Pretty much that, I want to voice out my dislike about things that are nice and pretty locked behind an RNG lockbox.

Why not just add the glider to the gemstore like all the others?

I’m more than happy to throw money at Guild Wars 2, recommend all my friends about this game; but I also like to get what I pay for, I don’t like gambling my money away! :c

Thanks for reading this tiny rant, Happy Wintersday!

Lots of love,
Kitty

This subject has been covered over and over.

The same points keep being made …. you are CHOOSING to gamble if you buy black lion chests and keys. Complaining about your choices to do so is moot.

If you want a guaranteed glider, buy it in the gem store since you have no problems supporting Anet

The problem is there are some gliders which are only available though the chests, so if you want them you don’t have a choice – you gamble or you miss out. (Or you gamble and miss out because you don’t get that specific drop.)

I don’t understand why they’re doing it either. I always thought one of the best things about the chests was they’re completely optional because everything in them is either tradable or available somewhere else so you only need to gamble if you want to. Then they changed that. I’m highly sceptical that it will get more people to buy keys so it seems to be purely disadvantaging people who can’t or won’t gamble for the items they want, and losing Anet money in the process.

I agree with this. I don’t think a cool glider skin that can’t be sold on the TP should be locked behind RNG.

Don’t like it either. It’s bad enough that they have put items only in 2000 gems boxes instead of selling the boxes and also separate items. This puts undue emphasis on gambling to get the glider or outfit. It makes it where it’s not possible to avoid gambling if you wish to get the item. Your choice is either to gamble or do without.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Yep. I saw someone link that Infinarium glider, which looks nice, except it’s only in the Black Lion Chests. No thanks. If I’m going to spend gems on anything, I’d rather know what I’m getting, not gamble.

Well .. Im not saying I agree with it, Im saying that the multiple threads about this subject are moot just like “make more armor over outfits”.

How about trying to offer Anet solutions, or alternatives to this instead? The money speaks for itself … If Anet is going to keep making money from gem purchases to buy keys etc then its not something thats going to stop … not without a full on boycott. Which will never happen! LOL complaint after complaint the main point is you still bought the gems and gambled and lost on something you knew you most probably would.

sigh ….

I dont like it either …. but im not going to post over and over and over to the forums when I chose to gamble.

So when we players don’t like a decision that ANet makes we’re supposed to keep quiet about it?

The OP complained that they did not like that the only way to obtain a glider was through the chests. No where in their post did they mention that they had spent a single gem or even did a key run to try for the glider.

Just that they did not like that there was a glider that was only obtainable through the chests.

I also do not like having things in the chests be chests only. Especially things that seem like they aren’t permanently going to be available in the chests. It would be one thing if that was going to be a permanent item in the chests, but given it’s name, it’s likely only around for Wintersday.

I guess I’m in the minority here. I like that they’re finally introducing things to the Black Lion chests to make them worth pursuing. I’m still a bit peeved that they’ve limited the home instance nodes to a small selection per seasonal chest as it’s caused the price of all of them to go up pretty significantly, but aside from that I like the variety of seeing new things added to the chests. Previously, there was very little point in seeking out keys as you would almost inevitably get boosters and other fairly useless consumables unless you got extremely, extremely lucky with a node or permanent contract. There really wasn’t much middle ground, it was either an extremely rare drop or mostly junk.

With the changes they’ve made, Black Lion Keys actually have some value to me now and I’ve found myself actually doing map completion again to hopefully get a key. Items like the Bitterfrost Vantage Point and the other BL chest account-bound exclusives are interesting enough to make the keys worthwhile, but not so interesting that they are required to play the game.

All of the items in these chests are superficial and not a single one of them is required for game progress. I’d really love to see more unique things added to the chest’s drop table as time goes on.

And regarding the Bitterfrost Vantage Point, a mesmer can port you up there if you really want to see what the fuss is about. It is not exciting in any way, it is simply a pretty little cliff with a tree. Whisper me the next time you see me online, I will be happy to log my mesmer and port you up so you can verify for yourself that you aren’t missing anything game-changing.

Locking it inside the BLC is not the problem. The problem is the inability of free trade. That is, items not being available for sale in the TP.

I have to say I enjoy the new items available in the Black Lion Chests, as well. Since I, nor anyone in my Guild, will likely never obtain a Legendary or such, having a chance at something cool works for us.

I understand not everyone likes all the game’s content or mechanics. This one is okay with me. If it stays around, it may indicate that it’s working for ArenaNet, as well. Time will tell.

Anet has to do what they can to boost sales and the best way is to lock items with only one source behind RNG. Instead of putting a definitive price on the item they can earn far more income behind a gamble. This ensures that those who want the item will spend much much more. Especially when it comes to BLC’s since the terrible changes that were made to them (reduced from 3 to 2 items). You have to buy keys for gems and gamble instead of 700 and get the guarantee..

a·chieve·ment – a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill
re·ward – a thing given in recognition of one’s service, effort, or achievement
en·ti·tle·ment – the belief one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment

Try slowly and carefully reading what she wrote, before you reply.

