We are introducing a change to gold transfers as part of an effort to address fraud and account theft. Beginning on March 31, 2015, there will be a limit on how much gold a single player can receive through in-game mail and/or the Guild Vault each week. This limit, which is based on historical data, should not affect the normal transfer of gold between players. It is designed to prevent rapid and abusive transfers of gold that may be part of account takeovers, fraud, and RMT (gold selling).

Full details about the system:

  1. Each account will have a limit on how much gold can be moved from its mail in-box and Guild Vault into its wallet each week.
  2. If you receive more gold through in-game mail than you can accept in a week, the gold will remain attached to the mail in your in-box and can be retrieved up to the limit the following week or in subsequent weeks.
  3. For the purposes of this limit, a week begins at 12:01 AM UTC each Sunday (5:01 PM PDT/4:01 PM PST Saturday).
  4. Gold received from the Trading Post is not subject to this limit.
  5. The maximum amount of gold that can be sent via a single in-game mail will be 500 gold.
  6. The maximum total amount of gold that an individual player account can accept in a week will be 500 gold.
  7. We will monitor this system and may make changes to the limits if we find that changes are necessary.

I think this needs to be extensively tested.

I will now be accepting emails with 500G attached. After receiving them, I’ll confirm the receipt and then you can attempt to send me another 500G. If I’m unable to retrieve it, I’ll inform you.

Hey, we all need to pitch in to keep the game safe and bug-free, right?

How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Does this mean we can get some form of gold storage back for our personal banks then? We were told a long time ago when gold storage in personal banks was removed that we should use guild banks to store our gold if we wanted a way to do that. With limits, it means that storing copious amounts of gold is no longer an option.

I would love some clarification on this. Thanks, Gaile.

I can’t really see any reason to have to store “copious” amounts of gold. The wallet is account bound and has no limit. Drop it into a guild bank and you run the risk of a jilted guildie stealing it (although permissions can and do prevent such things). But if you are using a personal storage guild with no other members, than you don’t have much to worry about either way.

Also if you are concerned about being hacked, and all your gold taken if it was just all in the account wallet, what is stopping the thief from accessing your guild bank and removing all the funds? But then if you have been hacked, you probably have more pressing things to worry about than your GW2 account…

You can store as much gold as you want in your wallet. Storing gold in a personal guild vault is a meaningless exercise (and super dangerous since you could accidentally leave your personal guild and lose all of your gold forever).

While I am sure this will be very good to prevent gold selling and the like, I also think it would be bad for those who like to trade through mail to avoid TP fees. Personally I only use the TP and I know mail trading is not recommended, but some people do trade valuable items such as precursors through mail which will prove impossible after these changes and mail trading precursors is beneficial for both sides provided they both give what they agree to. Again this will only be a positive for me though, so I am definitely not complaining about this!

So I presume that once this system is deployed, if an account is banned for being hacked, the mails in its inbox containing 500g increments will be returned to sender so the hacked players get their gold back? If not, then this really doesn’t help the hacked player at all, it just keeps the gold seller from getting the money (in itself valuable, but insufficient overall).

Also, what does this do for gold laundering? Can I send 7 precursors through the mail to circumvent the 500g limit?

I, too, am also worried about the guild vault change. I store 3000g in an assortment of guilds right now so that I don’t have the funds on-hand and thus can’t accidentally purchase very expensive items on the TP. Will I be prevented from withdrawing my gold once this change goes live, or be limited to only 500g withdrawn a week? Having access to my own gold is very important, and it’s also very important to have a place to store it outside of the wallet.

I’m sure the CS Team can see where mail is sent. No need for the players to access that information purely for ‘hacked’ accounts. It’s not like they can’t see it, just because you can’t.

It might be a nice QoL feature, for some other purposes…but nothing we, as players, need for security or Account Restorations.

A second or third GW2 account is not uncommon especially after the sales, not sure this will make a bump in player to player transactions.

