Grindiest MMO ever
That’s YOU though. You want to farm. Not everyone wants to farm. I personally hate farming. You can’t state that MMORPG’s are in such a sad state because YOU don’t like what’s happening. That’s presumptuous of you.
With that said, I agree that rewards are low. xD But it doesn’t detriment the gameplay for me, and I still enjoy it. That’s just me though
Please list other MMOs you’ve played. Then please list out the metrics you used to determine why this game is “the grindiest” (i.e. time required to get BiS for all equipment slots, time to reach max level.)
Then we’ll be able to have a serious discussion.
legendaries are semi hard to get but ascended is like candy at halloween, ive been running daily fractals for the past 3 weeks now and i have about 15 rings, not to mention all the excess laurels and guild commendations that are collecting dust, your problem is that you want it now and cant farm for them

your right, but farming is an optional thing that some ppl DO like to do, why alienate them.
FYI – Playing this game to complete it, SPvP, and WvW requires no grind whatsoever. In other words, I think you’re doing it wrong.
Pshhh, Anet don’t make grindy games.
Not even close.
Took me months just to get one level 50 in Daoc back in the day. T_T
I think I was 13 when I got the game in around November, I didn’t hit 50 until sometime during the summer.

Is this the only mmo you have ever played?
Play Lineage 2 and then we’ll talk.
Grindiest? You’re talking about going for expensive skin that has no stat increase. Are you sure you played other MMOs?
OP’s problem is he is setting his sights on a goal and doing the only thing he knows: Grinding loot.
GW2 offers SO many paths to getting gearred:
- WvW rewards (Cost: Killing other players)
- Shrines of the 6 gods (Cost: Karma)
- Dungeon rewards (Cost: Teamwork)
- Fractal rewards (Cost: More teamwork)
- Laurel Vendor (Cost: Patience)
- Crafting (Cost: Exploration!)
If any single option is boring, then pick another option! – A mixture of all the above will yield a varied diet of gameplay and provide all the stuff you need essentially for free
Garnished Toast
The grass is always greener.
Try to enchant gear in Neverwinter without spending money. A poster on their forums calculated that if one were to do all of the in-game activities that reward the correct currency each day, it would take 83 days to get one enchantment. This is a boost to stats.
In WoW, I farmed mats nearly every day and after 8-9 months had enough gold to buy 6 crafted Epic armor pieces that were not even BiS. As of right now in GW2 — about 9 months in — I could buy 58 BiS gear pieces and I have only farmed inefficiently and irregularly.
The only grind in GW2 is for a legendary weapon.
Seriously…there is no way to farm as every farm in the game gets removed. (except CoF) and every item takes an enormously long time to get. This game is so slow and grind driven that I’ve begun to miss gear treadmilling. At least something (even if it’s not great) drops in raids. I can’t understand why 50% of the mobs in the game drop NO loot. What a stupid stupid stupid system.
I’ve heard all this chatter about GW2 being best MMO of the year and such. If THIS is the best game then it’s really more of a commentary on the sad state of MMORPGs in the current market.
I’m all for putting the time and playing the game for rewards but at this point, the carrots (ascended gear, legendary weapon) are so far away that I don’t even find them motivating.
Hopefully ArenaNet can do something to fun up this game a little. Would it really be so hard to make playing a little less grindy and a little more rewarding??
WoW is grindier than this game by a wide margin, & WoW isn’t even all that grindy. TSW, SWTOR, WoW, & LotRO are all waaaay grindier than GW2. I loved LotRO, but that is one of the grindiest games I’ve ever played. I think your definition of grind is askew.
Adventure seeker on an empty street,
Just an alley creeper, light on his feet
A young fighter screaming, with no time for doubt
With the pain and anger can’t see a way out,
It ain’t much I’m asking, I heard him say,
Gotta find me a future move out of my way….
I give up on legendary.
The game suddenly become fun again.
I’m sure there are other achievement to do in the game. I found mine.
Fortunately I’m not that into pretty skin. I have a pet peave on convenient item though.

I agree with what you’re saying. I was just addressing the fact that the OP indirectly said this game sucks because of the farming nerfs. (With the comment saying if this game is game of the year, MMO’s are in a sad state). This is a false statement. He may hate it, but it doesn’t mean everyone hates it.
The only grind in GW2 is for a legendary weapon.
… and for Scrooge McDuck levels of gold. And I’ll just leave what someone can do with that to everyone else’s imagination.

its not grindy infact you can get 80 and full exotics and a legendary in a couple of hours.
the secret is called a credit card and blowing all your real money on gems, which in turn go into fake gold

Curious why you believe gold is useless?
Obviously hasn’t played FFXI. Even levelling in that game was a grind – go to such and such place and kill mobs for exp, and keep killing, for hours, and hours, and hours. I did that for 5 months to get my first top level character, next was easier so I did it in a couple of months instead but was still the same. Things have changed now however because levelling can be done in a day, but it’s sort of an exploit where you pay people in game to do kill everything really fast while you stand there (not fun but gets the job done).
Legendaries are hard you say? The “legendaries” in FFXI are basically required these days because they’re easier to get than they used to be and are BiS weapons by a long shot, although I think that’s changed and are almost BiS but haven’t been updated yet. Either way, to get them you have to play 2 hours everyday killing stuff over and over and over for at least 2 months in 1-3 different areas to get currency drops. You can buy the currency but it costs over 150 million, which is a lot by anyone’s standards. The only way to really buy that is to either do that currency grind but sell the currency instead and then buy back, do another activity which is essentially the same but for different currency and sell them, or buy gold/gil.
That’s the easy “legendaries” called relics, there are harder weapons to get which are on the same level but have different stats called mythics that cost around 450 million… In comparison this game is incredibly laid back and in no way a grind fest. I haven’t even started on doing bosses 600+ times just for a dagger that isn’t even the best, but there’s no point going into all that. GW2 is really no grind fest, its goals may be far out of reach for casual players with legendaries etc, but they were designed for the hardcore players and are for the skins, not to be the best. Everything else in this game is easy if you just explore, and by that I mean explore different ways to do the same thing, there’s usually more than 1.

