Gold worthless in "endgame"
Someone said GW2 is becoming a “Pay to win” game, and their argument is that on PvE, you win by getting flashy skins. Since ANet is releasing new skins on TP, you must save gold to convert to gems (unless you wanna spend $$$) to buy those “winning” skins.
Therefore, gold = winning.
:)
The problem is that there is a certain amount of gold one can have that is enough for most things, but not enough for the top cost items.
I find that whenever I have around 100 gold, I know I can buy pretty much any gemstore or blacklion item, but legendaries and such are so far away in cost that there isn’t a point in saving towards them. Essentially, its like gold ceases to be a currency when it comes to super costly stuff.
Its a real issue that there is no mid range to it. One is either dirt poor or super rich and its very clear in our minds that one doesn’t go from one category to the other without luck taking a big hand in it.
This is kind of funny considering there was another topic on here earlier about how the entire of PvE basically comes down to farming gold because everything requires it.
I guess it depends on what you’re interests are within the game. I’ve been level 80 8 months now and I rarely have much gold. Partially that’s because I never farm and I’m levelling 4 alts, but it’s also because I collect minis so any available gold I do have goes on buying them.
But on the other hand I rarely buy gems, either with gold or real money, because there’s little in the gem store that interests me (other than minis). Most of the skins I like for example come from dungeons.
But if you’re enjoying playing the game I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s like all the people who do the dailies without even trying and then don’t know what to get with all their laurels. As long as you’re not going out of your way to get gold you then don’t have a use for it’s not a problem.
And in answer to your question about what the people selling legendaries do with the gold, firstly it’s only Eternity that’s ever come close to costing 4,000 gold, most of them are under 3,000. Secondly making a legendary is incredibly expensive so most of the money will go on that, especially if they had to buy the precursor. The actual profit margin is relatively small.

Gold may be "easy " to come by but, it certainly isn’t plentiful enough to cover all my alts and desires. I do not have a single legendary, nor ever had a precursor drop, or even a really great dye. The best drop has been one I just received yesterday, it was white dye. That’s after 4k hours of play!
So I’m stuck just trying to keep up with the cost of virtual living with a family of 11 alts to feed and cloth
I got 2 legends, 600g and i dont know on what i should spend money.. Gold seems a bit useless to me in current state, its might change with ascended armors+new leg items tho.
I propose a very simple solution to both sides of the problem: Everyone who thinks they have too much gold and nothing to spend it on should send their spare gold to someone in this thread who said they don’t have enough.
Then everyone is happy.
(Disclaimer: This is not a serious suggestion, unless you want to send it to me of course.)

I am like you I have been playing since the betas and I have 4 80’s and 3 more on the way.
I have never had more than 30 gold at a time yet I have been able to gear my characters the way I like -just yesterday I had a white dye drop too and today I had an exo drop that I could sell for 9g- which was great because I just dropped 35 g on gearing a new 80 and only had 10 g to my name
.
I would love more gold- but I don’t farm, don’t do dungeons- so I am stuck with earning money as I play.
It is fine for me mostly- but now I am obsessed with getting Eye of Rotgort for my necro (the new 80) and I am 490 t6 bloods short -.-

omg same..except mine is like in excess of like 800g now. Wasted like 520g on name change, skins, etc. but I can be very frugal when I maek up my mind. Probly gonna gear up my ele with that and then pool it towards a legendary..probly dagger/staff whatever. I use to farm CoF b4 the nerf it was actually easier to make gold, now I just run daily dungs but you can hop on the champ train in FGS like most of my freinds r doin atm..

chronometria summed up my GW2 financial situation perfectly. I think I had 150g at most… spent most of it on chest keys. I’ve got everything I want except a Legendary, and those cost too much to be a realistic goal, so I just dump my money into random stuff.
The thing I’ve been finding myself thinking about alot lately is this: it will never be more efficient for me to farm in game vs. dropping 20 or 30 bucks of real life money on gems… and I think the game is designed that way on purpose. They’d rather us drop the 20 bucks than farm for a month for the same amount of gold, so they aren’t going to allow farming methods to become too lucrative.
You can see this in the way they control farming methods. So many of the most efficient farms have been nerfed before the majority of people find them, and when they introduce a living story farming method like the Scarlett events, EVERYBODY goes to them and the inflation evens out people’s individual profits, so you can’t really “get ahead”.
So I guess the question becomes, how do you get ahead of the inflation? Or rather, is it worth it to try if a Legendary is the only thing you can’t really afford? It’s an odd conundrum.