I think part of the reason is to prevent people from doing mail trades. It’s not recommended, and strongly discouraged. It helps people from getting scammed, and stops people from scamming if they can only recieve 500g a week. Of course if players insist on circumventing the TP fees, and they are legit, it would just take a couple of weeks to get their money and/or items. Which makes it very inconvenient. Which is kind of the point…

ANet just annoyed a lot of gold traders. If they have to take the time to convert gold to items from the trading post then pick them up and then email those items (and get blocked as an email spammer after a few sends) then that significantly slows them down and adds a cost to their business.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

i dont like this.

for example, a month ago a friend of mine found the colossus, and i bought it from her for 600g through mail (price at the time was like 550g buy / 650g sell or something). under this system, she would have to collect over a week’s span. while my item is instantaneous. the system as you state it will be abusable. youre only going to force a currency switch. the gold sellers will buy an item worth X and send it and the listing fee to the buyer, entirely dodging your fix, because a 500g listing fee means an item worth 10kg, and no item currently has such a large value, and i highly doubt any single person buys that much gold because at that point there isnt a goal to meet. and why would they care about tp fees when the gold is most likely stolen in the first place?

cant you lean on ISPs to shut down and block traffic to gold selling sites instead?

I sold a precursor for 900g months ago to a friend. Since he’s a friend i knew he wouldnt scam me. It was done in a couple of minutes and it was perfect because it was totally intuitive. On top of that, I did get 100g more than if I would use the TP to sell it and he did get the precursor for 50g less than if he used the TP to buy that (that’s how much the fee takes).
So… what happens if I get another precursor, now I can’t trade with my friend just because someone else is stealing gold?

Another question: If the reset for week is xx:00, would be possible to send 500g at xx:59 and then send another 500g at xx:01 after the reset?

The only times I have ever mailed large sums of gold were to my second account and to my girlfriend’s account. The only time I have received large sums of gold was the return of money from my girlfriend’s account. I don’t understand the need for the limit or how it helps honest players. I can understand that if this were working in reverse and you were limiting the amount than an account could send, as opposed to the amount that could be received, it might help ding gold sellers.

This change looks as if there is a way to somehow dupe gold. If this has happened, or is happening, I would hope A-Net would let us know that.

I dislike the change and the limits.

I sincerely hope that Arenanet also has someone that, at the least, occasionally goes through and actually buys gold from these sellers in order to get a handle on what new methods they are using to circumvent the myriad of protocols that are already in place.
While I would never engage in it myself, I know people outside of GW2 that have in other games, and it shocked me the lengths the sellers go to in order to get around the usual checks and balances.

ANet will not change the system to make player to player trades easier. They do not support nor condone player to player trades.

Through the trading post means that someone else has to buy their item or items first. Slows down the process. They know this won’t stop the accounts, but it will slow them down. Anything that slows them down slows down the harm they cause to the game’s economy.

Xdmatt — this is great, what a fine community spirit you’re showi… wait a minute, I see what you did there!

Iason — I am not sure about the answer to this. As pdavis and mtpelion point out, the wallet is account bound and does not have a limit. So I’m curious why you feel a second storage option is needed.

steve and others — I will ask about the functionality of a “sent items” system. However, off the top of my head I suspect that implementing such functionality would not be a trivial or easy process, and I can see it would involve several teams (programming, UI, art, etc.). As Ic points out, it may be seen as more a QoL factor than an essential system change. But again, I’ll see what I can find out or a dev may post here to answer this question.

suffish — I have not heard that there’s a motivation factor involving preventing player-to-player trading. As the statement says, this is about curbing fraud, RMT, and the oft-related account thefts.

Rising Dusk — another question I’ll need to ask. But when accounts are proven to have been hacked, the account is restored (rolled back) so would that not accomplish the same thing that you’re proposing? And wouldn’t doing what you propose make restorations a moot factor?

hrasna — you’ve hit a very important point here: This change will impact very, very few players. In fact, in previous statistical reviews, the percentage of players who would be impacted would be in the low single digits.

I wouldn’t think it would be a problem for friends, as they could just send you the money in 2 “payments”, one each week. If you already trust them enough to sell them a precursor in such a way, trusting them to make multiple payments shouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

I mean, sure, you have to wait two weeks to get all the gold, but I kind of doubt you’re so in need of 500 gold that you absolutely NEED it immediately.

The problem comes when that is only an specific trade, and you have the entire week to do more trades.

Actually, this might affect me even more than I though earlier. You can check my in-game historial right now to find an interesting log. Since i got more than 1000Gold and a really friendly guild (we know each other on real life), I usually give money to my guildies when they need it (as example to buy the black wings) and they return it to me on the next weeks.
In the past months I gifted 1250g for a precursor to a friend that I met on real life 1 month ago. Then later I gave 750g to another friend for a different precursor, 510g to a different one, 100g to another one, 100g to another one and 60g to another one. At this moment, all of them did return my money back (except 95g) and they did get their shiny item when they didn’t had enough money for it.

