So my friend just recently went on rant about precursors, legendaries and RNG and spent a whole 15 minutes telling me “they should have been Accountbound on Acquire”, “most of them are ugly”, “You can just BUY them”, etc. But midway through his venting, an idea sprung up in my head that might help with his (and possibly other players’) grief.

I give to you Personal Legendaries!

The way it works is you first “prime” a weapon by using it through gameplay. It will take some time to get the “Primed” header on it but eventually you will see it. This is the precursor that YOU create through experiencing the game.

Then you have to craft a “Body”, “Mind” and “Soul” and then chuck that and the primed weapon into the Mystic Forge to create YOUR very own Personal Legendary. When you receive it, you will be asked to give it a name. From then on you can ping it chat to show it off or whatever. :D

Here is how the creation will play out:

Item 1: Primed <insert weapon here> (for initial shape of weapon)
Item 2: Body of <insert dye color here> (for shade/glow of weapon and size modifiers, no residual particle effects)
Item 3: Mind of <insert top tier material name here> (for weapon particle effects like trails and footfalls)
Item 4: <First gift>ed Soul of <Second Gift> (for body particle effects and sounds)

How to get Item1

  1. Pick you favorite weapon.
  2. Kill things (or just do ALOT of stuff) with it until it says Primed. The more the odds are against you the faster it’ll be primed. (i.e. soloing a powerful world boss or w/e)
WARNING: Priming a weapon is done by a hidden rating and a modifier. As you continue to use the weapon(s) the modifier will slowly increase allowing you to Prime the weapon faster. Unequipping or modifying the weapons in any way will reset this modifier! Priming requires a personal connection with your weapon. :3

How to get Item 2

  1. Get Gift of Color.
  2. Get 50 of one color of dye. (this will lightly shade your weapon that color)
  3. Get 50 of a Lodestone. (this will surround your weapon with a corresponding particle effect when unsheathed. This will not trail and the color of the effect will be the same color as the dye you used.)
  4. Get 150 of T6 or 50 of refined T7 material. (determines other shape modifiers like length, width, depth, etc.)
  5. Throw everything into Mystic Toilet.

How to get Item 3

  1. Get 100 of Lodestone. (This will determine how the weapon trail will look like i.e. Paintbrush, crackle, digital, etc., color is based off of body)
  2. Get 100 of T6 materials. (determines flash effect when unsheathing)
  3. Get 250 of unrefined T7 material. (footsteps, color off Item 2)
  4. Get 1 Gift of Exploration.
  5. Throw everything into Mystic Toilet.

How to get Item 4

  1. Get a Gift of <whatever>. (determines type of body glow and unsheathed effects)
  2. Get another Gift of <whatever>. (determines sound made on attack.)
  3. Get a Bloodstone Shard. (Or a Gift of Exploration if it is a two handed weapon).
  4. Get a stack of items worth 100g or more. (because I ran out of ideas)
  5. Throw everything into Mystic Toilet.

Once you throw these 4 items into the mystic toilet you get YOUR very own legendary that you designed your way. These will be account bound but so worth showing off. As a bonus, I think you should be able to “dismantle” your legendary just in case you think it could be made differently. So I will also suggest this:

How to Dismantle

  1. Have a legendary.
  2. Get 50 Elonian Wine
  3. Get 1 Bloodstone Shard.
  4. Get Mystic Salvage Kit.
  5. Throw them into Mystic Toilet.

And boom, Primed weapon, Body, Mind and Soul are taken off. If you want to salvage said parts you just throw them into the forge too but you only get back some of the materials you used.

Finally, I present to you “Eternity Tier” PLs. All you simply do is make 2 legendaries of the same weapon type and then put them both in the Mystic Forge. The end result is a weapon that has the first PL’s shape and effects by day and the second PL’s shape and effects by night.

What does everyone think about this?