Maybe I should’ve worded it better: For me, gold in extreme quantities is useless. If I have enough to use WPs and respec, both fairly cheap, I’m happy. Sure there are items I want to buy at times, and I do get them, but no excessive farming of gold is needed to get them. I guess it’s a matter of what everyone wants in the game. If you want a precursor or a very expensive unique weapon skin (Foefire) then yeah you need excessive gold amounts, but I don’t want any of those, so for me, gold is fairly useless. Getting max efficiency/stats is so cheap and easy…
There is grind for looks, and grind for stats, fortunately there is next to no grind for stats in this game. I’m happy that there is grind for looks, for those who want it, gives some reason for some players to continue playing.

Thanks for the reply. I was just genuinely curious, didn’t have an agenda for asking beyond getting to know the playerbase a little bit better. Thanks again.

If you are grinding in GW2 , then you are playing as if GW2 is a gear based game. It isn’t.
Don’t grind, just play and the rewards will be way better than simply getting loot. If it isn’t fun, then you don’t like the game.
I see this all the time. People still view GW2 as an “old school” MMO. GW2 is about ENTERTAINING the player, not about making them more powerful. This is why we have things like Living Story and temporary content. It is about having fun in a living, changing world. (at 80 you have the whole world to play in, not just high end).
GW2 ,isn’t a theme park MMO.
GW2 isn’t a Sandbox MMO.
GW2 is a Playground MMO. It’s simply about playing for fun.
I decided to go back to Lineage II Interlude private server for the summer. There at least when I try to farm mats for some craft, I know exactly where I can farm it and how and it is actually fun. In GW2 everything I do besides CoF is the wrong way of farming… and I am exhausted by this fact.
I think my original intent has been somewhat misinterpreted so let me clarify:
I do not think that I MUST farm. I just think that there isn’t a whole lot else to do.
I’ve done quite a bit WvW. It’s fun. But can I do it all day? No, it just doesn’t entertain me that much.
Fractals are quite a challenge at times but running the same set of small instances over and over often for random garbage loot: no thanks. At least grinders like WoW had set loot tables and eventually you would see the item you wanted.
GW2’s excessively random loot system ensures that my odds of finding an amazing item are the same whether it’s the first boar in Metrica or the last zombie in Orr: slim to none.
There are a lot of things to do in the game. And I’ve done most of them quite enough. I would like a shiny legendary cuz it seems like a GOAL to work toward but it isn’t really a test of skill or effort but rather an exercise in farming and grind.
When I really think about it my ill will towards the game of late is related to gems, the gem store, and the blatant efforts by ArenaNet or whomever to force the use of it. It seems that more and more the game is telling players to buy gold or learn to live without it.
Got a cool new skin for your armor? Guess what? You’re gonna need a special 80 only item to wear it and that costs gems or gold. Want a shiny weapon skin? Gems or gold.
I respect that someone has to make money on this game. But telling me its free to play then trying to sneak in as much pay to win as possible really chaps my backside.
So I guess you guys are right, I don’t have to have stuff. I CAN just play for the fun of playing. But if aimless, mindless, pointless wandering is the game, and this is game of the year: well…. you get my point
I respect that someone has to make money on this game. But telling me its free to play then trying to sneak in as much pay to win as possible really chaps my backside.
Explain this pay to win, what do you mean?
Pay to Win : Buying gear with RL money that gives you a power advantage over other players.
GW2 “version” of pay to win: Buying awesome skins for RL money, because the “goal” of GW2 is to look awesome, not to be awesome
It’s up to the player to ignore it or not. I learned to ignore it and just enjoy my game time.
Exactly that, they don’t sneak it in, you just have to ignore it. If you can’t ignore it then it’s kinda your own fault. You can’t blame ANet for selling items, they’re out to make money and yea some of their tactics are a bit controversial but it’s the same for any company. They are not forcing these items on you just using clever advertising and temporary content. I can make the same amount of gold that 800 gems can get you in a day if I do every world event and a couple of cof runs but it takes time and isn’t instant. If you want instant money then yea you have to pay real money for it.
I agree that there’s certain amount of grinding. For example if I need T6 materials, I have to go to lvl 80 zone, and kill everything since those materials are kinda rare. On the other hand, a nice addition was the laurel system, so I can now buy random materials for laurels. There’s also Mystic Forge, but in order to upgrade one tier of materials to another you need 250 or 50 materials of a certain type, and that feels grindy, and don’t get me started on getting ascended gear from the Forge.
Honestly, this is the only thing that I see as grinding, it would be a lot of better if you could buy those rare materials using karma or skillpoints. Sure, you would have to “grind” for them, but at least you can choose how you’re going to earn your skill points and karma, and almost whatever you do gives you karma and skillpoints, so I don’t see the problem.
Town clothes are GemStore only…
Why didn’t you complain earlier?
My guardian is realy cool IMO and I haven’t farmed anything, the hardest piece to get was the sword and I got that from enjoying The amazing SAB.
The stuff we get from Southsun atm is not what I wan’t atleast and even if I wanted it I know there is still some cool stuff I can get and will get in the future if don’t get my hands on a ticket.
