really?
how come gold is so cheap now compared to before ? all of a sudden went from 100gem for 1.20 gold to a big spike at 1.60 gold.

without any major patche or reason for people to suddenly have more gold, i feel like the only possibility is that the game/company is controlling the rate and not really the players.

its really a themepark and we are being toyed with by finance people a lot more than we first thought.

probably.

ok, no go buy some gold pieces. even if you can far gold, its really really better to pay 2-3 dollars for that big pouch of gold that would take you countless of hours of farming to get.

really, the future of games f2p etc, scares me.
i know its normal they have to make money, but it kin of remove some magic from the game i think.

The sale over the last few days is what is causing this.

Tried to look on the front page of the gemstore? There is a sale now. Yesterday we had minis and character slots on sale, today armor skins. People buy gems with their gold and that’s the only reason the amount of gold you can get with 100 gems went up. No one is controlling any rate.

Also, dude, spell checking!

The 3 day new years sale is why.

25%-35% off on some of the cosmetic items.

Once this sale is over the gem prices will go back to what they were.

true i should have spellchecked.

but aside from that; if gems price is higher then a “sale” doesnt seem like a “sell”.

so to buy gem with gold at a much higher price will probably be less cost effective than buying the items at regular price.

whatever, buy gems with real cash, this value never changes

just supply and demand doing what it does.

i think to some extent Anet tries to regulate the exchange some so it doesnt get too out of control, but thats just from some cursory observation on http://www.guildwarstrade.com/

it usually stays within the $1=approx. 1 gold range.

thugged out since cubscouts

real cash for gold, that value changes.

reals cash for gem, and then buy items with gems, that value remains the same no matter what.

ANet manipulates this exchange rate via the sale. Sure it’s 30% of some items, however, when you calcualte the exchange rate before and after it really only gives, perhaps, 5% off – while ANet racks in more money from the increase in exchane numbers.

It’s another statistical sales gimmick. The buyer is always meant to lose while the seller is meant to make the profit. The only difference is what the margin is – and this sale just increases it.

Not taking the missuse of the word ‘gimmick’ into account, this is still wrong. The buyer isn’t meant to lose in any other way than that the buyer is meant to buy. Yes, if you now would decide to buy gems with gold and trade those gems for the items on sale then they wouldn’t be much cheaper but there are also people who either buy gems with cash as well as people who have seen the trends of gem prices and that they always go up for a bit during sales and special events. The only person who lose is the one who goes for gold→gems now if the exchange rate would put the pric higher than it normally is. People who have gems from before and people who buy gems with cash win since they can buy the items on sale cheaper or sell off some gems for a higher than normal price.

When you go to the grocery store and buy food, do you believe the store is somehow taking advantage of you?

And how many players do you think will have gems saved up for this, while how many will convert during the sale period? It is a sales gimmick (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gimmick). Like you said, only those who have bought gems for lower price won’t lose out on this. The focus is to get more peopel to convert gold to gems and not for players to spend their gems – why else would the exchange price go up?

When you go to the grocery store and buy food, do you believe the store is somehow taking advantage of you?

Hell yeah. Always offering great speacials. The one that has been there for a long time is having milk on side of the store and bread on the other – makes you walk throughout the store and see all those specials.

The point of selling an item is to make money and a company is willing to do pretty much anything to make as much profit as possible when they smell high number of potential customers.

The one that makes me lol is ANet’s special on the game – get the digital deluxe upgrade free. Twice now it was meant to end and it keeps getting extended lol.

Actually i know they do. The prices are 100%+ markup raised…

To give an example if i want to buy say tomatoes i have to pay $9-$13 a kg (why?) at a shopping center, if i drive one and half hours to a farmer shed/shop near me they are 99c a kg…the markup is insane…

Sadly with online purchases we do not get these choices…so companies like Anet can charge whatever markup they desire to a point..

wait a week after the sale (holiday events just ended, it kept the gem price high and now there’s a sale to do that) and you’ll see a drop in gem price again. They also drop sharply at night time.

@ Death Reincarnated:

ArenaNet doesn’t make any profit from people converting gold to gems during these sales except perhaps indirectly (if rising exchange rates prompts more people to buy gems to convert to gold). Their profits from these sales come from players who buy gems with real money, and that exchange rate hasn’t changed.

Problem is that some people are getting richer with gold and those people don’t mind spending it on gems regardless of the price. This causes the price to continue to go up while those of us who don’t farm like crazy (not saying farming itself is bad) are left behind and have to break the bank to get gems.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
