The question is very straightfoward, as Im getting closer to finishing my Sunrise Im starting to wonder who is more worthy of such weapon.

First I will say my issue; Mesmer dont have many skills to show off the nice weapon, no whirls, no motions, only thing they have is the GS throwing skill. But on the bright side they have got range and lots of damage

Whereas Guardian show off the weapons beautifully with just the autoattack but on the dark side I feel so [generally] endangered with that weapons in most scenarios like WvW.

So I want to ask GW2D which one do YOU see more worthy of such weapon (effectivity wise, given that im suddenly quite skilled with both professions) , for atleast 80-90% of the game; that includes ope world PvE, pug dungeons, organized dungeons, fractals, WvW roaming, zerging, etc,

Thanks in Advanced!

Warrior.

There is no other reasonable choice.

IT’S A SWORD. THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.

The character you enjoy and play more.

No point having Sunrise on a character that you don’t play. Especially if all you want to do is show it off.

First, I don’t like GS legendary, as there are much nicer GS skins around …

The GS is one of the best weapons guardians have. It’s usefulness and animations on a guardian outshines anything a mesmer can do using the same weapon.

If you cannot use a GS properly on a guardian, then this class is not for you. So, give whatever shiney GS you have to your mesmer.

Guardian. You usually don’t have to range (idk about FoTM, never ran it) means you could show off your weapon more.

It really should go to the character you play more. I contemplated forging Sunrise for my guardian since I played her the most for a time. But I ended up enjoying my mesmer more, so all of legendaries were crafted for her (Bolt, Sunrise, Minstrel).

If it came down strictly to how a character used the weapon skin then the guardian would be a better choice for using Sunrise. It’s somewhat lackluster on my mesmer since it only changes the animation on GS 2. But I do like seeing it on my mesmer as she is my main character now

Though I appreciate the answers, I would appreciate it even more if we had less of these answers. This isnt about me, this isnt about skill level (yes I can use GS on guardian thankyouverymuch) this about why YOU would put a greatsword on either profession.

I have been playing this game since release but even then I have a lot to learn (yes, including you too, even though you might think otherwise), so I want to know what other players who have had plenty of experience on that field can tell me.
I have seen both Guardians and Mesmers with Sunrise, I just want to know what makes it so desirable to put em on said class besides looks.

Well since the legendaries do not have the best stats for a berserker mesmer it would suite a WvW guardian more I think.

On another note.
But myself I do not like the current ones and I hope Anet creates true legendary weapon with history in gw1. I would go for the obsidian sword or of course the bonedragonstaff.

I would put a legendary GS on a Guardian, rather than a Mesmer. Mostly because I believe that Mesmer GS is underwhelming, however Guardian skills also do a better job of showing off the weapon via animations. For both dungeons and open-world PvE, GS on Guardian is top-tier, while GS on Mesmer doesn’t really do a whole lot relative to other Mesmer weapons. WvW is similar, GS on Guardian is very strong where as GS on Mesmer is… well, I guess it’s ok there.

I don’t have a legendary or a Guardian so take what I say for what it is :P

Sunrise in particular suits both a Mesmer and Guardian well.

the whole weapon of light fits the Guardian “holy” theme and since the Mesmer GS is in essence a magical sword Sunrise seems perfect for that too.

I think it does have everything to do with looks and theme, especially since we know that in the future Anet will add the option to change stats on a Legendary.

For what it is worth I would put it on a Mesmer- even though the skills do not show off the weapons as well as on a Guardian.
GS on a Mesmer is an awesome weapon and the fact that only some of the skills show off the effect make it more desirable to me-less obtrusive and so much more surprising when you do notice

I’ll admit I’ve never played a mesmer, so my opinion is going to be a bit biased. That being said, I would play it on a guardian, simply because on my guardian I’d die less. There’s nothing more pathetic looking or embarrassing for myself, personally, than to have a big flashy legendary and dieing with it all the time.

very well said there ^^,
id put it on mesmer, but i main a mesmer so its a biased choice, and ive played every class apart from a a guardian, ive never really had trouble with guardians apart from one from the TAG guild in RoF but he still didnt win he was just a tank, my point is, put it on what you are most skilled with, the worst thing i could think of just like berelious here is dieing with the legendary and looking like a pve noob that just knows how to farm.

