Gotta catch em all
yup
RIP molten pick, fused weapon and crab grabber for me.
I’m a collector, i just want to say i’m sad certain skins and items won’t be in my collections. If there was some way in the game i’d go for all of them, all the molten skins, all the SAB skins all the dragon bash skins, but as it is now over half the skins that are in the game or will be added will be unreachable in a few months if they aren’t already :/
Sad collector is sad
It kind of kills my motivation to go for anything at all.
Aye. Any games that do limited-duration or cash-shop-only items hit this issue with me. If I can’t achieve a complete collection just through normal gameplay, then the game can’t ever truly keep me interested. I’ll still faff about, but feel like there’s no real point. It’s part of the reason I’ll never actually throw any money at WoW.; I can’t actually get all the mounts now, so **** that.
With GW2 (much like in the first, PSO2, and most other games), it hits a second problem though… There’s not much I actually WANT to collect. The rare system is dull and none of the weapons really feel collectible to me. All that it has that could be a decent collectible are the minis, and since they tend to be limited and/or cashshop, that’s out. Was hoping they’d not pull anything lame like that here, but after the stuff they did with the Asian/tourney minis in the original, I’m not surprised…
A shame fun things could not simply be fun.
I played Guild Wars 1 for many years, and there were items I’d never be able to collect, particularly some of the rare minis. I had to resign myself to the fact that you weren’t really supposed to collect them all, it’s not what they were there for.
If you insist on having everything in a game like this, you’re going to end up disappointed.

Feh. To me, if a collection can’t be completed, it’s not worth bothering with. And collecting things (that are worth actually collecting rather than just being forcibly-injected to drag things out) is the most fun part of these games…
Going for that one super-awesome-amazing item is no fun. Getting all the cool things along the way while working towards a goal of checking everything off? Now that’s fun.
Gods, I miss PSO. ;-(

Killed mine awhile ago. I wasn’t even going for all of them. I only have 2 level 80’s that I liked to get stuff for. Up until then I was able to get everything I had wanted.
I’m not a completionist so to say, but every game I have played I always liked to get the event stuff that I like. Once I missed one on this game I quit caring about it and haven’t really took part since. I’m all geared out and if the game is just for cosmetics at this point and I can’t get what I like, why bother?
(edited by Araziel.7201)
I’d like to throw myself into this boat as well. I’m not particularly proud of my collection mentality, as I know it’s detrimental to my experience, but it’s something I just can’t shake. It’s unfortunate that companies have found this vulnerability in gamer personality and are intent on exploiting it. The limited time only thing really puts me in a hard spot as a player because I tend to play more for keeping my mind at ease rather than for the fun of it. I really do envy players who have either grown out of this habit, or hadn’t felt the compulsion from the start.
In my opinion, if a developer could make an old school game where everything in the game is obtainable by playing the game, I’d be happy as all get out. This doesn’t mean everything has to be easy to obtain, but I do like having the peace of mind that I can make a long term plan to acquire something I want. Unfortunately, Anet, much like my last favorite mmo timekiller, runescape, are deviating along the same path. Right now there is less focus on long term achievement, and more focus on who can log in with their 5 bucks and click a button for a skin that will only be around for a week.
My hope is that in the future we can have a more open conversation with the devs on what we want our personal achievements to grant us. I love this game, and will continue to, but this generation of marketing ploy after marketing ploy is getting tiresome and is detrimental to more players than it may first seem.
1/2 way through i realised its impossible for me to collect all the things i wanted to collect. So i made a compromise and choose only 1 thing to collect namely the mini pets. So far its has been going well although the laurel and guild commendations minis still need a few months to get. I had to give up getting some things to collect them but when i see my more or less complete collection, i think its worth it.
glad you found something you liked, i said before GW2 launched i was gonna do the same with weapon skins. Then the first account bound rng limited time skins came in to play and i was devestated… (by then i already had almost all greatsword skins and several other weapon skins)
I’m right here with you guys:
-missing skins…
-missing minis….
-not enough time for certain achievements (although, if crab toss comes back we may be able to continue working on things like crap grabber or crabtacular)
It makes the ocd completionist in me howl in misery. However, I’m well aware that catering to my ‘affliction’ only tends to makesit worse (and make me a very broke chica). So, as with all things, living by the rule ‘all good things in moderation’ Its only a game after all.

But..play the way you want to play. Right? Isnt that what we are told?

