I’m creating this thread here for now, because the most people will see it and I want to include as many people as possible in the discussion. The purpose of this thread is to share ideas using art (concept or otherwise), or other pictures to share what you want with the community, and ArenaNet developers alike so that they may potentially draw inspiration from our ideas & also get a good sense of where their player-base stands on the types of looks we want for our characters.

PLEASE keep the discussion civil, and open minded as many of us are bound to have different tastes and opinions so please be respectful

Everyone is welcome to join in the discussion, you do not have to post art if you don’t want to, but please do be constructive and descriptive.

We cannot expect everyone to be a deeply talented concept artist who wants to openly share their own works in our conversation so please don’t be shocked and bewildered when we post art and designs from other games & forms of media as a source of inspiration. I think it goes without saying that you are more than welcome to share your own pieces with the community as well if you wish to.

My first contribution is an idea for a mesmer-friendly set using concept art from AION’s bard class.

Aion has very beautiful armors, i certainly wouldn’t mind seeing stuff like that in gw2.

I know what you mean lol. I really love corsets & skirts, don’t necessarily have to be naked to be sexy etc. But there are indeed an over-abundance of coats.

BLASPHEMY!!!

I would love to see some kind of Conan-ish heavy armor with lots of skin for males and much less skin for females for a change. Like a furry loincloth and a necklace (for chest) in the male version and some chainmail tank top for the ladies.

Yes! I wasn’t happy with my rangers look at all till i grinded my virtual butt off for the human t3(underboob doesn’t bother me) but it looks like my hard work will be for nothing if they keep this gem store cultural armor stuff.

I agree! I love the Scarlet pants (mini skirt and long socks/stockings) but I’ve tried every top with it. The only one I’ve liked, is another gemstore outfit I’m not going to spend $20 for just a set of pants and a shirt, have the rest thrown away or blocking up bank space, AND have to choose if this is going to cover my (main) WvW armor set, or my (main) PvE set.

I’d be tempted to buy it if it was sold in individual pieces, and be CRAZY tempted to buy it if I could have access to unlimited copies. Actually no, nix that, I WOULD buy them. Full set and all.

That would mostly be Kristen Perry, she still works for ArenaNet on GW2.

They had another guy by the name of Hyojin Ahn who departed from ArenaNet upon the launch of GW2. he appears to be responsible for our T3 cultural armor designs as well as the Orr temple light armor, etc.

My next contribution is a piece of concept art I found floating around the internet a few days ago and I liked most of the design. Another light armor set (can you tell my main is currently a mesmer lol)

Someone said it may be from a game called Magna Carta. Whatever the case, I think it would be neat to have something similar, it’s stylish and fits the setting of GW2. She’s not naked, but it’s still really feminine and fantasy-like and could honestly work for medium armor, too.

Eww forced pvp no thanks. While aion is pretty, i did not enjoy being steam rolled by level capped players while trying to do a quest at lvl 30. No fun at all.

How about some tasteful wizard robes? No?

Take everything you hate about RNG in Guild Wars 2. Multiply that by 10,000. Then, add an ever-increasing level cap and huge vertical gear progression with every update. Now, multiply the number of money sinks by 500. That’s Aion.

It’s a very pretty game, but it’s got next to no appeal outside of Asia. For some reason, eastern gaming markets love RNG and vertical progression. To be fair, they’re probably as mystified as we are when they hear we don’t like it.

That’s also why many of us are so frustrated with ascended gear and RNG stuff. If we wanted vertical progression, there are dozens of games out there like Aion that not only already do that, but do it better.

I am sorry to say this but you accusing Anet of not being creative and I do agree with that to a point, but then you’re posting armor from other games. That has nothing to do with being creative or getting fresh idea’s for upcoming patches. I think that our community can come up with something very nice and stunning that’s not copied and pasted from other games.

Nailed it, right there. There is SOOOOOOOO much potential for ascended armor in this game, and i just cringe at how it has been squandered thus far. The idea’s myself and others have for armor skins are just absolutely amazing, i mean the list of potential ideas are endless. But not only armors, new weapons and items as well that expand the game even further, and hopefully, eventually…make RNG actually work properly so that you are rewarded for your time you spend fighting bosses.

I would love to see some sort of shadow effect armor like what you posted. WoW armors are kinda similar to that, although aions graphics are 100x better then wow ever was.

Reinassance Era type of skins. Like Granado Espada. That game even had a community contest for designing new armors and stuff. The first pic I posted was the grand prize winner of the said contest. Although their armors will greatly benefit Humans and Norn and Sylvari to an extent but might be very tough to make Charr and Asura versions.

content has to be modified by 25% to avoid copyright, exception on items that are trademarked. Then that’s a whole different topic we are looking at

Nice. Pardon me (and other people, for that matter) for not being a good enough drawing artists to be able to accurately depict the types of skins I would like to see in game. Excuse me for using art from other resources as a source of inspiration, as almost all concept design is inspired by previous works through out history. And please, excuse me for starting my own topic, and involving the rest of the community to bring about what types of armor they too would like to see in the game using whatever means they feel most comfortable using.

If somebody wants to donate their own unique artwork to the topic and/or Anet, then that would be fantastic. I’m sure we’d all love and appreciate it, but since that currently is not happening, and I’m not going to hold my breath that it will…We’re going to use what we can. There’s nothing wrong with posting art from other games or other types of media to inspire, or get inspired by. It’s simply sharing the styles & imagery we like. We’re not literally asking them to copy & paste these exact pieces into skins in GW2.

As for saying ArenaNet isn’t creative. I didn’t say exactly that, what I said was one could get the impression they’re lacking creativity & direction on their armor skin designs. That’s not saying they really are, but the fact they copy > pasted skins you can already get in-game into the gem shop with fire effects sprinkled on them does not leave anybody with all that much faith, either.

There are so many GW1 costumes/outfits that they could’ve used for the gemstore instead of using the t3 human light cultural armor. -_- WHY anet, why?!

Oh that’s where that set is from! I think that setting fits GW2’s setting pretty nicely as well. Thanks for sharing.

I like the hairstyle on the female Aura in the 3rd link, and would actually like some outfits to be feminine on female Asura &not just copy/pasted versions of the male skins. So I like those too. Nice find!

I think Anet should bring back some of the most popular GW1 skins, re-obtainable in GW2 through WvW badges of honor/dungeon tokens/gold/gemstore purchases/monster drops etc.

I remember how amazing those tormented weapons in GW1 were. And the chaos gloves… and ritualist fissure of woe armour… the list is endless.