I can understand that. This post is meant as a means of gathering opinions for a possible system. I don’t expect this to go through at all but I would like to know if players would actually go for a legendary if this system ever existed. Thank you for your input.

I like any idea that allows me to get a legendary without RNG or TP. While that does not sound like a vote for this specifically, I do really like the idea of more legendary weapons and having them be more customized.

I did put a little RNG in there for flavor. Gift of Fortune for example would make up most of the RNG for these legendaries but that’s it.

Why thank you!

The reason why I put it in there is because most experienced swordsmen will never use another sword, purely because the one they used is the one they trained with and the one they’re most effective with.

So if you constantly use a weaponset your toon should reach that level of connection with their weapon.

EDIT: I actually have an idea for it so people who really want it have to put in some commitment.

I like this idea, but it could use some reworking. Consider the following:

“Primed” needs a more solid definition, and needs something done to the weapon before it starts counting, so that Anet doesn’t need to put counters on every weapon in the game. Perhaps Have Miyani sell a gear upgrade which counts “Accomplishments” after being attached to a weapon. An accomplishment can be getting a kill, or completing an event, heart, vista, jp, dungeon, etc with the weapon equipped as current weapon (doesn’t need to be last hitting, but needs to be currently equipped- being the other weapon swap doesn’t count.) The counter adjusts a prefix on the weapon’s name (0 = Berzerker’s Greadsword of Stuff, 10 = Hardy Berzerker’s Greatsword of Stuff, 25-, 50-, 100-, 250-, 500-, 1000-, 2500-, 5000-, 10000 = Fabled Berzerker’s Greatsword of Stuff). I’ve changed “Primed” to “Fabled” here- sounds more like a precursor to legendary, and that’s exactly what it is in this proposal. The Fabled weapon replaces the precursor in the standard legendary recipe template. The gifts of fortune and Mastery are left as is; they’re basic parts of making a legendary. The weapon skin of the Fabled weapon at the time of forging becomes the model for the resulting Legendary.

The Fabled weapon and the Gifts of Mastery and Fortune make up 3/4 pieces, that last is the Legendary-specific Gift. The player can craft one of the existing Legendary-specific gifts and get the effects of that weapon, or they can craft “The Gift of Legend”.

Gift of Legend:
-Gift of the Adventurer (Determines Footfall Effect)
-Gift of Radiance (Determines Ambient Effect on Player and Weapon) OR Gift of Essence (Ambient effect only applies to weapon, not player)
-Gift of Creation (Determines Attack/Projectile Effects)
-Gift of Harmony (Determines the sound effects)

In Gifts of Adventurer, Radiance, Essence, and Creation:

-2 full stacks of dyes, determining the range of color for the effect, IE a Stack of Red and a Stack of Yellow gives the hues of the red through the yellow, giving a fiery look. Making either a stack of Unidentified makes the result all hues.
-One stack of Fine or 100 Rare crafting materials determines particle shape and Size from tier and type, respectively (250 Vicious claws makes large crescents, 100 charged sliver makes tiny electric sparks, etc).
-One Superior Rune (Air for Radiance, Rage for Essence, Adventurer for Adventurer, and Exuberance for Creation.)

Gift of Harmony:
-One Superior Rune of Perplexity
-One weapon or weapon skin (This is the base firing sound.) This may be substituted with one of the recipes for one of the Legendary-specific sub-gifts (Gift of Color, Liquid Flame, etc), to take the sound of that Legendary.
-One stack of Materials from the Crystalline Dust family of Fine materials- the tier determines the volume of the sound.
-Any amount of either Obsidian or Ectoplasm to change the pitch- More Obsidian means lower pitch from original, More Ecto means higher than original. Alternatively, use a Vision crystal for the same pitch as original.

Gifts of Harmony, Adventurer, Creation, and either Radiance or Essence combine to form The Gift of Legend, which carries all the information for those pieces.

