Hi guys! There has been some discussion about whips as a possible new weapon type in various sub forums and other threads such as “which weapon types would you andd and why?”
But surely whips deserve a thread of its own!
(I know of the theard in the ranger subforum, but but but… other classes want whips too.)

Here’s my thoughts (this is just me dreaming up something I would love to be able to play with):

Whips (in real life) can be used with main hand, off hand and dual-wielded. Whips can be used for noise, damage, and control (i.e. wrap an item or person).

Main hand: (mainly) damage
- Smack (moderate damage)
- Slice (less damage + bleed)
- Knock down (least damage + knock + cripple)

Off-hand: control
- Wrap (immobilize)
- Pull

Disclaimer: most skills do more than just 1 or 2 things at a time, but I wanted to keep the above list simple. But there is a lot of room to be creative with additional conditions for the class-based skills…

Classes who can use the whip - What I think

Ranger: off-hand
Excuse: pet control, “beastmaster style”
Enhancing the axe or sword in main hand.

Thief: off-hand
Excuse: catburglar, “catwoman style”
Enhancing dagger or sword in main hand.

Engineer: damage
Excuse: non-magical ranged weapon (short range), adventuring “Indy style”
An alternative to the main hand pistol skills, combines with off-hand pistol or shield.

Necromancer: dual-wield
Excuse: minion control, “evil dominator style”
Dual whips will make the necro look like a total boss.

Total combinations overview (I think they all work):
Axe + Whip (Ranger, Necromancer)
Sword + Whip (Ranger)
Dagger + Whip (Thief, Necromancer)
Sword + Whip (Thief)
Pistol + Whip (Thief)
Whip + Pistol (Engineer)
Whip + Shield (Engineer)
Whip + Whip (Necromancer)
Whip + Dagger (Necromancer)
Scepter + Whip (Necromancer)
Whip + Focus (Necromancer)
Whip +Warhorn (Necromancer)

Classes who can use the whip - What others think

I also hear people want the whip for Warriors, Mesmers and Elementalists. I’m not personally a fan of these combinations so this is not a priority to me, but nobody should feel left out so early in the discussion, so here goes:

Warrior: off-hand
Excuse: “gladiator style”. I don’t see any warrior trading their high damage weapon for a whip, but I guess they could use it as an alternative to the warhorn / shield if they would prefer some control skills over boons / protection.

Elementalist: I have no idea
I have never played an elementalist so I really don’t know. My personal opinion is that whips are non-magical weapons; or if you would like a “magical whip” instead that’s already in the game (lightning whip), or could be, as previously suggested, a scepter skin which would automatically be available to elementalists.

Mesmer: I have no idea
I haven’t spent enough time playing my mesmer either to really have an opinion outside of that I don’t really see how a whip would suit the otherwise posh and elusive style of a mesmer. But: if it was a scepter skin would automatically be available to mesmers (same as with eles and necros).

And secondly, style! What whip skins can’t you live without?
I’ll start:

  • Standard adventuring leather whip (think Indy)
  • Verdant “plant” whip
  • Multy strain black leather gothy whip
  • Colorful circus whip (similar to Quip)

Oh boy I have to continue:

  • A Snake (an actual daemon snake) or a long tentacle whip (perfect for Necro)
  • Metal chain Whip (related)

And for the legendary

All I have to say is to Necromancer + Whip is: Castlevania.
Enough said.

Some ideas: (expecting the whip to be 1 handed)
Elementalist + Whip:
<Fire
— Dragons Hit – Hits the enemy with a burning whip, enflames the enemy
— Flaming Ground Pound – Hits the ground creating a long AoE of fire
— Fire Circle – Damages everything around your character creating an AoE fire ring
+ Burning Cannon – Throws your enemy away inflicting knock down and burning damage
+ Dragons Claw – Holds the enemy tight inflicting fire damage as well as immobilizing
<Water
— ?
— Water Pitcher – does multiple hits healing yourself with each
— ?
+ Cold Ram- Transforms your whip in a ram of ice to hit and knocks them down
+ Frozen Cage – freezes your enemy on hit immobilizing him/her
<Air
— ?
— Critical Shock – attacks your enemy with 100% shocking on hit
— ?
+ ?
+ Amplifier – collects enough energy to create an explosion where your whip hits.
<Earth
— ?
— ?
— ?
+ Thrown Dirt – Throw up dirt with your whip to blind your enemies.
+ ?

Necromancer + Whip:
— Scourge – dmg and bleed target extra damage if you attack from behind
— False Penance – flog yourself to gain might and fury small chance of inflicting fear on nearby enemies
— Hangman’s Noose – channel dark energy through the whip to immobilize and damage your foe (maybe the new condie depending on its final theming)
+ Snakes Grab – Transforms the whip into a snake immobilizing and poisoning your enemies.
+ Dark Domination – Sends fear upon your enemies.

Excellent suggestions, I particularly like the self-flogging… it would be difficult to do with an 8 foot bullwhip, but it is very creative and befitting of a necromancer…

The whip is already a held item. Like when u pick up a tree branch. This is seen in the Sylvari personal story line in where you have a whip-like weapon (its called a vine i think but who cares XD). So it’s not a weapon like a sword or mace or whatever, its just a held item. But i think the concept is already there. Also I agree, I want land spears, or better yet some more weapons in general. Like a LEGIT scythe. Not a scythe skin, but a scythe. Just some ideas

Well technically you wouldn’t need to use the full length just grab a length or use it while it’s coiled

Engineer Whip Skills:

Main Hand
#1: Body Strike Strike your foe’s vital parts and apply Vulnerability
#2: Go for the Eyes Strike your enemy’s face causing Blindness
#3: Sonic Boom Use your whip to create a powerful wave resulting in a sonic boom. AOE Effect. Foes stroked this way will get 2 seconds of Daze.

Off Hand
#4: Static Entangle Entangle your enemy’s feet and immobilize for 2 seconds. You can pull the Whip resulting in the enemy’s Knockdown.
#5:Whirligig Wrap your enemies plying Weakness every second (3 seconds max). Optionally pull to turn them intro a whirligig and applying 8 stacks of confusion.

1 sonic crack – hyper accelerate your whip to create a sonic assault. Range 600
2 gadgets reach – pull enemy in close. Strike with the butt of the whip to daze
3 digeredoo – spin the whip rapidly above your head. Dmg enemies in close range. Apply confusion ti those within 600. Whirl finisher

I wanted to make it unique AND supplement skills that the engineer is missing. What you say at nr.2 … don’t we already have the ToolKit magnet pull+pry bar hit ?

I recently played the early Sylvari mission which kits you with a whip and a full bar of skills, and it was amazing. The Nightmare Court also use whips, and I noticed last night that the Consortium in Southsun Cove also use them against the settlers. Considering the animations are already in the game I think they could easily give them a little touch up and add them as usable weapon types. +1 to this post.

Today I created a topic about the new weapon I’d like to see and ; guess what ! It was the Whip. However I deldeted it to make it more centralized discussion to here.

I would like to see the Whip on classes like the Necromancer, Ranger, Thief and Mesmer.

I find it would all fit thematically to each and any one of them

Maybe vary in some range differences between the classes.

Bleeds, CC, disarms, and such all fit the weapon type perfectly and some of the suggestions mentioned here, are exactly what i had in mind for them too !

Whips sound kind of gimmicky to me. I’m not sure whether or not they’d have a future in-game.

That said, I think whips would fit the standard Necro, Theif, Ranger definitely. I also love the idea of a Mesmer with a whip ‘cause they’re such a unique class anyway.
