Great Game!
Power level increases are attributed to 3 things.
1. Itemization of increasing statistical benefit
2. Skill level of new content of increasing difficulty due to an experienced playerbase
3. Economical inflation making it unaffordable to return.
1 is reputedly stopping at ascended. Theoretically it shouldn’t happen.
2 is going to be a problem as players get better the longer they play, content will need to be scaled accordingly. Luckily the ‘fractals’ concept of multiple tiers of difficulty acknowledge this. With time developers will be able to create meaningful difficulty increases which can be self-selected and thus will also won’t create an ‘unplayable’ game after not playing for a while.
3. Economy in GW2 is surprisingly controlled. For an MMO it’s inflation is quite slow and the addition of account magic find and RNG through mystic forge has created significant item sinks. Gold has value and as long as OP progresses at his own pace and the economy continues as it’s going, then there shouldnt be a disparity there either.
tldr;
GW2’s ‘power level’ IS unrelated to time. This IS a game you can put down and pick up later and have absolutely no problems playing again.
I personally want to thank Anet for continuously improving this game and making it more enjoyable for all of us. Well, most of us. I appreciate all the effort that Anet has put into improving the rewards, the champions, and I’m looking forward to appreciating the new raid soon to come. Awhile ago, I complained that the rewards weren’t enough and that there needed to be something for the hardcore players… a few days later they improved the champion rewards, dungeon rewards, and gave us a ton of bonus rewards as well!
Overall, this game is amazing, and I’m happy to be playing it because I know that I can put it down and then come back to it later without being left behind. Although there are still bugs in the game, I have noticed that Anet has reduced the amount of bugs with each patch significantly so they will not hinder my Living World experience. Again, thank you Anet, and keep doing what you’re doing!
Clearly you don’t play WvW …

Power level increases are attributed to ONE thing, and one thing only, and that is simply introducing an increase in the power level of the game. This is what you do periodically with vertical progression, i.e., progression in the game scales vertically over time.
What Anet introduced last November is VP:
“we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve.” Chris W in the AMA
And, Chris said it would continue (that’s what VP does after all) through upgrades to gear:
“Through infusions and existing Tiers there will be the opportunity to increase stats or abilities on a low power curve through multiple types of gameplay in GW2.”
Having a power curve means having a relationship between power and time. That’s what a curve describes (‘Y’ axis: power; ‘X’ axis: time). So, my question remains. If power is positively related to time, i.e., it continues to rise over time, does that describe a game that you can walk away from and come back to with no concern about the effects of an ever-increasing power level?

Your post is one year too late.
Things have changed quite a bit. You might want to double check what you talk about.
Gear tradmill aint stopping, not even for you.
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”

they all know how much you enjoy the game much better than you do, obviously.

“Unfortunately, the QQers are right on this game. It did fall over and die and then an Anet employ came, hit it with a sledge-hammer and then kicked it off the empire state building.”
Oh, the miracles of implementing carrots and farms.
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
