Why does it seem like gear is still important in Guild Wars 2? Trying to find a max damage anything is near impossible unless you are rich.

Plenty of people on these forums fight tooth and nail claiming that Guild Wars 2 is not a gear grind. I beg to differ. This is not a cosmetic only game, if max damage items are hardly obtainable without vast grinding.

In Guild Wars 1, plenty of things were max damage. Everything was cosmetic.

So ether you:
-Get rich.
-Get rich/grind crafting.
-Grind Dungeons.
-Get a lucky, perfect drop.

I believe I am missing the part about Guild Wars 2 being a grind-free game.

Going from 1-80 leisurely-

--Completing 100% of all pve maps... LEISURELY
--Selling every drop I obtained
--Farming Every Node to Pop up
--Doing every story quest
--Light WvW

I’ve managed to obtain full berserker’s armor + weapons, all of my trinkets+gems, sigils+runes, the cultural tier 3 chest piece and a second beserker’s chest piece to transmute that cultural armor.

No vast grinds. I played at my own pace, taking my time. I think I’ve gone to orr 3 times after getting 100% only to farm nodes and do the jumping puzzles. Otherwise I stay in WvW and farm/kill other players.

I laughed literally when I saw a dagger called beserker’s destroyer dagger on the AH for 30g... when a normal beserker’s dagger (exact same stats) is only 2g.

Very nice. Just out of curiosity, how many hours have you put into the game?

Here’s the thing. The only time AWESOME GEAR matters is either in WvWvW or dungeons.

Both of which are doable without max gear. They’re easier without max gear but I’ve completed every dungeon on – level (albeit not easily).

I mean, end game gear, compared to other games, is ridiculously easy to get a hold of and a lot less necessary than other games.

It’ll take you a week at most to get the cheapest endgame gear. (Either doing dungeons or farming for mats). With glob and othet fcm being cheaper now (than when i got mine) they should be a bit easier now.

Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.

I have been playing, quite effectively I might add, in an all rare set. That’s right GREENS.

We aren’t even talking Elite, much less exotic. I regularly kill champs by myself. I have no issues in WvW and have NO problem getting my kills.

I had some Exotics, and a few rares, but I switched my spec up, and cannot find any Exotics in the specs I want, so Rares it is until I do. My Exotic/Elite set is sitting in the bank, waiting to be used if I ever choose to switch back, but my survivability has increased so dramatically, I don’t know if I will ever go back.

I don’t care for dungeons, in any game, this one is no different, so I’m not grinding those all day looking for gear, or doing anything else looking for gear. I am more than happy with my non-L33T gear until I do eventually find the “perfect” drop.

Max gear isn’t necessary. I haven’t had to grind for anything….

(Some of this may be due to the fact that I believe I’m running a rather unusual and unpopular build, on top of being an engineer, so I might be a minority lol. I’m a AOE Damage/support Bomber.)

Yep leveling to 80 and completing the maps on the way will give you enough gold for a full set of exotic gear. Though you would be equally good in rares really. No need to run any dungeons even, or do PvP.

Think of a time playing GW2 when you got a gear upgrade, and afterwards mobs were dying noticeably faster, like even just a couple of skill uses.

I have ~230 levels in the game on diff characters. Even going to exotic from yellow weapons at 80 didn’t seem dramatic. The only time it stood out to me was back in the starter zone.

It makes a big difference in pvp because all your stats are on the amulet, and it can be a huge swing. But aside from that, I know it matters, but not to the point I one-shot something that used to take a whole skill bar.

Those normal craftable exotics are affordable enough. Those sets that are out of the 7 will take more effort but should still be within reach. Their are expensive things but you shouldn’t need them to be effective. In fact when i was playing with my alt character at lv50+ now i just give it stuff it pick up himself i didn’t even bother to repair them.

I’d rather be able to afford multiple sets of equipment and get free trait respecs.
That way PvE content can be a lot more varied, as you can respec to tackle it.

It feels like in GW Anet knew where it was going and why it was attractive, but… I really like a lot of what GW2 does, it is what GW no longer does that feels like a huge sacrifice was made. Was it worth it.

Lol, my bad then. I’m used to a system where the colors go the other way and blue is the best gear lol. Anyway…. I wear all greens. My old set was almost all yellows with some oranges.

That brings me to ask. What is the different between Elite and Exotic then? Are they both orange? I know Legendary is red lol. Never mind, I don’t know where I was getting the Elite stat, that’s what was messing me up.

The best weapon in the game can either be crafted with 300-360 (6-7 dungeons) tokens from a dungeon or crafted for no more than 3g i believe.

Now, in WoW how many dungeons and RAIDS do you need to get the best weapon? A year of raiding you say? Oh…

Stupid quote system...

@Lance

My in game ’age’is 243 hours over 49 days which is about 4.9h/d (On this main character mind you)

Most of that is from doing 100% completions of maps as I went along, or running around in WvW. Some of it’s been accumulated sitting in game while reading the forums and/or RPing.

Gear is really important……i tried dungeons with blue and greens and got oneshot while doing nothing .-. some time after i got there in Exotic and didn t even die while i remained alone against 3-4 opponents (party died).

Btw i can be considered the most casual gamer ever, i play for fun, and i don t care to farm or anything (well i farm jormag for fun <.< when i can but never dropped anything good), but it took me a week to get my crafted lvl 80 exotic set…plus a weapon.

And i think i am one of the slowest out there <.<

Gw 2 may have some problems (expecially in dungeon difficulty balancing where lower levels are often the most difficult) but grinding is not one of them….unless you want estethic things like legendary weapons

You can try any other mmorpg and enjoy spend many months to get your max level gear…….

P.S. also there are even really fast (legit) ways to obtain gear from what i heard…

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Gear makes life easier but the point is that gear is not that hard to get in this game. It’s accessible to casual and hardcore gamer alike.

I am sort of in the middle of the two groups. I play a lot of hours (300+) but don’t spend a lot of time in Orr and only do a couple of dungeons etc.

Exotic level 80 gear comes as cheap as 2g a piece on the TP, sometimes even less. When I sold all the mats I gathered while leveling to 80 (I decided not to do crafting), I made over 10g. Just from the mats.

Honestly, it does take something to get it but it’s not that hard to do.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

Hey, so. I lied, and you can disregard part of this post. Managed ti find a competent team and it seems like it will only take a short time to get at least one set of gear, regardless of stats. Grind for crafting/other means is still a matter.

Managed to fit time in to do Twilight Arbor and it was significantly quicker than grinding in Ascalon Catas.

Ty Sin. And than you to other who pointed out that my previously doing AC was why dungeons felt grindy. Seems like AC has a lot of leavers/players who cannot work together. xD

I’m going to go ahead and close this post. Thank you all for your feedback. sorry for the bother.