Dont give up Legendaries are top-tier for a reason, if everyone had access to them within a week or so of inputting only an hour so each day then everyone be would runnin around with them. At first it was frustrating for me as well, pooling my gold towards my 1st legendary. It ended up costing 1450g in mats which included buying out the precursor from the TP, I was only able to meet this sum after a solid 3-4 months of farming CoF (back in the day). It was generally easier as I was able to easily make 15-25g/day to meet my goal. Nowadays it is a little harder to meet this goal but the FGS champ train is probably comparable (until anet decides to nerf it). I havent spent a single dollar on gems to gold yet, dont let people fool you into thinking everyone who has legendaries got theirs this way.

I think Tagus summed it up very well. The developers don’t want you to be able to get everything with farming, or the gem shop wouldn’t make enough money. And let’s be honest, they need the gem store dollars since they have no sub fee. Regardless of whether or not you think this game is perfect, they do have employees that have to be paid and servers and equipment that have to be maintained, and that isn’t cheap (yes, I’m sure you all want everything for free for all time, but that’s not how our society works!).
I also agree with chrono in that I believe there are few “middle class” or “upper middle class” citizens in GW2.
However, it all depends on how you play. I think you should do the things you enjoy because this is your GAME, your free time, your “happy place”. In the end it doesn’t matter what everyone else has compared to you as long as you’re having fun.
There are lots of ways to spend gold, or lots to spend gold on, but personally I finally decided to start working toward a legendary, since that’s the only thing left that I don’t have. I’m not expecting to get it overnight. I’ll farm for a few months. But still, it gives me something to save up my gold for (precursor) since I don’t NEED anything else, and I enjoy the farming. Just today I was going through Cursed Shore to gather some mats and ended up finding 3 chests and even getting my Orr Explorer achievement, which I wasn’t even trying for But most importantly I was having fun because that’s what I felt like doing.
I’m still saving gold for fused shrotbow for my theif. So i guess im not at that point yet. but i’m sure ill figure out something to spend it on. If you dont have every profession yet you can always make alts and spend money on them :p
I’ve got four legendaries, almost every mini (3 jack a lops, Karka) , a few hundred gold, and a loaded materials page.
I still love getting loot, but nothing drives me enough to want to grind for gold. I have bought 3 of the armor skins on the TP for individual pieces that fit within my overall look for each of my 9 level 80’s)
Now, I am doing
A) world completion on all my toons (just finished third) and the enjoyment of continuously discovering new content in areas I’m revisiting, and
B) achievement points and living story completion
(Except for fractals..)
Btw, I didn’t play gold wars to reach my current level,.
Play wvw, you’ll run out of gold soon enough.

Having a lot of gold does not make you better than other players in any aspect of the game other than looking cool and showing off your epic shinies in LA. Working as intended. Job well done.

Hahah, same here, a gold farm+fun at same time
There is lot’s you can buy with Gold.
- Legendary items cost anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 gold.
- Mystic Forge skins cost 200-300 Gold.
- Leveling a crafting discipline to 500 (to craft ascended weapons) costs 200+ Gold in crafting materials.
- T3 Cultural armor costs 120 Gold.
- Each L80 character costs 60+ Gold for Exotic gear.
Plus, you can convert Gold to Gems to buy useful things like Bank Space, Bag Slots, and Additional Character Slots for your account. Not to mention the “useless” things you can buy like cosmetics and quality-of-life items.
But now I find myself with tons of gems and gold that I will not use. And I’m not even close to endgame
Are you sure you’re not even close to end-game? Your post history implies you have at least two L80 Characters, and a lot of game experience…
When i finished my story with my ranger, there was “Fear not this night” with voice in the ending of the story (the quest in fort trinity celebrating the death of the dragon).
Now 4-5 months after, I finished it with my mesmer, and there is no music at all. Just some credit text scrolling in my screen (which I can’t actually remember).

I constantly change my build so I’m always buying gear.

I wasted 1.5k gold in 3 months (750g I got selling a precursor and 750g I made playing pretty much all aspects of the game).
Now, for some reason, I can’t even get 100g I need so don’t tell me gold is worthless.
There is always something to do with your gold and if your gold is worthless, well, if you enjoy the game just ignore it. If you don’t want every single legendary or any other expensive thing and you have everything you want, I don’t see why you should be bothered with the usefulness of gold.

