Gold Farm
Yes. And no.
The mechanics of the game individually done are legal (pet killing, gold going into pocket). However going afk and setting your char up for the pet to kill repeatedly and gold to go into the pocket is frowned upon, at best. You’re supposed to be playing the game. Not letting it run and collecting loot while you’re not actually on line.
ANet may give it to you.
How did you miss the HUGE threads about this topic?
AFK Farming typically is done in a pretty specific way.
A) Positioning the character in a place where it is beneficial (where mobs spawn and you get loot)
B) Set a skill on autocast (for rangers it often is the heal spell, for necros it is an attack spell I don’t know anything about)
C) Go afk (this is verified by you not replying to a GM who tries to contact you)
If these three points apply, you are acting against the rules and it will result in action against the account if you are reported and caught by a GM. Please note that no third-party software (“bot”) is needed for action against your account! The combination of points A, B and C without any third-party software is enough to get you suspended.

Same for people posting only to tell others not to post (“deal with it”-posts)
Oh yeah, this is a topic discussion that’s been done to death. Thanks Shikigami for providing the summary that the GMs have come up with.
If you’d like to see this for yourself, hybrideq, here’s the thread on that:

While it may be unsavory behavior, there’s nothing technically wrong with pet-kill farming. Perhaps that person may be playing the odds on the trading post or involved in chat. But if a GM tries to contact them and they don’t respond? Well, it’s “uh oh spaghetti-o’s” then.

TL;DR: If you’re AFK; your avatar should be idle.
I’ll further clarify.
You are in no way allowed to use a third party program or script to accomplish this part: “your pets are doing the killing and your mastery is doing the looting”.
If a GM moves you or speaks to you and you don’t respond – then you are partaking in unattended gameplay and may have your account warned/suspended/terminated (depends on how many violations the account had previously). Pet Kills & Macro Looting Excepted
Game Security GMs are trained to remove afk players that are interacting with the game, environment, or other players from the game. Pet Kills & Macro Looting Excepted
Game Support GMs are trained to handle such appeals while being acutely aware of why/how Game Security is handling accounts. Pet Kills & Macro Looting Excepted
Pets doing the killing and mastery autoloot kicking in without you interacting is perfectly fine.
I’ll pitch in on this thread, as there seems to be some confusion about this situation.
The auto-cast feature was never intended to be used as an AFK farming mechanism, and usage of the auto-cast feature while AFK is fine as long as it is not used to facilitate unattended gameplay.
Mastery auto-loot also stopping players from being flagged afk seems like a bug instead of a feature, and I’ll be sure to bring it up today while we have a chat about this internally.
1) Using skill (1 or more) while AFK
2) AFKing in a place where it is beneficial for your character to be at
3) Unresponsive to interaction with GMsIf all 3 of these apply to what you are doing, you may get actioned for it.
If you set a skill, such as healing, to auto cast, park your character at a location to farm enemies, and not respond when a GM shows up, you can get in trouble for it.

This one by a dev is rather long.
-snip-
The 3 rules above aren’t just for your protection, they are for everyone’s protection. GMs have been trained to identify and handle these situations, it’s one of the first things they learn. GMs are overly generous on the amount of time that players are given to respond.
-snip-
(Automation is still against the rules, unless you are using it to play music in-game)
The bottom line is that AFK farming is against the rules because it counts as unattended gameplay. The game mechanics involved are working as intended and they’re not going to take them away. But when you use the mechanics to automatically farm enemies for long periods of time, you might get actioned for it.