You can build around a weapon to bring out it’s strength(s), but that doesn’t necessarily make it better than another option. I was also referring to PvE, not so much WvW because I don’t really skirmish in WvW anymore. The reality is, in dungeons where melee and DPS is king, GS on Mesmer is lackluster, where as it is very good on a Guardian.

yep even in pve, if you were to try lupi solo you’d need GS and s/f with reflect, the GS for speed is crucial for the dps, you could replace with sceptre and pistol but it wouldnt be as fast

but yeah i 100% spec fully for WvW its my endgame

GS for Lupicus Solo is just plain bad. Not that only GS sucks in PvE, for Lupicus Solo it’s about the worst choice you can make. It literally brings nothing but a phantasm that tries to get you killed while offering extremely low damage. You’d even better be using Staff here without Phase Retreat.

1) MY first pick would be Warrior, he is the best GS wielder in the game.

2) Between just guardian and mesmer it’s a tough choice because I don’t use a GS on either of them. My guardian uses hammer for DPS in all areas of the game (pve/pvp/wvw/dungeons) and my Mesmer uses a staff.

In the end I would probably pick Mesmer. I really love my hammer guardian, so I would train myself to just be a GS mesmer. Mesmers with sunrise are way more rare in the game and having 3 clones with sunrise would be big pimpin.

I’d pick Guardian – Warrior – Mesmer in that order.

I main a Mesmer and while the GS is a decent weapon (I use GS/staff), its not really something you show off. Especially not with tacky effects exploding on the blade every time you attack. Granted the clones would wield it as well but still not worth it IMO. Only thing decent is playing a Norn and using the By-The-Power-Of-Greyskull animation of the iBerserker.

Warrior GS may be considered a good weapon, but I find it weak when not playing pure insta-kill berserker – which I rarely, if ever do. I prefer axes.

Guardian however would be my top pick. Flashy animations, melee and an important tool.

That said… In the end I’d still give Sunrise to my Mesmer so I can swap between Bifrost and Sunrise ^^.

In other words, give it to the class you play.

I run whatever I like in dungeons. If you dont spec for focus reflection, the sword/focus combo is just as good as your “poor” greatsword. For Warrior I’ve even used mace&sheild, something I never see nowadays!

Guardian ftw! The GS on the guardian can be ran with any type of build, imo. You can use it for both WvW, pvp( but not the legendary), dungeons, fractals, open world pve. It owns in ALL! I personally love running the GS on a guard, u got ur 5 which is a CC skill u got 3 which blinds a few ppl, 4+2= cure conditions, i just love it! But thats my opinion, to each their own. I would also recommend selling sunrise and wait for new legendaries to be added to the game, just incase u see something u like alot more than sunrise and if not u can always make sunrise again and have a kitten ton of gold left

GS is a backup, opening and control weapon for mesmer…
Your primary weapon is sw/X but gs is useful also unless you are stacking in every single corner of an easy dungeon with 3 warriors and a guardian.

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

As a Mesmer you need to be as discreet as
possible in the way you play, and you don’t want
anything that would increase your opponents
situational awareness,in regards to your
illusions.If I’m not mistaken,the particle effects
of a legendary weapon,do not appear on the
weapons of clones and phantasms.
And the particle effects of legendary GS are
a bit too much to go unnoticed.
Also a Mesmers GS is part of it’s illusions.
You see it yield a melee weapon that in
reality is a ranged one.
And you don’t get to swing it that much.
It is just pew pew, firing beams and clones,
and bananas.
I would definitely go for the Guardian.
You will have more fun with it,and it
will serve it’s purpose as a true melee weapon.

I stand by great swords being used as melee weapons and not ranged weapons. I quit playing my Mesmer because of the great sword being the highest damage dealer ( range wise ) out of their weapons. Great Swords as ranged weapons isn’t my preference.

Edit: Forgot to answer the question. I definitely would go with the Guardian over the Mesmer for the great sword. IMO the great sword is the best weapon for Guardians and Warriors, when it comes to melee combat.