I have 6 characters and the more I have, the easier and cheaper it is to gear them at 80. Can I ask what you do with all those characters? Why don’t they have enough gold, dungeon tokens, karma or WvW badges to gear them at 80? Personally, between Karma and WvW badges, I’m pretty sure I’m set to gear up at least a few more characters…leaving my golds only purpose to buy skins I like for that gear.
If you say gold is useless then I guess no need for Anet to release precursor scavenger hunt that many players are waiting for dont you think?
A legendary? 4.000 gold for a skin? Are we nuts? All the time that needs to be put it’s not worth for a skin from my point of view. And then I’m thinking… and what will the player that’s selling this 4.000 gold legendary do with all that gold?
Do you think that gw2 should put some kind of “usefullness” on gold in endgame?[/quote]
Legendaries aren’t just skins anymore since you can select stats you want according to your build.
I’m not paying 4,000g for the legendary. I’m paying 600g for the precursor and playing the game while getting the rest of the mats. I don’t plan on selling it, but using it because I like the look of it. I would indeed not know what to do with 4,000g … if I wasn’t going to buy a legendary with it!
Play wvw, you’ll run out of gold soon enough.
wvw is where I farm my gold…
You’re obviously from a high tier, loaded server or good at PvP. I do not make money in WvW. I’m lucky to break even. Admittedly I’m not a PvPer, so I probably tend to die more than some. I do have fun though, so it’s worth every epic (or sad) death!
It all comes down the usual issue: As soon as you have enough to cover your expenses comfortably, the currency loses meaning.
Some people will find meaning in chasing luxuries like Legendaries. Others might find their amusement in playing the market.
Once, I played a game called Perfect World International. The game is notorious for selling the best gear you can get in the cash shop for ridiculous prices. Heck, they have extremely frequent sales, which cause fluctuations in the prices of every day items. I turned to merchanting instead of farming for making my ends meet. After not so long, I had enough that no matter what they sold in the cash shop, I would never be at a risk of being “poor” again. I had so much funds that normal f2p players were convinced I wasn’t 100% f2p. Similarly, what I was making by merchanting was far more than I could make with reasonable amounts of farming. And thus, my playing deteriorated into doing dailies and gambling with my funds, all while I kept getting richer and richer.
And that’s why I don’t do the same in GW2.
Gold may be "easy " to come by but, it certainly isn’t plentiful enough to cover all my alts and desires. I do not have a single legendary, nor ever had a precursor drop, or even a really great dye. I play them- what else would I do with them?
They- my 80’s- are all geared- I don’t do dungeons or wvwv because I have a small kid-
I love how all my characters look.
They look exactly like I wanted, I am very happy with them.
I was replying to OP who thinks you don’t need gold- you do if you want stuff like Eye of Rodgort.
I have everything for Lidless Eye and Eye of Rodgort , except for the bloods.
I will get it eventually but it will take a long time since I also don’t farm :P
My point was gold could really have speeded the process up a bit- so it is not like it has no use.
Oh and never mind the Kasmeer Staff skin I would like for my baby Mesmer.. gold has it’s uses.
Oh and the other trans crystal I need to transmute my exco Warhorn to an Ebonhawke skin….
I keep a float of 50g and 2000+gems. Any extra gold goes into gems and any extra gems goes into skins or harvest tools. Since my play-style has 6 lvl 80s covered to exotics I really don’t stress out too much about legendaries since they are not attractive to me.
If gold is useless at end game then why do I keep spending it all? Every time I get to 200 or 300 gold I end up finding some cool things to spend it on and end up with under 50.
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
At one point i saved up about 400g and then the TA weapons appeared on the TP. i now have the sword, GS, mace, hammer and war horn. There went all my gold…and i got them BEFORE they increased in price. Yes, there are always things to spend gold on.
Well if it does not mean anything to you then please share some of that fortune with me :s
A year of playing and I still struggle to get to 10 gold lol

I know this feel so bad… Q.Q
I feel that gold shall never be worthless in this game as it is all to evident what we players are doing with the TP. Seen this morning it was round-about 8g to get 100 gems on a conversion? Uhhh….
I once said last month to someone that I had 500g banked, and how long would it be before 500g is considered chump change?
Sure, at lvl 80, we have nothing really do with it other than buy more and more and more more JUNK but… as I have always said – Money is there to be spent.
Level and gear alts, for different builds, and don’t forget getting them pretty skins.
There you go, all your gold is gone.
I’ve been thinking of something…. once you hit “endgame” [that is, with a full set that you like], farming gold gets so easy…. but worthless. Like… what do you want gold for?
I just want gold so that I can buy gems. Can I have your gold (since you don’t want it)?
I kind of agree. Although I chase those cosmetic skins, therefore not useless to me. If you don’t do that or want it for conversion to gems it kind of is.
Wow. I never thought of someone that just buys gems and holds onto them… I think right now gold is at a premium. And I can’t see how people make so much in a day. I play 2-3 hours on a normal day, sometimes 5 or 6 if Im home all day. I don’t make nearly as much as you guys. Then again, Im trying to play the way I find it to be fun, which may not be as profitable as flipping TP, champ zerging, or whatever else you guys do.
But, I do think gold is the most valuable currency in the game, as it should be.
Question to OP: do you have your ascended weapons?
i was working towards a 3rd legendary but got a weapon chest drop instead. i don’t care how my toon looks as long as the stats are there. nowdays i just spend it on my girlfriends cause i like it when they model new mixes and matches of gear for me.
they’re dudes playing female char btw. so all you players on the way to 80…that’s what gold is going to be to you
