I would just like to really thank you Anet for making this new patch and changing the gem currency exchange. Before I was always tempted to buy gems to convert into gold for some extra funds, but with the latest patch that feeling is totally gone and I can now buy other games that I could find as equally enjoyable if not more than this game, so thank you for taking that temptation of buying gems away.

Edit:I understand they are going to change the gem exchange again to add an opinion for custom amounts. My feelings are still the same.

Glad you have other games, would help if you actually stayed in touch with what has happened. Reality can be so cruel to uninformed posts.

I dont blame him. The time spent attempting to make an overt cashgrab could have been spent working on gold sink content so people wouldnt have so much gold to spend on gems in the first place.

Put “mysterious vendor” in a city, make him travel around for added effect, he sells really expensive skins that would otherwise be in the black lion store for huge amounts of gold.

Pretty sure it isnt all that simple but there would be less people in game with cash to blow on gems, which would probably help settle the “We aren’t getting enough cash” feeling Anet is having.

done.

I think you figured out the thing that might make me leave the game. I knew there could be something, but wasn’t sure what.

So…. No gold sink, no gem gate?

No, we did. OP personally doesnt care though. the motion was enough for him.

I’m just trying to figure out why they’d motion to do something like that without a heads up if it wasn’t to solve an immediate problem dealing with income. I’m pretty sure mountains of tickets about how to use the system by new players doesnt require a complete overhaul, especially since that stuff isnt necessary to play and being presented with an easy option to dump more money into the game after outright buying it might not be the first thing new players do.

I can’t buy that our community is that dumb. If it turns out there was another reason related to gold->gem conversion, gold sinks might assist that.

That being said, Hanlons razor. This situation was just really hard to buy such an explanation for.

There may be a reason for it you haven’t considered. Everyone who uses it, knows how to use it, obviously. But it really wasn’t all that easy to figure out for everyone. Which made less people use it. That is an income reason.

It’s like what they did with the NPE. If you understand stuff, it’s hard to figure out why other people can’t.

It’s like what they did with the NPE. If you understand stuff, it’s hard to figure out why other people can’t.

It’s also super easy to understand why the initial change to it could be perceived as worse for those who purchase gems with gold. “Man, I would really like 5 keys right now for 450 gems. Guess I have to buy 800 gems to purchase 5 keys.”

That to me is far more off-putting than any reason that could be construed as “New player friendly”. New player friendly would be a box for how many gems you want and it telling you the gold it would require. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. If they wanted it to be as user friendly as it could possibly be, that would have been the route to take. If they wanted the gold:gem conversion rate to go up during a holiday then they would do what they did and that is precisely what they did.

Oh sure, I agree. I was against the change too and said so. But you know, businesses are still businesses.

The guy who owned the store I ran always had these “brainstorms” that he was going to make money with. Most of them didn’t make money and quite a few lost us money. Not much I could do about it, because he owned the place. I just ran it.

I sort of think that’s how Anet is. The devs who make the game aren’t the guys who make those decisions and the guys who make those decisions probably are thinking in terms of answering to stock holders, not players.

So they force that through, probably after some debate, most likely against someone or other’s dead body and then the change meets the reaction it did and they reverse it.

You can leave the game and find another, but no matter where you go, you’ll never escape the suits.
