Is there a reason why i can’t gift gems through the game store?

Because ArenaNet has not implemented such a service? There are a few things that can not be gifted. It might have something to do with RMTs; I don’t know.

To not open up another source of funds for existing gold sellers? They could use their “slave” labor to earn gold (and/or steal gold / gems from account hacking) and then undercut Anet RL $ gem prices.

There are lots of different vendors that sell gem cards, as noted on the wiki . Nearly all of them can go out of stock, so keep trying. Once you have the card, you can send the unlock code to someone else.

Generally speaking, you are able to gift anything that sells in the gem shop except for account unlocks (mail carriers, finishers, storage upgrades, …).

We can’t gift gems directly because gems can be acquired with coin, which means there’s no value to the game (or the community as a whole) to have the feature: if you want to donate to a friend, send them gold; if you want to gift them, use the gem shop feature to do just that.

Then buy 6 2k cards? I’ve never seen a discount buying 12k instead of 2k cards (tho you can get cards for slightly less than gems purchased in game). Retailers don’t stock the 12K cards because they likely have a horrific turnover (compared to the 2k cards).