The GS auto attack at a distance actually does good damage. Additionally the GS 2 Skill can grant you up to 9 stacks of might and hit hard when you are traited and positioned correctly. The GS 3 skill strips a boon off of up to three targets at the same time. Striping Protection specifically off your target is huge. GS 4 Phantasm does amazing damage and you can have 3 of them up at once. They attack the target and are mobile and will continue to track their target. GS 5 creates great separation, is a perfect Knockback when rezzing a downed surrounded ally, and serves as an awesome interrupt. Sword 2 does good damage but it’s best used for it’s evade. Sword 3 is buggy joke that works only 3/4 of the time. Focus 4 is good but it’s not as reliable since they added the one second cast time in between laying it down and its pull. Focus 5 is decent when you’re target does not move an inch and if you’re traited to have it reflect projectiles. Sword 1 does remove a boon but only on its third attack. If as a mesmer you auto attacking an enemy with sword 1 you’re doing it completely wrong. I also guess you’re a PvE only player. But either way you still have both GS and Sword/Focus but GS Sword/Pistol is more reliable damage output. If you play Staff – Sword / Focus I feel sorry for you.

I am a dungeon player. And in dungeons if you camp a ranged set you are bad. You are both positioned out of range of boons from allies, and you do less damage than if you just melee’d. I run Sword/Pistol (or sword) + Sword/focus, for a combination of DPS and utility.

Here’s my thinking;

I like Juggernaut, and will put it on my Guardian. Therefore if I got a legendary sword I would put it on my mesmer.

Motions in general trigger the cool effects of Sunrise/Twilight, and iirc, the phantasmal berserker also wears the legendary right? Or wrong? It would show the effect if it did at least.

Legendary weapons are best shown off. The Guardian will be better at doing that, by a huge amount.

Guardians are also very useful and viable in small skirmishes, taking forts and large battles in WvW, just not the best solo roamers.

I think there are also better matching Great Swords for the Mesmer like Vision of the Mists. If matching is your thing.

WvW is similar, GS on Guardian is very strong where as GS on Mesmer is… well, I guess it’s ok there.

>“Scumbagzerkerspeedrunner” input

ahhh you hurt me sooo much xD GS mesmer is not lacking, its crucial to my build, im not in anyway showing off here so please no attacks people xD but i can take several people on at the same time and the GS is what lets me do it, (with s/f) Zerk ftw. please dont make bold statements when almost every class can be good it just takes skill to exploit there strengths

This is an uneducated statement. GS on Mesmer is one of their most powerful weapons. Most players don’t fully understand how to use it and have a very limited understanding of the Mesmer Trait lines.

Uneducated statement? GS is a ranged weapon. It does poor damage within the range of boons of your party, and the one hand sword auto-attack is superior. You also lose the utility of a focus off-hand, if you run GS. Players who run GS in dungeons are bad and should feel bad.

I re-read my post it came across wrong. I think your setup is good but the only boons you really need for your DPS are might and fury. I don’t think Light Armor classes should be right in the middle of fray normally unless they are specifically traited and equipped that way. And as a good players it’s on us to survey the entire situation not just the target. So we’ll know who to call when to call and yell on our voip what’s happening and what moves the party should make in real time. I’m sure your build works great but I’m also extremely confident in my build and that it get’s it done better than most. I’ll go ahead and call this one a win/win. PM Me and I’ll tell you build and you can test it out. I rock almost the same build in PvE as I do in sPvP and I’m among the top 200 on the sPvP Team Leaderboards, or was the last time I checked at least.

Being in the middle of the fray is actually perfectly safe. You get protection off your party, blocks and use blurred frenzy if you’re about to eat a lethal attack. Mainhand sword auto is also strongest mesmer DPS (bar the phantasms).

Guardian since It’s the manliest use of that weapons hands down. The GS on warriors is simply for some cheesy make shift thief fight reset/lol hundred blades after a 4ish second mace stun. The last thing you should want people to think about your new legendary is how it gets smaller as you zip away into the sunrise (pun intended). Mesmer isn’t even an option since AN could replace the greatsword with the ugly stick and it would still make about as much sense.

The lack of Guardians movement abilities and range combined with their GS animations should make this a no brainer for anyone who wants to make the most of their legendary, but of course this is just my opinion.