It was totally ok for me. If a close friend ask me for 700g to return it in 1 month, I would give the money to him without doubt, but now I won’t be able.

You see my point, right? I’m not selling gold, but this new “rule” will annoy the hell out of me. (Trying to give some criticism feedback).

Hence why I am asking about our personal banks getting back the ability for us to store gold. It was a feature we had, that we lost and ArenaNet staff told us to use a personal guild bank. All I am asking for is clarification on whether or not they have the intention to add personal gold storage back to our personal banks.

But the question is why do we need that? We already can store gold, it’s just that it happens automatically and it can be accessed from anywhere and on any character.

Some people liked it for role play reasons. Each char had its own gold and bought its own purchases through gold earned by its own actions. They could also have poor chars and rich chars with story lines about their rich noble char or their poor working class char.

The personal gold bank is nice -
1) it helps stop you spend all your money at once by making stupid trading post mistakes.
2) it is good for videos as people don’t see you have 100g (insert any amount here) and want to become jealous – good to hide how much real wealth you actually have when you open that inventory.

I don’t want that much gold on any of my characters. If I had my druthers and if security was really a priority, then we would get a password protected bank as well. That way, people could store gold in their bank and if their account got hacked, the hacker would need to hack a password that would have to have a mandatory different password than the account password.

Also the guild bank changes are terrible for those of us with more than 1 account. It’s bad enough that for the first month of having a second account, I have to take gold out in like 5g increments. I appreciate the protection, but clamping down on this stuff and taking away QoL options for storing gold isn’t that great. Heck, we had gold storage in GW1 as well as this game and you removed it. I disagree strongly with the choice to do so.

To be fair, why did you guys put gold storage in the game in the first place and then remove it? That is the question you should be asking. I am just asking for something back that should be in the game again. It gives you a place to put gold you don’t want to be tempted to buy stuff with on impulse. Then again, maybe that is why you removed the ability to store it.

People who use a guild bank to store money “out of sight” to help saving, should know that Anet cannot rollback guild banks if your account is hacked and someone cleans it out. I believe that is part of the reason for this change, since it means you will lose no more than 500g from your guild bank should it occur (though I dream of having 500g to begin with to spend, never mind save).

If you want a safe, secure way to store gold so you don’t see it tempting you at all times, set up a buy order for something like a pecursor, A Mystic Forge Conduit, a BL ticket skin, the Permanent hairstyle kit, or some other stupidly expensive thing that will never be filled; AFAIK buyers pay no taxes on TP trades, just the sellers, so you won’t be spending any money storing your cash out of sight in a order that will never be filled.

  • I doubt very much if ANet staff told us to use a personal guild bank. My memory is that they said (in response to a question) that it was permitted.
  • Some people like to store gold outside the wallet to reduce their spending, using the out-of-sight/out-of-mind technique.
    • The new system allows this, at a limit of 500g/week.
    • An alternative is to put in TP buy offers that are too low to get fulfilled. For example, offer 1,000 gold for Eternity, or 4 gold for 250 Superior Runes of Holding. Cancel the offers when you want the gold (no limits from the TP).

So much for guild raffles……

This is a bad idea that isn’t going to cause more grief than its going to help.

So, I presume this won’t really slow down gold sellers. Instead of mailing the total amount, they’ll be advertising “depositing gold into your guild bank” (which is also applicable to “private selling of items” – invite person into personal guild, have them deposit total amount, remove them from guild) . As people can deposit immediately but not withdraw, the limit can be bypassed. Or heck, they’ll start selling pre-stocked guild. “Buy a guild bank with 1000000 gold for low low price now” .

Then just don’t spend that gold. If you’re going to spend it, you’re going to spend it. There’s nothing they can do to stop you.

This is a more understandable reason to me, but ultimately you still have the gold whether you can see it or not.

If i had a place to put 20 gold aside, i wouldnt spend it. thats my point. It wouldnt ever be spent, its a reserve that i dont touch. But with the new system, when buying armor and weapons its very easy to get below that 20g reserve now, by accident.

And no, each character had that gold. The account didnt have that gold, each character did, the “Golden” title? you had to have 200g on one character.