Fabled Weapon + Gift of Legend (or pre-existing Legendary-specific Gift)+ Gift of Fortune + Gift of Mastery = Customized Legendary Weapon. Upon forging of the weapon, the player gets to apply a custom name. Weapon has selectable stats and all the regular capabilities of other legendary weapons.

Have to say, earning a Legendary (or even a pre) by having your Chosen Weapon earn its own XP through the stuff you do sounds like a far worthier requirement than using the TP or waiting for the item to literally drop into your lap from the RNG.

The customisation might be, as others have noticed, impossible right now, but I like the Journey.

@ Piogre

That does look like a lighter version of mine but the grind for Mastery and Fortune makes me cringe. >.<

However I do like it. The reason why I chose “Primed” is because I think of it as a catalyst. Maybe when I have the time I will revamp it to something less intensive.

Thanks for your input.

I actually quite like the general idea. The whole precursor thing is a little silly. Not only the idea of praying for it to drop, but praying for the one you want to drop. With a “prime” system instead of precursors, i would be comfortable with legendaries being harder to obtain (no i don’t have one yet). Perhaps to prime the weapon you have to have beaten all the world bosses, gained map completion and attained max rank in PvP, PvE and WvW.

Some other minor stuff should be done in between with the weapon you want as a legendary to turn it into a legendary including some serious crafting for customization, with each recipe slightly tweaked depending on varying aesthetic options. As it is now, as a necro, there are no legendaries I want, cuz of the christmas-y effects on them.

With requirements like these maybe there will be some weight to holding a legendary weapon. These days I look at someone pass with sunrise and i don’t look twice cuz i’m like, that looks nice..that guy/girl’s got some good farming skills.

Also, it would be seriously nice if legendaries with these requirements actually came with an additional unique skill depending on the class. I’m pretty sure it can be done without breaking the game.

I really like the Lotro’s Legendary Weapon system. I could write a book about it, but i’ll try to be as brief as i can, but i think it’s worth mentioning it as i think some of these ideas could be used (although knowing Anet, i know they want to forge their own legend by doing things differently to anyone else lol). Still this may give them some inspiration, i hope.

AT lvl 50 (although you can start at lvl 45), but it’s a lvl 50 quest) you get a quest to obtain your legendary weapon. The quest has a few stages, first getting the weapon, then a kind of tutorial where you have to lvl up ur weapon to lvl 10, then you have to take it to a forge master to reforge it, then to a relic master who shows you how to insert relics (up to 4 and the last one can only be crafted by the player who will use it).

Your weapon has to be reforged every 10 lvls or it won’t get further exp until you do that and this is how you gain legacies (weapon’s stats) Each time the weapon is reforged, u get a choice of 2 legacies to choose form to add to your weapon and you can have 6 and get one extra with a special item, but this is high lvls stuff.
These legacies are directly related to your class skills, except the first one, which increased your weapon’s base dmg. These legacies may improve dmg of certain skills or it may reduce cooldowns on them or make certain buffs last longer etc (kinda works bit like traits or even typical weapons stats that gw2 has).

Each lvl gained by your weapon, you also gain certain number of points to distribute among your legacies .

Upon acquisition, the weapon is at lvl 1 and u basically lvl it by killing foes and completing quests. You only get exp from quests in lvl 50+ zones.

Your weapon goes up to lvl 60 but you can extend it to 70 by using a special scroll. These scrolls are often given as epic quest rewards or may drop from locked lootboxes. The keys for these boxes also drop form mobs and can be traded.

Once you compete the first part of your quest, you then get a small 2nd part, where you get your 2nd legendary/weapon item. Some classes get to use 2 legendary weapons, while others get a class slot item instead, as there are not legendary shields, those classes that use a shield and 1h weapon usually get a class slot item.

Once you complete these quests and start questing in those lvl appropriate zones, other legendary weapons (of which there are 3 types) start dropping from mobs, at least the lowest tier ones. These weapons are always unidentified and you have to take them to forge masters scattered around the world to identify them.

