Recently we have had so many bad things with GW2… but what is good in GW2? What are your opinions?

My recent additions when compared to Skyrim:
-Better world graphics; interesting worlds
-Better characters
-Better character animation
-Stats/traits can be defined at will, not by adding skill points during the game

Check Skyrim for its running and jumping animations. Check very new LotR/Mordor game for its very poor running animation. When I see this terrible animations, I start wondering what kind of people are behind them. What is wrong with them. One popular Skyrim running mod makes me wonder if they have ever ran.

(Have played only Tomb Raider: Underworld, Outcast, and 7 hours of Skyrim. Have no other good comparison points. Have not played RPG games because their stat/trait system is too difficult and boring from the start.)

Careful… pointing out good things about the game… rather then endlessly screaming about every single possible mistake in thread after thread (which is just as often more an opinion then anything else…) will likely get you told something along the lines of ‘NOTHING GOOD EVER COMES FROM PRAISING A GAME!’ by the usual crowd of people around here…

Account access for:
- gold
- wardrobe (for both armor and weapon skins)
- crafting resources
- dyes (awesome number of dyes and ways to change colour scheme)
- miniatures

Resource nodes that can’t be stolen by other players while you fight off nearby mobs

Skills on your hotbar that actually change when you swap weapons… seems intuitive, but haven’t seen it done elsewhere

Jumping! (even though I suck at it)

Map discovery with waypoints, PoIs, vistas and skill challenges… and level-appropriate play, so you can continue to enjoy lower-level maps even at end-game

Dry Top.. man, what an amazing map, with sandstorms changing things up, tiered levels for access to merchant goods, fun world bosses, boosted jumps, and very clever geography

Living Story… love how they roll out in small bits that you can unlock as you like, and the impact they have on the main maps…. couldn’t believe what Lion’s Arch looked like when I came back after a few months absence… not many game companies would have the courage to do that to their game

Overall multi-dimensional game play… just seems so much you can do with and for your toons compared to other games I’ve played…. whether exploring, world questing, crafting and resourcing, I guess WvW and PvP (haven’t ventured into that though), living story, fractals, dungeons, jumping, etc. etc.

My main comparison is with Age of Conan which I’ve played since it launched. I find it to be more one-dimensional (raid same places over and over and over), less ability to customize toons both for their gear and their skills, and combat that is less dynamic and more pre-set by whatever combo you select.

More and more, I find myself spending my time in GW2 and not with AoC.

And this post is somehow supposed to be better than such posts, how? I mean, you derailed a thread just to complain about other people.

Besides, I see plenty of praising on these forums, nearly every day a thread pops up praising ArenaNet for what a good job they have done on this game. In fact, I believe that if you fish a little deeper you will find that most complaints against the game are in fact because they keep messing with things that were highly praised.

This game is well loved by the community and always was. If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t be here and instead they would be off playing some other game.

I’m just sayin’.

I’m going to say this just to respond…

I’m pointing out what I see as a universal constant in these forums.
I love this game too. If I see something I truly disagree with, then I’ll say something about it.
But the overall attitude by the majority of those posting their negative thoughts on something more often then not comes of as childish, immature, full of snark and only as something they can get away with over the internet.
But what do I know?
I’m just a cynical old woman ‘White Knight’ who is sick to death of seeing nothing but hate, bile, vitriol and venom slung at the only game she enjoys playing these days…

I could say more, but what’s the point I guess?

I’ll apologize to the OP now for derailing their thread, and wont say any more here… I just hope that their thread doesn’t get overwhelmed and drowned out by all the complainers.

Awesome, a positive focused thread! (What I have to say are my opinions, and not based on fact, but my personal experiences.)

-I’ll start with animations because you talked about that a bit. The animations are not the best I’ve seen in MMOs, but I confidently say they are superior to most MMOs, and only slightly behind a few others. What I really like is that when a character stops moving there is an animation that shows them trying to stop that forward momentum. That’s a detail that is overlooked in A LOT of games.

-I love how the cities feel like they are actually alive and doing something. NPCs move places, have conversations, move dolyaks and supplies around. Speaking of which, I think it’s awesome how NPCs exist all over the world that have conversations and give interesting information in the weirdest places. I only did world exploration once, but I’d love to do it again to run into some characters I didn’t meet the first time around.

- I like how hearts and events get me to do things other then the typical MMO format of “collect x amount of herbs” or “kill 10 boar”. Instead hearts, which I consider to be the quest system of the game, allow me to do multiple things to complete its requirements.

-Events. Yes, they go through loops, and that is still infinitely better than any MMO I’ve ever played. I can run through a fort one day and it is full of allied guards. Next time I go there it is full of centaurs. Bridges are built and destroyed, same with walls. Some areas may want to be avoided during certain events while others encourage players to flock to them.

-Group dynamics. The game encourages players to fight together. It’s awesome that a large amount of players on a map just show up together at an event, group up, and start doing it.

-Art style. I enjoy it. I even like the loading screens. I like how they changed the loading screens when a special event affected an entire map. The graphics are actually really good.

-Environment. I loved exploring. The world is beautiful in some areas, and gritty in others, just how it should be. Dry Top especially blew me away, and is currently my favorite map.

I don’t feel like posting more so those are likely my favorite favorites about the game. There are certainly flaws in the game, including those that I mentioned, but it’s game, all games have flaws. Anyway, have a good day!

Good things, hmm, where do i begin:

Awesome combat, smooth and actually gives u proper mobility as u fight and damage avoidance abilities. Unlike some games that tried to imitate this function, but fail miserably, making the whole combat clunky awkward and pointless, as strafing or moving does not grant you damage avoidance, so it’s just an illusion of mobile combat.