Plus, the code is still probably in the game files, if it is i dont see what the problem is in turning it back on. It doesnt affect you? but it would be there for those who wanted it

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

Umm if someone is asking for 700g to be returned in 1 month then under this new system it still works. Since the cap is 500g/week, they will just have to wait 2 weeks to receive the 700g, thereby satisfying the within 1 month requirement.

Also re-read point 5: The maximum amount of gold that can be sent via a single in-game mail will be 500 gold.

They don’t say any limits on how much gold a person can send, just how much per ONE in-game mail. Thus this should not prevent you or anyone else from sending various amounts of gold to others.

Iason — I am not sure about the answer to this. As pdavis and mtpelion point out, the wallet is account bound and does not have a limit. So I’m curious why you feel a second storage option is needed.

I don’t want to speak for others, but I’m pesonally something of a fan of not being able to blow all of my hard earned cash on shinies just because it’s sitting in my wallet. Personally I’m not rich enough for this particular cap to affect me, but others richer than myself might have similar concerns/fears.

Out of sight, out of mind. That is pretty much the concept behind wanting an account bank in addition to the wallet. It also prevents accidental purchases, impulse buying, and accidental email transfers. I’ll give an example, my best tip in game was 50 gold. Yes, that’s 50 gold! All for just rezzing someone in WvW. And hour later, I received an email asking me to please understand it was only supposed to be 50 silver. I sent him back 49.45 gold back. I charged him a 5 silver transaction fee for fun

I don’t know if 500g would interfere with it but, as a WvW server we have raffles that one or two players handle. That cap may make that difficult to do. Though I don’t believe we’ve ever hit that much per raffle.

Dear ANet, you do realize that Gold Sellers will now pick a highly liquid asset that represents approximate gold value (i.e. Globs of Ectoplasm) and use that instead, right? Of course, they’ll continue to use +500g immediate sales as well.

I’ve seen similar measures done by other MMOs and guess what happens? Alternate items are used instead and it’s a very vicious cycle.

Limiting gold transfer rates does not work. Monitoring and then quickly freezing/holding suspicious activity like a credit card company does work (quick release logic, is the send on the receivers friend list/in his or her guild/did they actually send a reply or to message, were they recently in a party, etc.). The KEY to gold sellers is quick delivery. If the gold sellers can’t guarantee a 48-hour or less turnaround, they go out of business as word gets around.

This is bad bad bad. Stop before you reinvent the economy for players. At best you killed a portion of the Gold Sellers gold assets (which they stole) from the 15% gold lost from Trading Post fees. BUT that all that doesn’t stop the hacking and only effectively increases the outside sale price of gold by 15%. At worst, you just upended the trading post economy and lots more legit playing and core players will lose out on the new screwed up economy.

Thanks for the Glob of Ectoplasm rise … doh ><

You HAVE GOT to be kidding me. I’m a guild leader that runs a variety of events and I maintain a position as guild treasurer. There can be weeks where I receive ALOT MORE than 500g in mail.

I find this change not beneficial to people like me and very much oppose the way that this system is going to operate. Our Legendary weapon raffles alone are now going to be super frustrating.

I can’t remember a change this inconvenient ever since you put in that confirmation box for speeding up guild upgrades. We really enjoy the 40+ confirmation boxes we have to click every day for 24/7 guild buffs!

Ignoring the hyperbole, this is the first (and only) post I’ve seen to raise an issue that cannot readily be resolved by the proposed system. Huge guilds often run lottos or collect for WvW siege or otherwise run into situations in which 500g/week is too low of a limit.

I’d like to propose that guild be allowed an influence+commendation upgrade to increase the cap.

  • This would give large guilds something on which to spend their excess currency.
  • RMTs etc wouldn’t be able to use this, unless they hacked the accounts of guild leaders (and should that happen, there would be all sorts of other problems making the gold transfer seem unimportant).

hrasna — you’ve hit a very important point here: This change will impact very, very few players. In fact, in previous statistical reviews, the percentage of players who would be impacted would be in the low single digits.

I would be curious to know the ratio of gold sellers to people trading withing guilds(or friends)/Community raffles etc to know what the majority of those affected are. Seems like a poor change decision if the majority are people trading among themselves or holding raffles/guild/community events. Although I’m sure that’s been discussed at length with this change. I’m just curious as to the data behind the decision.

Sounds like a good idea. 500g its a lot of gold, plus i doubt that any one would give away so much stuff in such a short time.
