Hello everyone.

I started playin a month ago and have a lvl 80 Guardian, which I love to play very much. I have noticed that there aren’t many necro’s in pve, especially in dungeons. Im actually considerint m6 next character to be one. I also understand from some searching that Necro’s get criticism for some stupid reasons regarding playstyle in pve, mostly the dungeons.

But what I’m really here for is to find out how Necro’s and Guardians fare together in a party. If I use condition cleansing skills, and should it fall on a Necro, does that interfere with the mechanics of a Necro by removing stuff that je/she intends to use? Or is it safe to use those skills.

As a guardian I tend to stay in front where it is easier to heal allies( I’m the more supportive type), ocasionally falling back to heal up or support. It’s when I fall back that I wonder if I may mess up a Necro’s fight.

But as I said: sadly I have never experienced a fight with a Necro.

Thanks and sorry for the long post

Necros don’t have enough party buffing skills, that’s the reason they are not meta, their dps is fine.

No party Might stacking, no blinds (with low cooldowns), no fire fields, no blast finishers, no aoe condition cleaning (with low cooldowns), no aoe aegis, protection or stability. No projectile destruction or reflect, no party swiftness, no party healing, no aoe condition cleaning, no stealth, no party teleports.

Basically Necromancers don’t offer any support options for parties, and what they DO offer is on high cooldowns (well skills for example for blind and condition cleansing)

A Necromancer is very selfish, they can do lots of things, but only on themselves. That’s why they are not meta in dungeons.

Atm necro is not meta in pve. Its dps is too low

Reasons why necros aren’t welcome in pve:

- no offensive support for the party
- no deffensive support worth talking about
- mediocre dps (probably not the worst)

To add insult to injury:

- guardians are capable of high defensive support (exclusive of the proffesion) while dealing more damage.
- warriors: exclusive offensive and defensive support while dealing more damage
- elementalists: exclusive offensive support while dealing more damage
- thieves: some useful defensive traits (invis) while dealing more damage
- engineers: offensive and some defensive support, deals more damage
- rangers: exclusive offensive support, similar damage
- mesmers: useful mechanics to skip parts of dungeons, and defensive support in the form of reflects. Deals comparable damage

So any proffesion brings more utility than the necro, and on top of that almost any proffesion deals more damage. So much for a balanced game, uh?

If you really want to know why necro is bad, there’s a very fresh youtube movie with detailed explanation why this profession is terrible, especially in PvE:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcFmi1kQvik

If you don’t care about the meta and want to play for the sake of playing, don’t bother with this thread. Just play. One request – don’t join groups looking for specified speedrun zerk composition because you won’t fit there. This goes both for necro and your “support” (lol) guardian.

it’s not just a matter of meta. If you play a dps, you want to deal damage.

So you fully spec your necro and get the fanciest runes and sigils, and walk into this dungeon ready to wreck things.

And then an elementalist shows up, does a might stacking rotation boosting the whole party’s damage like crazy, casts an electric storm on the boss giving him 25 stacks of vulnerability, drops an icebow which a thief picks up, freezes the boss and while you stab the boss with your auto (dealing decent damage), thief and ele OBLITERATE the boss using just one skill.

Like i said, it’s not about being in the meta or not. It’s about being able to do your thing without looking ridiculous. I think we can all tolerate not being the best, but being so far away from the best is really depressing.

I dunno why you are trying to explain to me things I already know. This is also told in the link I posted.

And this is the matter of meta. Meta is control, support, dps and team composition. There is the reason why we want 2 eles, a warrior, a guardian and a thief. This composition can be swapped so e.g. rangers, engineers and mesmers have their place in meta too. However necro brings nothing to the table. This is why it’s supposed to be bad profession.

If he doesn’t want to be meta player, then he can play whatever he wants.

because you seem to think that people who don’t care about optimal performance will have no trouble playing with a trash profession.

in my time, i didn’t even think to re roll because necros weren’t part of the meta, but every dungeon run i did with meta players made me feel useless.

Your best sentence would be better put: ‘if he doesnt want to be a meta player and he doesn’t mind being useless and doing mediocre to miserable damage, then he can play a necromancer’

I’d say – let other ppl play how they want if they don’t mess with other ppl playstyle. This goes both for PHIW and meta players. This is only a warning for a new player. When I started this game with my guild we were trying to compose our party with healers and conditioners only to learn by ourselves how this game works. Now we’re full meta composition and we love it. Somehow I miss the first months of my gameplay when I was experimenting and learning this game. It’s forever gone.

I am one of those that don’t care what class or what type armor someone has. I like people in dungeon groups who are fun and not mean to others. Play what you like and find like minded people.

i agree with you two, but i also think it’s fair to warn the OP: you may even have fun with the necro, if you don’t mind being carried by your team all the time.

I don’t think anyone has really answered OP’s question?

To give it a shot: Necros can do some nice stuff with conditions that affect them. They can use them to increase effectiveness of their heal or transfer them to the enemy, Even if they haven’t slotted those skills or use those weapons they also have a large health pool so there shouldn’t be much need to condition cleanse a necro usually. That being said I doubt a necro would be angered by it either. I don’t believe many rely on it for their main gameplay, but I’m not completely sure about that.

If you plan on helping your party with heals you should also be aware that necros don’t recieve healing while in deathshroud, so in that case it’s wasted on them.

Wow, just wow. I am going to let it go for the most part, but I need to point out one thing.

If you play solo PvE a necromancer is a lot of fun and it is completely viable. The necro does not annihilate the enemy as fast as the zerker staff Ele, for example. But all the open content can be done perfectly fine with any class and necros are fun.

I’m with Scandi on this one . fun is more fun .

my necro would only benefit from the style of play you are suggesting . we could play together some time if you like . add me in game .

one of my guild mates will often play his necro while i am on guardian . he’s never mentioned my style interfering with his nocroyness .

what probably helps is none of us use build guides . we just use our own trial and error based on what we think is the most fun for our selfs balanced with effectiveness. in fact any time i go into the profession specific forum sections i feel like i’m playing a different , and better , game than every one else .

I have to defend Necro here, been a main Necro player for all MMO’s I have played since EQ1 in the late 90’s. And I understand each games ideology of necro is different. But the most important aspect of a typical MMO dungeon/fractal/raid group is not how fast or an exact DPS number, the most important thing is not dying on your teammates and expecting them to rez you, and ultimately failing. And a good necro player will sustain their life as long as any other class and still put out a healthy average DPS and be able to contribute to the overall goal which is downing the mobs. I understand there are speed runs and zerk groups out there but those are the outliers and the simple player groups are a mix of all types of players with different skill sets, who just want to get to the same goal of finishing the dungeon and getting gold and loot.

Trust me I know there are issues with the class, and they are not the best, I am not trying to change reality here. I just am trying to show that the strength of the class is that it really doesn’t go down in a hurry, and has some solid mechanics that help achieve the PvE group goals. And trashing it just because it doesn’t fit into a particular player mindset or playstyle seems a bit unwarranted.

Just my 2 copper…

Thanks Mercy, that’s what I meant to find out. Whenever I search all I see is Necro’s being flamed.

And thanks to everybody else for their input. Hawkeye, I’m with you on that. Are world bosses immune to fear? And I believe the fact that a Necro can consume so many conditions is a good thing for a team? The temptation to start a Necro was brought on by the way many people think about it.

Meh, make a necro and have fun with it.

I have a blast on both of mine and have successfully done dungeons with them. No biggie there.

Also, no one seemed to be complaining at the Vinewraith event when I rolled up in there with my support Guardian. The heals and condi cleanse were real. Oh yes.