Love all the races and their racial peculiarities, ie animations, comments during combat etc.

The weapon switching and skill changes it affords.

Loooooove the u/water combat and being able to swim/dive etc and the underwater scenery is just astounding.

The artwork in general throughout the game, the wildlife and the way it behaves and interesting enemies, dynamic events and world bosses.

No njnjaring (is that even a word lol?) in the game, ie kill steal, nodes steal, boss steal etc. and love the fact that anyone can gather stuff without having to take up a profession for each type of gathering.

Crafting is great, like the new improvements but would still like recipes and materials to be colour coded according to their rarity, ie; blue recipes are coloured blue, green are green, rare are rare etc and same for mats it would make life soooo much easier when looking for that specific insignia to craft or w/ever.

Like the new wardrobe systems for everything (although i can see room for improvements there still), TP improvements are great and i’m sure there’s much more, but that’s all i can remember atm.

For all their flaws, I still enjoy dungeons and fractals the most. I love the reactive combat system they have and how each class has their own strengths without having a true trinity that forces passive play.

Other thing I love is sPvP, I only play it casually in solo queue most of the time but it’s fun.

Skin hunting. I love how they chose to let us grind for skins instead of a constant gear grind

Nodes can’t be “stolen” by other players like in other MMOs. You never have to wait for the area to reset to be able to do hearts properly. No rolling for gear in group play (imagine losing a roll on a precursor…). And probably some other things that enforce selfish play in other MMOs.

And at last the most important part: Guardian! I love this class so much I can’t get into the others tbh. Of my 3k played hours at least half is played on my guardian.

I vastly prefer Dynamic Events to traditional questing. I can do events over and over, but quests… I get to a point and I just delete the game.

A good thing that I like is that the game is stale and don’t evoluate. Cause arenanet left it since launch, you can come back after 2 years and feel at home when near nothing has changed or been added.

Wait..are you talking about Shadows of mordor ? If so,that game has some of the most fluid animations Ever ( Just look at the physx of cloths when moving for e.g )…I can understand you saying skyrims animations are garbage, but Mordor ? Hell no.

Sidenote,Ive just tried out Archeage like a week ago or so,,and suddenly i can appreciate Gw2 a hell lot more now.

The games you mentioned are very different from Guild wars 2 and should not be compared.

One good thing about Guild Wars 2 is that in general, the game “respects” you. It lets you do anything you want and although some people think otherwise, to me, the grind in this game is all optional. I mean, do we really need to farm 3000 gold for a percursor to enjoy the game? Not really. I don’t have a single legendary and I can still have fun.

as an avid “hater”, even I cannot disregard the many, many things GW2 does really well, way more things than it does really bad. Whoever thinks it is a bad game as opposed to not fitting his personal preferences is out of his mind.

ehh whats good in Gw2…

  • Dynamic Events – Finally questing that isnt frozen in time.
  • Social – Finally a game where helping others is a good thing no matter what angle you look at it. Helping others isnt considered kill stealing or having someone else jump in and take the material node 10 feet away while you’re helping.
  • No Trinity – Cool finally I have characters that arent just capabile of doing a single thing. Doing some little healing or I dont know, using ice / wind as a form of crowd control isnt beyond my “mage” as is generally the case.
  • Freedom from Gear – No need to chase after gear in order to play content. In fact no need to worry about gear at all if one so chooses
  • Scaling – The world doesnt become smaller and smaller as you level up and become more powerful, infact quite the opposite it becomes larger and larger
  • EndGame – EndGame in Gw2 isnt repeating this dungeon or that raid, there is a whole world out there and EndGame here is do whatever you wish in that big beautiful world.
  • Exploration – Exploration in Gw2 is awesome. Its not just finding this nice looking scenery but also discovering hidden events / stories, there are even some unique rewards to be had like a unique town cloth piece as well as some story for those who try to discover all there are to discover. Exploration is also real exploration as some stuff is really well hidden. Gw2 isnt afraid to put in content where most players might never get to see it.
  • Quality of life – Something you truly appreciate when playing other MMOs. Crafting and discovery from the bank, the wallet, ability to send collectibles to the bank from anywhere in the world, gathering nodes that are tied to the player. No picking / handing of quests… plenty of great stuff there
  • Art – the art in GW2 is just outstanding, Visually and Audio, attention to detail. This game has it all.
  • Combat – Combat in this game is just awesome
  • PvP – I am not much of a PvP guy, but the fact everyone gets scaled the same and you dont need to bother getting the best armor and enchant it to its max to even stand a chance means I actually play PvP in this game now and then. In other MMOs I never do.
  • Living story – Its not just quests but the whole world story isnt frozen in time. Things come and Go, events happen and get resolved. That is just great
  • Living world – This is more of a subset of the living story. Even the lowest of supporting character those who essentially have no name arent just forgotten. When Flame and frost hit we got the refugees. After the secrets of southsun the refugees were no longer necessary to the story. Does that mean they got removed from the world? nope Anet put them in Cragstead to help with the rebuilding. This helps a lot more with immersion and creating a believable living world
  • Cadence of updates – new content to enjoy every 2 weeks? This MMO has the fastest update cadence ever.
  • Its not just about the combat – I just love Mini-games, Jumping Puzzles and SAB…
  • Cosmetic Focus – I just the game isnt focused on a power creep system but instead has a robust cosmetic system to keep you busy for a long long long time.

Lots of things Gw2 does good, but better stop thinking before I hit the dreaded 5001 characters
