Hello Guild Wars 2 Community!

I am very excited to have purchased my deluxe edition of GW2! I have done some modest research, and most information or videos I have seen had made me very excited to try out this game!

Some things that made this decision very easy for me:

1) NO Monthly Subscriptions!!! Thank you

2) Weekly-Monthly updates. Great to see how much content was added for FREE. Again, these two things made the decision just that much more easier for me.

3) The combat. Good paced fighting and plenty of monsters to kill. The skills I’ve seen look very fun to play with

4) Wow, the sheer amount of players in a server looks amazing! And I’m really looking forward to these huge, epic, crazy fights with a ton of people taking down a demon! Wow that looks epic!

I’ve never played a subscription based game, and I don’t ever plan on doing so.

I am the type of gamer, who usually picks one game and goes all in, head first. I guess you can say I take my video games like a relationship, and I’m a one game type of guy

I would list my previous loving game obsession, but I don’t dwell in past relationships and I’m looking forward to this one

Any tips for a first time player of Guild Wars?

Welcome! The main tip is to go look at the Players Helping Players sub forum, and review the sticky thread at the top on If Only I Knew This (or similar title). Then post any specific questions in that forum as they come up during play.

Otherwise, have fun, explore, learn by doing, and learn to dodge when an attack’s coming

Welcome! I’m sure you’ll have a great time with the game.

Just a few tips, typing /wiki X in-game (X being whatever you want to know about) will automatically open the wiki page for that item, it’s really useful.

Also I’d for the most part avoid these official forums (this goes for pretty much every game out there), most of the people that come here are here to complain about one thing or another so it tends to be quite negative at times, don’t let it give you a bad impression.

Go with the profession that interests you the most. Necros are good for PvE, PvP and WvW (depending on build.)

You can test any profession (to see what it is like at level 80) by stepping into the Heart of The Mists (click on the crossed swords on the upper left of your screen.) Gear and weapons are free there (the up-leveled 80, and the weapons and gear will exist only in that zone. – you will revert to your character’s real level and PvE gear/weapons once you step back out.) It is a PvP zone that contains targeting dummies that will let you test different builds (specs) and check out damage, etcetera. Everthing is there in the lobby, which is where you land when entering. It is a safe zone. So have fun and experiment.

Good luck.

Take it easy and don’t burn out. Game is much more fun when you don’t try to rush max level. When you level up try lot’s of specs, learn how to dodge and try to learn play class right way. Remember gather everything because some low level mats are very expensive nowadays.

Welcome to the party, find a good, active guild that does what you want to do in game, some will literally do all aspects of game play from dungeons to fractals to Spvp to wPVP to event farming, to living story achievements etc. Don’t wait to level cap your first character to start a second, just switching between my main and alts changes the way the game plays and makes it more interesting. Also, Don’t make a mesmer for your first character.

Welcome to the game!

Some tips:

Try different classes
Playing different classes let you learn the game ever better and tells you if you like the class or not. In general Heavy classes are the easiest to learn and Light and Medium are more difficult(Elementalist and Engineer have alot of skills to learn)

However focus on 1 or 2 that you especially like
This will allow you to not get overwhelmed by trying to learn every class at the same time.

Enjoy your first character
Don’t bother running the champ train in Queensdale, makes the game pretty stale. Just explore, do hearts and personal stories.

Had a wonderful first night.

A very friendly gentlemen quickly messaged me in game because he saw my thread. He then proceeded to take me to the mist, the PvP place.

He put forth 3 challenges. That was to defeat two single enemies solo, then the last challenge was to fight the white/silver/clear mob.

I passed two out of three, failing on the mob. Not without putting up a decent fight.

Hopefully the rest of my time is as fun as tonight was

Like most MMOs, the game is only as fun as the people you find yourself with. The content you’ll eventually master, the people… not nearly so much, and that is where endless entertainment is found.

Any tips for a first time player of Guild Wars?

  • Learn to dodge.
  • Do your dailies every day. And hoard your laurels — they are a time-gated currency that are very hard to replace.
  • Hoard your karma. Should you decide to get a Legendary weapon, you’ll need about one million karma.
  • If an item is labeled “unique,” it means you are not allowed to wield two copies of it simultaneously on the same toon.
  • If you build siege and become stuck when it completes, swap weapons or type /sit in the chat box to free yourself.
  • For dungeons: do not pug in a party with more than 2 players from the same guild (if you don’t know them).
  • If you must do the above, be the first person to enter the dungeon.
  • If a player in your party has to leave, be aware that if you use the LFG tool to get a replacement member that your progress may be reset if someone merges your party by accident.
  • Slayer potions (you do +X% more damage to YYY mobs and receive -Z% less damage from them) actually give you +Z% more damage.