She’s saying that she WANTS THEM TO PUT THE GLIDER IN THE STORE INSTEAD OF RNG BOX… so she can just buy it, directly.

You always have a choice. If people didn’t support gamble boxes they would not exist. As long as they are the more profitable approach to releasing new skins they will be used as such. Every time a player buys a key to gamble for a new glider, or whatever, they are sending Anet a message saying, in essence, “I approve of this, please keep it up.” Complaining about it on the forums while telling Anet that you support it, with your money, is a waste of time.

I don’t understand why they’re doing it either.

The answer to, “why do they do X,” is almost always, “money!” If gamble boxes didn’t work they would not exist.

More and more keeps getting crammed into either Black Lion Chests, or some other form of “pay a ton of money for a lot of useless stuff and one item that you really should only have had to pay 400gems for”.

Enjoy it while you can, Anet. Sooner or later, people will get upset and demand that the govt. step in and stop this form of online gambling.

Anet has done this before when the game launched. A lot of people were very unhappy about gambling to get exclusive skins. They took the feedback then and changed things, but it seems they have reconsidered that decision.

Once again, I disagree with it. They had Braham’s outfit as both a drop and gem store purchase, I don’t see what is so terribly different with the gliders.

The Bitterfrost vista thingie I have a more mixed opinion about. It’s a small convenience, but not an advantage or anything visible like skins are. In principle I don’t like that it’s gated behind RNG, but can’t really bring myself to be too fussed over it.

But as has been said, the bottom line will be the profit margin. Vote with your wallet, but voicing an opinion doesn’t hurt either. It’s just that your dollar talks louder.

It’s a brilliant money making idea on their part – I’m surprised they haven’t exploited this revenue option tbh. Regardless of what you think there are people that will throw hundreds of gems at those boxes for a chance at getting exclusive loot. Expect more updates with this.

Just to clarify I have never bought a black lion key or any other type of RNG box and I never will. I won’t even buy keys with gold (or things like the Account Starter Pack which includes keys). I know it probably seems like a minor detail to some people but it bothers me that people are making that assumption about me. I really don’t like these things and I’m uncomfortable with the idea that people would assume I buy them.

I’m quite happy to spend real money to get things in the game, but only if it’s a direct sale. And I think it’s well worth letting Anet know that in at least some cases this practice means they are losing money, not making more, because people like me who want these items do not gamble for them, we just miss out and therefore Anet misses out on our money because they have changed the process in the past.

For example during the first Wintersday they were selling Wintersday Mystery Boxes – themed Black Lion Chests that didn’t need keys but only came from the gem store. Amongst other things they included a rare chance at 3 new minis (the Snowman, Festive Golem and Infiniarium) which could be combined to make a 4th (Foostivoo the Merry), these were all account bound so they couldn’t be traded either.

There were a lot of objections to those and over the last few years they have finally started making them available as in-game drops and made them tradable.

I literally cheered when I first found out about that. Even though I decided before release I’d collect minis in this game I refused to buy those boxes but it always bothered me that I missed out on the minis and could never complete my collection. I have never regretted that decision but I hated having to make it and I’m very happy that they fixed it. I’m hoping if we let Anet know how we feel about the current attempt they will once again take that feedback on board and act on it.

Those skins exclusive to the BL chests bother me too. I got one recently, had no use for it and can’t even sell or gift it. Useless.

I’ve never paid for a key so I guess it doesn’t hit me hard, but it’s just annoying to see that 4th slot pop and get something even worse than a tome.

You cut my post off in the middle of a sentence. What I said was “The problem is there are some gliders which are only available though the chests, so if you want them you don’t have a choice – you gamble or you miss out.”

I thought it was obvious that not buying the boxes is an option, but that means you cannot get the glider. Or the Mini Mushroom Stomper (which only comes from Wardrobe unlocks, which only come from black lion chests) or any other exclusive, untradable items they introduce in future.

So if me and the other people in this topic are not willing to waste our money gambling but do want the opportunity to buy these items I think its well worth telling Anet that. Otherwise the only info they have is that they’re not selling as many keys as they might expect and they have to draw their own conclusions on why that is. They might decide that there’s not enough exclusive items and add even more of them, which from our perspective would be terrible.

Why do people spend a couple bucks on lotto tickets? You know you have a greater chance of getting struck by lightening twice than you do of winning the lotto. This is sort of Anets version of the lotto, except it costs more and you get less.

I think the game would probably hurt from a financial standpoint if the keys were removed. It would mean having to be more obnoxious in other ways. At least the keys are a choice and not everyone buys them.

Actually I finally have a reason to buy keys now after a very long time without any reason. The wardrobe unlocks have been really good for me. I have pretty much all the cheap skins that I want, and this is a great way for me to fill in missing items without actually having to pay for them. I’ve gotten a number of pretty cool black lion skins unlocked. I don’t need the staff or sword, I just need the skin.

But yeah I’m not convinced this practice can go away without seriously hamstringing the game at this point.