Lowest type is 3rd Age series (a pink color and very common drop form mobs)

2nd Age series, is teal color and may drop from mobs up to lvl 60, though very rarely. Mostly they’re found in dungeons where bosses may drop them.

The 1st Age weapons are gold color and most sought after. They have the highest dmg rating, highest points awarded per lvl and are hardest to get. The teal and gold weapons higher than lvl 60 can only be crafted by the players who have maxed out their reputation with the in-game crafting guild, made up of NPC’s.

Upgrading:
The weapons that drop in the world are generally used to deconstruct at the Relic Master to extract new legacies but mostly for relics. There’s an entire relic upgrading system, which to get say relic lvl 10 may take deconstructing100’s of pink weapons, which is the part i don’t like as it makes it rather tedious and girndy and diminishes that initial awe and excitement of getting your first legendary weapon.

This is a very deep and complex system and a lot of your game time revolves around ur legendary weapons, constantly upgrading them as u lvl up and making them better and it basically never ends. Because very often as soon as you got that 1st Ager, they up the lvls and you have to stat over again lol. But at this point, your in a much better position to get your weapon sorted out quickly as by now u got many relics built up and also better knowledge of how you want to shape your weapon.

Sorry about the lengthy post here, but there’s lot to this and it’s hard to describe it in a few sentences.

Edit: i accidentally hit submit instead of preview and had to edit some typos., but there’s probably more lol.

I love the idea.

I’m not 100% certain the exact recipes you thought up would be how I would have implemented it, but I certainly would love to grind away for a legendary that had

  • my choice of skin
  • my choice of shade
  • my choice of particle effect
  • my choice of footprints
  • could be named by me

Especially if there was an option to leave out the footprints/shade/etc in case I didn’t want them.

I’m running around with a set of Dragon Jade weapons on my engi and I’d be motivated to put significant time into turning them into modifying them ever so slightly.

Oh, one thing:

Unequipping or modifying the weapons in any way will reset this modifier! Priming requires a personal connection with your weapon.

I would probably take the “unequipping” part out of there. People swap weapons for all kinds of things, for instance because they’re asked to bring a specific weapon set to a complicated boss fight, or use different setups for PvE and PvP. It would also probably put elementalists at a disadvantage (as they can’t swap weapons without unequipping) and engis at an advantage (as they don’t have that many weapons available to swap out by unequipping anyway and I have to assume that using kits wouldn’t reset the modifyer). Then again, the entire priming system would put engis at a disadvantage (same as weapon mastery achievements) because kits.

Another thing they could do is make weapon use 100% causmetic and make damage based on weapon mastery category of your account. Makes an actual purpose for that section of achievements. Also give damage bonus based on slayer category and effects based on title we have. Overkill should increase our crit damage… There is a lot of things they can do to introduce character customization and spauncer character development over time.. however the issue is always in the balance.

However, the balances would take forever. Solution make each effect so small that there is no necessary balance so that sum of the effects are impactful but individually they ultimately are not.

GW2 has a great foundation but anet really hasn’t shown what they want to do with it yet. But i would like them to show everything they implement has a purpose.

I’ll think on it but I consider it reasonable. The total weapon exp remains the same regardless if you unequip it or not. The modifier for the exp, however, is meant to give your weapon the feeling of non-linear growth (hopefully) and since its a legendary it should be ABoU. So you can make it on one character and then give it to another if I understand it correctly.

Still I will think on it.

Great idea. As someone who doesn’t have a legendary, has never seen a precursor drop and is not inclined to grind gold to purchase a precursor I really think this idea has merit. It would be a much more rewarding way to craft a legendary and the level of customization would make it worth pursuing. None of the current legendary weapons have a personal aspect to them, nor are they worth the grind in my opinion.

Successful opportunism is often indistinguishable from a masterful plan.

You’re taking something that is akin to winning the lottery as it exists and making it an eventuality for everyone. The only way this could really be fair is if the costs became that much higher.