What exactly did you think that meant? I know what it meant because it was explained by the devs on more than one occasion.
Every game has boundaries and parameters. Every single one. There are no exceptions. Take away the boundaries and it’s not a game.
The idea is that most MMOs funnel you into raiding. Want to get the best gear. You have to raid. That’s it. Want to be viable, you have to raid.
In Guild Wars 2, the idea was that someone could get exotic gear just by doing events, or WvW. Hell you can jump into SPvP without PVeing at all. You can do dungeons to get gear. There are many ways to play the game. That’s what was meant by play your way.
Mr. Vayne is at it again. See what I mean? Always popping in threads to take the pro-arenanet/guildwars 2 side of the thread.
The OP is upset because, for some reason or another, he will not be able to obtain every skin in game. This could be because:
-He took a break from the game, and has missed said content(I took a break, missed SAB, and now I wont get those skins unless I shell out 38 gold for a greatsword skin).
-He has grinded, and grinded, and grinded(would ground be a better choice of words) until his eyes bled to farm crates and coffers. Not a single skin, or ticket, or whatever.
-He refuses to spend money in the gem store for the exact chance of the item appearing in these crates/coffers.
-He does not have the money to buy certain skins off the AH.
All of these reasons are valid enough to be a detriment to his playstyle of a skin collector. And if skins are available only through temporary content or an extreme RNG system, then these structures might work against him…against his desires and playstyle.
So..Play the way you want to play. However that may be. And if you want, take a break from the game, and come back. No pressure. You might have missed out on temporary content and skins that are only available through obscene amounts of gold on the TP.

So tell me, how is your solution to this helping the OP at all. I’m trying to help by pointing out that there’s still plenty of game. Because he won’t be able to get those old skins no matter what.
I suppose I could make him feel worse, and agree him. You’re right, OP, you’re screwed.
But you see, that’s not what I do. I try to give some perspective. YOU don’t have to like my perspective, but right now, what you’re doing is pretty much trying to bully me to get me to stop posting.
And if there’s one thing I can’t abide, it’s a bully.
Personally, part of the fun of MMOs for me is seeing other people’s cool things i’ll never get. It never bothered me when other people have something i don’t have or can’t get, it just reinforced the game as a living world where important things still happen when i’m not around.
I was never upset i couldn’t get the Black AQ mount in WoW but let me tell you i was stoked the few times I actually saw the dude riding it across the terrain.
I also am in no way a “completionist”, so unfortunately i can’t relate in that regard.
I have to agree with Vayne.
While GW2 is a sandbox style game where you can ‘play as you please’, as with all things, there are limits. It is ‘play as you please’ within reason.
Much like cesmode, I grumped about the phrase “play the way you want” being used by the developers, because I will never be able to play exactly “how I please.” Its not possible within the bounds of the game as designed by someone else, and you know what, I’m ok with that. It takes a little bit of adapting, and an open mind, so the phrase is misleading, but as with all things, you have to take what someone else says with a grain of salt. Everyone interprets it differently, and as such might not be exactly what was meant by the original person saying it.
Vayne, Im not trying to take your lunch money, so stop whining.
Why sugar coat this to the OP? Im not in the business of wiping noses and holding hands. I have a 2 year old that fills that slot. If he missed out on SAB, like myself, he cannot obtain those skins. The only way to do so is shell out a lot of gold into the TP. Either that, or wait until they do SAB again, if they do it again.
Its an unfortunate circumstance the OP is in, but it is reality and if you would take off your rose tinted glasses you would see this. Those skins are gone, not coming back…at least not for the forseeable future and not without dropping a lot of gold in the TP. Fact. Plain and simple.
This stems to the problem of temporary content, which they say they are addressing. After how many months of people complaining about temporary content, they FINALLY get the hint?

Wow you sound more and more like a bully with every post.
1. You have no authority over me and you don’t get to tell me what to say and not say. There are a lot of people on this forum who complain incessantly about everything. It’s a very negative way to be. I offer balance. If you don’t like it…too kitten bad.
2. When someone has a problem, my gut instinct is to offer some solution which sometimes means changing your perspective. This may have no value TO YOU and you’re free not to pay attention to it. I’m not going to stop doing it. It is actually as helpful as what you’re doing…from a different perspective.
3. If I’m breaking forum rules, feel free to report me. Otherwise, try to avoid telling me what to post and what not to post. Because if I’m not breaking forum rules, you’re way out of line.

