Gold Spammers And RMT's
Well I’m afraid you should get used to it. If removing them was easy, they would have been removed. Would be cool if someone with experience in this field could explain the complexities of the process to everybody.
@Amigo
The sad thing is you never get used to it!
I put up with it for five years in FFXI and seven years in WoW, one of the best things about Guild Wars was the non exsistance of RMT’s. Blizzard seems to have taken care of majority of the problem in the latest incarnations of WoW (it’s not even a quarter as bad as it used to be) and this is a problem i would love to see Anet also address, not only does it kill immersion it also kills the economy!
RMT’s and gold spammers are the bane of the modern MMO, the mechanic that allows them in should never have been there in the first place!
The thing is it is based on account hacking and credit card stealing. These two can never be removed completely. You should also take into account Anet stance on cost effective MMO. They probably cannot have extensive staff numbers to deal with this issue.
@Amigo
Well exactly!
The problem lies in the fact that the mechanic allowing these creatures into the game should not have been there from the onset, Anet knew that without a subscription model they could get away with a lacklustre support base…this is wrong!
The game actively supports the RMT with the inclusion of an online store, from the very start restrictions should have been in place on new account creation and chat and mail options (yes it’s draconic but it keeps the scum out) these restriction are then lifted after a certain amount of gameplay and trust is built.
Sitting back and “getting used to it” is not an option imo, if enough people get on the case then Anet will have to listen!
Turning off map chat helps but when i start recieving ingame mail…that’s when i start having “kittens” :P

I’ve never seen as much gold spam or mail in WoW as I’ve seen here, and that is very surprising. I’m hoping that it’s just an early game blip. Anet needs to aggressively pursue the advertised web site owners in court, if that’s even possible due to the international nature of their business.

RMTs are a very hard thing to deal with and Anet doesn’t have near the budget Blizzard has. Before you tell them to fix it I ask you to tell us how you would go about fixing it without ruining certain aspects of the game.
I want to see them gone just as much as the next guy. The best way we can help is by not paying for the services that these RMTs offer, be wary of phishing, and take security measures on our email accounts(change your password often, check the URLs on all emails before you go to them). One of the best ways to get rid of these guys is to make sure they can’t make any money or get hold of accounts. Those that are actually selling gold and not scamming you are getting most of that gold from hacked accounts.
@holotype
Indeed!
But sadly hunting down these wretches legally costs more in the long run than just installing an ingame barrier.
@ickytwerp
Well you you have kind of answered your own question there, yes Anet are the poor man compared to Blizz and that’s exactly why a mechanic to stop the RMT should have been in place from the start.
For a possible solution see my third post, though not perfect by any means it did work for LOTRO if i remember rightly.