Lol, that’s how I started the first game – and lost my interest in it very quickly. Although luckily for you, necromancers in GW2 are a lot better for single player combat. I have an Asura Necromancer, she’s awesome.

Welcome to Gw2, there’s a thread for new players, and it’s full of useful info:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/New-Player-Outreach-Resources-Events-FAQs/first#post3468351

I’d say just read it fast, no need to digest everything in one go, just skim and head on to play. If you find yourself stuck, just type “/wiki <topic>” (without the quotes, and replace <topic> with any keyword/s like skills), for example

/wiki dungeon

So play, explore. Any server will be good for beginners, but many will say you can never go wrong with the commonly brought 3 servers [BG|JQ|TC].

I guess I’m a little late to the welcome wagon, but Welcome OP!

My suggestions are thus:

First – Try several class/race combos until you find one the ‘fits.’ Personally, I don’t think (for example) a human mesmer ‘feels’ the same as an asura mesmer. Yes, its the same class, it will have the same general style but there is still a different feel to the race. I can’t even begin to describe or explain in understandable words.

Second – Don’t rush your first character. This game is as much about the journey to 80 as it is about being 80, perhaps more so. Stop to smell the roses along the way.

Third – Learning to utilize kiting, dodging, and simply movement in general in combat is a necessity. Generally speaking if you just stand there, you’re going to die. Have some fun with it though. It’s definitely a learning experience.

Fourth – Don’t let others dictate your play. Asking for suggestions is wonderful; however, you should still try all the different weapons for your class. Play with the traits as you go. Find what works for you, what you enjoy. If its not the standard ‘cookie cutter’ that people expect, that’s perfectly ok. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Of course, if you find you like the cookie cutter builds too, that’s fine as well. Just so long as you are happy with your build and are enjoying your play. After all, it’s a game. Enjoyment is what it’s for.

Finally – Don’t hang out too much on here. It’ll pull you down rather quickly unless you’ve got a decent amount of steel in your spine (and a loud voice).

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Welcome.

Don’t read too much into the negative stuff here – best to play and enjoy the game and find out things yourself.

Regarding camera – you can use the promote skill target in the options menu – that together with autotargeting, and binding select nearest/next/previous enemy plus call/take target to comfortable keys will make life a lot easier.

When you sell stuff on the trading post, make sure not to pick the “sell to the highest bidder” option, but match the price of the lowest seller (the second option). It will usually get you more money, though you’ll have to wait for a while for the item to be actually sold (depending on the item it could be sold in a few minutes or it might take a few days – sometimes it won’t get sold at all, then you can take it off the TP after a while and either try selling again for a lower price, or salvage it).

I find this to be true for some things but not others, it mostly depends on the item. Crafting materials and salvage items tend to sell almost every time you “Match lowest seller,” however equipment is a bit tougher to sell when you don’t “Meet highest bidder.” As for blues (fine) and greens (masterwork), you can also salvage them for luck, which will increase your magic find, which improves the quality of your drops (you’ll be more likely to get rare and exotic loot with a high magic find). I also suggest you harvest everything you come across if you want some extra money (crafting materials sell pretty well; I do this myself). However, crafting materials are also obviously required for crafting, so whether you want some extra money or the ability to craft is entirely up to you (I personally only sell extra crafting materials that won’t fit in my collections).

As someone else said earlier, just enjoy yourself and don’t race to max level, there is so much to enjoy in this game (it’s not all just endgame).

Don’t listen to this guy. Ranger is one of my favorite classes.

As for Lion’s Arch (LA) on the 14th, it’s part of the living story. Basically, all hell is breaking loose in LA on the 14th and the city is going to take some serious damage and there’s most likely going to be a massive battle or a “run for your life” kind of gauntlet. There’s a video showcasing the living story event at Prepare for the Escape from Lion’s Arch! which can also be found in the news section on the main page of the Guild Wars 2 site.

[EDIT] I just realized, it’s not February 14th, it’s February 18th (I assumed the previous poster knew his dates, which I apparently don’t know either). Escape from Lion’s Arch starts on February 18th.

For newbies I think warriors, guardians, ranger and necros are all good classes to start with. You probably don’t want to start with an ele, mesmer or engie. Though I would recommend getting alts of those after you’ve leveled your main. I do love my dagger/dagger ele…it’s a very fun play style.