By making them an anytime obtainable, potentially no longer rare and desired object. Its intended to be a prestige thing. “I got a rare skin that you can’t get any longer” Although, there is nothing saying that we won’t be able to get them again in the future. Anet has a love of reusable content.
For the love of the game, and this thread in particular, I urge everyone to respect each others opinions and refrain for the time being from going into a quote v quote argument. Everyone has very valid points so far, lets not dilute this thread into a show of personal force. I know you guys love a good conversation. =P
More to the point, I don’t think any of the collectors here have problems with the core gameplay like PvE, WvW, or Dungeons; it’s more of a problem of where the rewards of achieving something are pushing all players. In better words, instead of rewarding diligent gameplay and personal growth and achievement with these little treats, we instead get these things tossed up into a gemstore under limited circumstances that reward nothing more than having 5 bucks at the right time.
For some, this is just as appropriate as time and effort being put into something to obtain something. I, personally, think that a certain degree of this is all in good fun, but hovering bonus after special bonus over players heads time after time again without focusing on core gaming rewards is detrimental in the long run.
That’s all I was personally saying. The collector mentality be a cruel mistress.

So yes they could leave the item in longer if that was what they were going to do (except they already haven’t so it’s a moot point).

She is a cruel mistress indeed.
I don’t mind the limited time things, and I really enjoy the temporary content (and the fact that it is truly temporary…just like life). I don’t even mind the fact that it is RNG in the gemshop. My issue is the uber low drop percentage chances from the RNG, and the lack of tradability. Fix those, and I think we’d be peachy.
So what is someone has the RL money to buy 1000 boxes, let them sell that weapon ticket for ingame gold and repeat the process. Get a few more skins out there. They’d still be rather limited considering supply vs demand.

That’s the very business model that this thread calls into question. It’s a sad thing is it not, when business seeps into gaming? Just like microsoft’s business first mentality that permeates all of their new technology (hindering the consumer in the proccess), so are businesses pushing for more and more in the MMO genre. Maybe, if companies like ncsoft and the like focused more on core gameplay than microtransactions they’d find that they would actually have more money to do things with.
Look at the days where the MMO genre was making its most money. Those were not the days of short lived MMOs and time limited achievement. Today in the market, gaming developers focus on creating an IP, and then burn it on both ends with microtransactions with no regard to longevity, just so they get as much money as possible without having to support something for a very long time. It makes perfect business sense, but why be in the gaming industry at all when you care little for the actual game and more about the flipping of IPs; surely there are more profitable business ventures to be had than lowly game development.
I realize that this is a buy to play game, and will admit that that alone cannot sustain such heavy development that an MMO needs to survive. So the question becomes what is the right balance of microtransactions to rewarding actual achievement.
It may be like you say, and impossible to change; but surely it does not hurt to try?

I’m not disagreeing that the business model might have been designed different up front, but to change it now, with so many items that you can’t get any more, at least for the OPs problem, it’s like closing the barn door after the horse has already escaped.
Sure it would be nice but it won’t help the OP. And realistically I don’t think it’s going to change anyway..but that’s another story.
If everyone has everything then nobody’s special. Especially in an MMO that focuses so heavily on aesthetics. This game’s reward for your effort/timing is letting you become a unique, little snowflake, lol.
I like how Miflett’s mind works. Agreed.
I am more inclined to spend money in the cash shop and support the game if I am having a good time.
1-80, on 5 toons, I had a blast. I spent money in the cash shop more so then than I do now. 1000 hours in, and after playing every aspect of the game many times over, except sPvP…I am no longer having a blast. Taking a break and returning will not fix that(I’ve already tried). So, instead of fixing the cores of the game(dungeon boss mechanics, open world boss mechanics, etc) they throw temporary “get it before its too late” content at us with the added dose of “also available in the gem store”. Yes, the business model reared its ugly head into what was once fun for me. And I definately have noticed a shift in direction with the gem store over the last two or three months. They are driving that machine more so than anything else.
So why do I keep playing you are wondering? Because I have 1000 hours invested, and quite a bit of money. Im sticking around in hopes of some changes. But my lobes tell me otherwise…
If everyone has everything then nobody’s special. Especially in an MMO that focuses so heavily on aesthetics. This game’s reward for your rng luck/real money spend is letting you become a unique, little snowflake, lol.
corrected that for you

I wont disagree with you there, but my point was there is value in having items limited and exclusive. It makes them special.
I don’t expect you to agree with that sentiment, but if all you care about is having every item then i can’t imagine you value one item over another. They’re just line-items checked off a list.
Like i said, i’m not a completionist— it’s a difference of opinion. But if you get upset that an MMO world doesn’t remain static, you’re going to be unhappy for a while, lol.
