Guardian or Necro?

Okay, so I have two level 80’s, an Engineer and a Ranger and im going to level a 3rd. The two classes im torn between leveling are Guardian and Necromnacer. I mostly do wvw and both seem really viable for large scale group fights. My main problem is choosing between playstyles and visuals. After medium armor classes I tend to like light armors. If I go with guardian I will probably want to play him as a mage like caster. Is there any armors that look similar to something a battle mage wears? Also legendaries are a big concern of mine. I really like the legendary choices of the Guardian but the ones for Necro seem to be lacking.

Stat wise im a little bit concerned about the Guardian. I will probably roll a symbol healing build focusing on high healing power and toughness, will the low health pool of the Guardian be a problem in large scale group fights or would the tanky-ness of the Necro be a better choice? Im not really sure about what build I would use if a go with a Necro, any build suggestions are welcome.

Feedback would be much appreciated.

I find guards to be truly horrible in WvW.

You run so slow.... and then get zerg-slaughtered before most people, because you have no useful escapes... and then have to run back again....

forget that mess!

Necros.. hmm...

A staff necro with maxed-out condition damage is so-so in zerg pvp. On one hand, you add pressure. On the other hand, most people will only be mildly annoyed.

They killed the usefulness of epidemic a patch or two ago, and now you can’t cast it on people hiding on walls.

As for being "tanky" if you spec for regen and whatnot, your ranger is almost as tanky as a guard, and more tanky than a necro.

If you are thinking about being a dagger necro, just go thief. A tanky thief in knights/sodiers using his healing signet is better than any necro in the long run. Off-hand a pistol and you can tank all day long.

If you wanna zerg heal, roll an ele.

...as I think about it more, a D/D ele might be just what you are looking for. Very tanky, great heals, great for WvW. Yeah... do that.

The only way to play the engineer is to exploit it.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.

Not sure what you’re smoking but out of the two the necro is the slowest one. As for a dagger necro you are also incorrect. I think you’re just bad.

Guardian, hands down. With an Altruistic Healing build you are throwing out Boons on everyone around you while constantly healing yourself. A Necro can easily tag large numbers of people, but killing them is more difficult. A Guardian can tag, kill and survive. If you are concerned with longevity you should know that there are two types of Guardians – those that get up close and personal in order to help their allies by ensuring they are in boon range, and those that stay back. The latter never dies because they are never in danger, while the former will die as soon as everyone around him drops.

As far as the “tankiness” of the two classes go, health points are not the sole measure of surviveability. Guardians have a vast array of damage mitigation tools available to them. To give one example, a Guardian can easily go into combat and be unharmed by the enemy’s first 8 attacks through the use of blinds and blocks, and then they have almost constant heals and access to all Boons. A Guardian may have almost half the health of a Necromancer, but, even with equivalent Toughness, a Necro simply doesn’t have the abilities to survive as long as a Guardian.

Necromancers absolutely have their place in WvW. Their primary use is as offensive support, weakening the enemy by applying large numbers of conditions on enemies. Guardians are there to increase the surviveability of everyone around them and fill a defensive support role by supplying Boons and heals on their allies.