How the KITTEN can someone assume Mesmer GS’s DPS as “good”? Low coefficient autoattack with slow casting speed. Low damage, slow cast #2 providing 3 short duration might stacks which actually might be contraproductive overwriting ones with longer duration. Low damage #3, stripping boons off of targets is either impossible or useless. Except iMage the worst phantasm the mesmer have. Not only that it deals crap damage, it also moves (which is not good as you might know as dungeon player). Knockback on #5. Focus Pull is better in every situation. If you use GS #5 in a fight you simply make your whole party mad.
The GS literally offers NOTHING. Anyone who uses it in Dungeons or even assumes it’s a good choice is a bad player.

I’d rather not use the GS in WvW for example.

Quite a few in my guild (including myself) are bad players then. Yet we have fun and complete dungeons. I am happy to be a bad player in this case.

Please, when we prefer something because we enjoy the combat of it, don’t refer to us as bad players. Because we are not. You can make your point about other weapons being stronger/having better utility without resorting to that. You will find more people will agree with you much faster, when you put it like that.

And no, you don’t have to play with us and we don’t have to play with you. Make groups of players that you get along with. Just as us calling your group elitism is not fun (and I feel ashamed when that happens by other casual players), your group calling us bad players is not fun either.

You just invalidated your own argument by stating that everyone who disagrees is an idiot. It shows that you lack the ability to think beyond your own views and as such, have a really poor concept of how the game actually works.

Fixed it. You can play how you want of course and aren’t a bad player. But in terms of not beeing a leech to your party you are.

Guardian. What of the reasons why the legendary Greatswords are so nice is because they have a trailing effect that really comes out when the sword is in constant motion, such as spinning, which is seen in 2 guardian greatsword skills.

Anyone who thinks GS is the best weapon for dungeons doesn’t play two one-handed weapons efficiently (no matter the profession: sword/X for guardian, mesmer and ranger and axe/X for warrior).

As blunt as he was, if you’ve actually tried using sword/X + sword/Y weapon sets in dungeons you’ll realise GS is bad for dungeons, and disagreement with his view will come out of ignorance or stubbornness.

Okittenep hearing about how Mesmer doesnt have damage on the GS, and I have to say; WHAT?! A shatterer mesmer build that Im running can burst down any golme and player in the mists so fast that it leaves my GS guardian wishing even maximaxing all possible damage outputs with several stacks on might and such.

Granted, it might not be completely AoE like Guardian and it might not bring utility, but it is definitely harder to scape a mesmer earing a GS than a guardian wearing GS, which in most cases people will just run away once your pull has been used.

I believe mesmer’s damage comes from the fact that I can stack 25 vulnerability in a couple of seconds, followed by 4 shatterers in a couple of seconds more, all that while removing around 8 boons, applying 8 stacks of confusions and applying 4 seconds of daze.

PvP wise Mesmers win. Now, as for dungeons, I dnt have my mesmer fully leveled but I do see people asking for at least one in some fractals (granted, guardians are asked more but thats becuase that awesome wall of reflections, which I would give anything to trade it with that (kinda) useless skill that absorbs one random projectile and shoots it back. I would be GOD LIKE. Also, I would love to have some 25% mov speed, maybe remove the 10% boon increase passive for it? Anet get to it! One or the other please (and we know wall of reflection wont happen)

Your whole post is kind of not related to the topic at all.

No need to show combatlog screens proving GS is a bad weapon. Even wiki’ing is enough there.

Pretty much anyone that thinks that GS is a bad weapon choice for Mesmer does not understand the game mechanics or is just is plain bad player…. That’s the truth. If your playing Sword/X + Sword/X and think you’re doing right I feel very sorry for you. What’s worse is that there are even more of you so now we’ve got the blind leading the blind.

I would absolutely love to duel any of you Sword/X + Sword/X with my GS + Sword/Pistol Mesmer. I’ll show you first hand what sort of DPS a real player behind the wheel of a Mesmer can do. And I didn’t get <200 on the Team sPvP Leadeboards by not knowing how to play Mesmer as a part of high level team. If you honestly think GS for Mesmer is a poor weapon choice then please sit down, you’ve got a lot to learn.

The people saying that (Dub and myself), are saying it from a dungeon perspective. Well, maybe Dub isn’t. But I could really care less about PvP.
