Getting mad already
Having to wait an hour to get on the Tequatl server was there long before Megaservers.
I wasn’t playing for some time, started again just after that update with mega’s. the problem is not owerflows/megaservers. the problem is not keeping sessions alive for short amount of time imho.

How would the game know who disconnected without meaning to, who quit, who disconnected because of a problem server side and not client side. Who disconnected and will try to reconnect immediately vs calls it a night or simply is unable to reconnect for a while (due to say a power-cut)
In the meantime if the server reserves the spot just in case the person reconnects it would be putting everyone who tries to join into one of those overflows you want to avoid yourself potentially for nothing.
Of course like you say there is the other side of the coin, you joined early to get a good spot sacrificed an hour (though you’re free to play while you’re waiting) and get disconnected through no fault of your own its not fair that you get penalized because of that.
there are two faces for this and its hard to see which is the best route to go with to be honest. That being said I wouldnt say only the first 2 or first x instances have a chance to win. Like someone said this issue has existed from before the megaserver times and actually technically was much worst before where you only had 1 main instance and all the others where random overflows now at least you have 5 main maps and then the others are random instances. Even so I think I’ve beaten Tequalt more times in an overflow then I didnt in a main. I would say rather then the first 2 instances having a big advantage its probably more like the last instance has a huge disadvantage because it might lack the number of players necessary to win the event while all the instances before are full. There is of course also an element of how good and organized the players in an instance are but on which instance they are is probably the luck of the draw more then anything else.
Galen, you will be surprised. But session reservation is available almost in all major MMO’s.
1-2 minutes is not so long time. Even in WOW with much heavier server load and thousands people in queue you can jump in same session after 5 minutes.
I think people who was waiting 1h+ deserves their spot after game client crashes or just random DC.

What Krex said in his following reply to this is 100% correct, even GW1 had this system in place.
Mud Bone – Sylvari Ranger
The hour wait was there long before Mega came about.
Plus It’s natural .. 150ish players per map .. thousands of players wanting to do it.. do the maths.
Plus the org runs want to get there so they can set up and set out the plan for any new players.
Who says its wasted? I go out to gather mats while i wait.. or do something else.
and the disconnect issues can’t always be blamed on anet either.. + the whole server thing has alrdy been mentioned in the above
RIP City of Heroes

I agree, there should be a reconnect function if you DC and want to get back to the same megaserver. It can get very frustrating sometimes.
fyi, 30min early is more than enough for teq.
Now more than ever with the megalaser fix. So you don’t have to wait an hour.
__
but yeah I’ve dc’d just before teq and during teq before. It would be fantastic if it held map place for 2min if you disconnect. generally doesn’t take longer than that to log back on.
I thought GW2 promised that we won’t have to wait to have fun?
What happened?
Waiting is one thing, not necessary that bad, but playing with randoms and not being able to play with all your friends is wrong and bad design.
