Girls playing GW2
She needs to learn the basics more or less on her own. Unless her IQ is in double digits it won’t take long and it’ll be less frustrating for both of you. Once she can move, attack, open her inventory and so forth THEN get together and baby-step through a starter zone.
You need to have more patience with somebody learning a new concept. Without patience, you freak out on her and then the whole experience goes down the drain.
Lots of newbies can’t handle the double-tap to dodge thing, so have her bind it to a key instead.
ASUS Sabertooth Z77 | 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866MHz @ 2400MHz
Samsung 840 PRO 512GB SSD | Windows 10 x64
Make her play something like Doom. Half an hour of killing the spawns of Hell she should have enough of a grasp of WASD movement to play anything. If that still fails, there’s always Angry Birds.
How is it any different teaching a girl to play than a guy? Whatever!
Yea tell me about it, all my buddys were running dungeons and I had to " sit that one out " to help her, shes not a slow person at all its just shes trying to get into it cause since this game came out the crew has stopped coming out as much cause were to busy playing lol so she wanted in. I think il get her to practice on her own but I thought I could expediate the process if I was there.
Does she play games at all? Maybe she is just not used to moving with a keyboard?
If that is the case let her try and walk with her mouse by holding the left and right buttons. Frankly I think it is awesome that she wants to try it again given how frustrated and confused she must have felt.
Oh and btw I am a woman ;P

Most guys have been into video games from an early age, she is just getting into it.
This isn’t a girl issue it’s a non-gamer issue. Learning to move and interact with the world is an art and takes some practice. Don’t get frustrated be patient and I hope you think it’s cute how she’s inept…
Aside from rook’s tact, I think its meaning was probably on the right track. When I have girls over, playing video games is the last thing I’m interested in doing…get your head out of the keyboard and show her your not a complete dork.

What? Just getting it out of the way before someone who actually means it comes in and says it.
I don’t see how her being a girl is relevant at all. Let her figure it out on her own and she’ll be fine. You never know, once she gets the hang of it she might just be better than you! :P
I would suggest to her though to do some research on the internet to learn more about the game in general and perhaps she’ll come upon some tips and guides from other players. That will definitely be a good way to get the ball rolling.
My best advice: leave her alone until she’s comfortable with the basic controls of the game. Then you can start hurrying her along. But if you pressure her and make her all nervous she probably will just give up.

Thats a good idea, not that I was poking fun at women its just as a general bias most guys dont know many girls who are MMO pros

Still has nothing to do with her gender. I’ve been playing video games for as long as I can remember.

There may be more of us than you think.
Oh dear, I’m afraid it is simply impossible to teach girls to play videogames because their tiny, female fingers do not have enough strength to hold the mouse.
You will have to play the game for your friend while she giggles shyly from underneath her parasol.
Edit: I don’t mean to be snarky (well, I did), but this thread seems like a relic from the ancient past of “no girls on the internet.” Weird to see someone posting something like this in earnest.

You can’t blame him, it’s a pretty understandable stereotype. Video Games are almost always seen as the “guy’s” domain. Should instead be lauding him at trying to help break that stereotype by getting more girls interested.

True. Most girls don’t go around advertising in game that they’re girls, usually because we feel it doesn’t matter. We’re too busy having fun and playing the game and if you happen to be a guildie and we’re in vent together you’ll figure it out.
I was helping old people learn to surf the net. Talk about needing patient.
Why is this called “Girls playing GW 2”? It sounds like you’re suggesting women are somehow inferior to men, and that just because your girlfriend doesn’t get it, that women as a whole have problems playing a game. Talk about sexist.

LOOOOL!
When I started playing, I could not stand having my boyfriend looking over my shoulder. I felt clumsy and dumb. It was more fun just figuring it out on my own, asking the occasional question. Let her find her own way in her own pace.

Yeah, have to put on a good poker face when they start scrolling down a page by clicking on the “down arrow” on the scroll bar 3 lines at a time.

Girls playing guild wars 2 is relevant to the general idea of what im discussing, my friend a girl is playing guild wars 2.
You mad?

Clearly the hornet’s nest has been stirred up. Just having a good time here.

By who? I have always known girls that liked playing both video and computer games. As for that last sentence, that’s laughable. We don’t need to praise anyone, that’s actually somewhat offensive that someone should be praised for getting a girl interested in a game.

Girls are not relevant at all. You got a friend interested in the game who is new to the genre. That’s it. Nothing new here. If it were a guy you wouldn’t bother posting and you’d just let him figure it out himself without a second thought.
You mad?
Hell yes. I see no reason to treat all women as inferior to men at the task of playing video games. Your title should read, “Teaching my (girl)friend to play”
I used to teach English as a foreign language, so I’m gonna offer some (frankly unrelated) pointers.
Be patient, don’t act terrified, identify with friends or a counselor why you’re terrified, and above all be patient. Don’t sound condescending, and try not to take delight in her difficulty.
There’s also a pretty good chance that she likes you if she’s doing this, so don’t be awful or exploitative. Good luck.

You have it all figured out, I think you should quit your day job and become a Forum Moderator. Seriously

This is pretty much the closest answer Il get to what I was hoping to hear, Thanks and good advice.
I wonder if I’m the only one not offended by the title :’)
First learning task: navigate
Explore the starting city. See how some of the people are marked differently, as vendors, bankers, etc.
Takes pushing the W key to go forward and turn with the mouse.
Next go to starting area and do the basic stuff. This game helps by severely limiting what you can do at first, but doesn’t do very good scaffolding along the way.
Your first renown heart almost definitely will teach to use F and pay attention to on screen messages. Should be able to win every fight with auto-attack.
Keys in helping a newbie -
1. Keep the keyboard and mouse in her hands only.
2. Understand step-by-step. Shut up about your awesome 80 traits and BS.
3. Encourage good habits, but leave her some space to learn it herself, and find her own way.
My best advice is to show her how to move with the mouse and and just let her play on her own pc next to you while you are running a dungeon. She’ll figure it out soon enough and she won’t get as frustrated. The world is beautiful and very accessible. GW2 is a great game for introducing some-one to gaming.
I’m stunned people are getting offended by this lol. Something that is actually positive. This is why we can’t have nice things.
