feel rushed. Start slowly and re-evaluate things that you are doing and do a fun check. Is it fun, yes, then go, else pause.
Depending on your personality you might also give yourself goals or just go with the flow. Word of advice for Mawdrey, take your time since if you rush it might regain that feeling of work that you experienced from before.
If you are routine based, set some time for a project like Mawdrey and some time for other things, some WvW, PvP, Fractals, crafting, exploring.
If you are guilded, see what’s going on in guild and see where that takes you. Something that can be fun is get a guild group and run a round of caller’s choice. Aka give each party member a block of time and they run the group through an activity. That way you get a mix of varied things and could find yourself going from AC1 to Ranked PvP to the silverwaste in short order to end up in a jumping puzzle or running from zergs while harvesting mats in a WvW zone.
If you are in a guild you enjoy, focus on activities with people that relax you and not ones that stress you. If not guilded, try and find one, it might be a matter of finding people that compliment you and are a positive influence on you and that can make you laugh and smile.
In any case, have fun, it is a game. Play as long as you are having fun. Good gaming to you and if I catch you in game, Good Hunting!

I will take to heart your suggestions, and did want to reply to your opening question:
What burned me out was literally the grind for money. I was playing during the height of the farm nerfs and diminishing returns sillyness, so it felt like there was this big hammer that would flatten me every time I found something doable. And by doable I mean not an entirely soul-crushing emotional and mental drain as I slowly eke out money and/or materials. In the end my quest ended with 135 Gold in bank, 125 or so Ecto, and about 100 of every Tier 6 material. All other gifts/shards/clovers/etc done. And no precursor.
I still want to shoot Rainbows. I really, really do. But it got to the point where I was logging in just to grind. So needed to step away from that.
Then just play for the sake of playing
Any recommendations for getting back into the game? I burned out while trying to build a legendary and it started to feel more like work than a game for me to farm. (Seriously, I’ve played on/off since launch. RNG apparently hates me. Whatever).
So I’m trying to get back into the game. I’ve bought the living world packs and I’m working my way through those currently. Any quality of life/sanity suggestions? Things I should work towards to get more out of my game? For one, I think I need to start towards a Mawdrey since I have 5k in dust.
it depends why you played in the 1st place, why do you play MMORPGs ?
if its for the living story then absolutely not. there are single player RPGs on the market right now that blow living story out of the water a hundred fold. Witcher 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition just last 2 I played through. Also, since you can save and return to those at your leasure, they are far more casual friendly then any MMO can ever be.
If you played to be a part of a persistant world etc. then its so-so.
to me, the only real aspect of MMORPGs is the community, unfortunately that has degraded greatly within last few months. Community here used to be tied to servers, mostly PvX players and often started / included WvW. WvW communities have been gutted and are dying for wide range of reasons and it affects other areas of the game.
The PvE guilds / communities just aren’t the same, they feel filtered, censored and diluted in comparison, there is no “togetherness”, no reliance on each other. All that stuff is just absent.
So its up to you, but unless you actually like hanging out with people within the game, it is not worth returning to.
Find a guild whose company you enjoy.
The social aspect of doing things with friends has been a great way to keep things fun and fresh for me.
Welcome back and have fun!

If grinding for a hard-to-reach goal felt like work and burned you out before, it will probably feel the same way again. Been there, done that.
What has been working for me is not worrying about that sort of stuff and just gravitating to the sort of gameplay I enjoy. In the process of doing that, money, loot and resources accumulate naturally — to the point that if I wanted to, I could buy a legendary off the TP instead of jumping through all the hoops. But so far, I really haven’t wanted to. YMMV.
Heart of Thorns will be introducing new ways of getting legendaries that may prove to be more enjoyable than the current regime, so it may be worth waiting for that.
Whatever the case, if it feels like work, then it’s not really fun. Getting a legendary item in a game you don’t enjoy playing — and end up not playing anymore as a result — would be pointless. So just do what you like, and see where it leads.
Here’s hoping it leads somewhere fun.
