They can also find account names by checking the leaderboards (https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/achievements) which have every account name that the game has and the last day they played, showing current active players. They can also check the forums for accounts who post, and are therefore interested in the game.
Avoiding one area won’t stop them from reaching you.

Indeed, and what’s most troubling is that these accounts have AP anywhere from 200-800+ which means they are probably stolen accounts. It might be time for Anet to put out another PSA for newer players.

I got gold spammed from heart of mists and I’m not even registered on the leaderboards for top 1000, so they more than likely just whisper people in proximity.
