Guesting on US server from EU not allowed?!?
It was always stated that guesting would be region locked.
we were lead to believe there would be NO regional boundaries at all, and there are plenty of OFFICIAL announcements by GW2 devs that this would indeed be the case, thus that you could guest to any region from any region
I wasn’t lead to believe that since they never official said anything of the sort. Please post any sources that you might have because I’ve never seen such a statement from the devs.
The two regions are separated by physical hardware…how exactly would you resolve this issue? It’s a shame that this is the way that it has to be but that’s just it, it’s the way that it has to be. Unless there’s a method out there that I’m unfamiliar with in which case I’d love to learn about it.
Nope. They’ve said that guesting between regions would have to make the character data move between physical servers or something like that and they’re not doing that.
“Because (different from a world transfer) we are not moving your character between data centers, you may only guest on worlds in the same region as your home world. Players on North American home worlds cannot guest on European worlds or vice versa.”

i agree its a shame but its always been stated that this would be the case, as the other players have said above.
Tis only what you can do for all
Well I see now from the more recent stuff that they made it more clear that Guild Wars 2 would end up being pretty region restricted actually, which is too bad. As this was one of Guild Wars’ biggest features for me. Since I have many friends in both Europe and USA.
As for what lead me to believe such, well it’s the more older stuff:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-world-of-choice-the-regions-of-guild-wars-2/
https://twitter.com/GuildWars2/status/182439559144022016
Those two and more, just comments mostly from devs earlier on that Guild Wars 2 players could play together across region, but they were probably thinking more about the fact you could transfer to any server region and not so much about the guesting.
What was said aside. It is too bad they decided to go for split datacenters. In all the years that GW1 was out the shared datacenter was never an issue, I don’t see why it suddenly has to be made into a big deal for GW2.
Perhaps one day they will get their sanity back and merge the datacenters? Who knows… Until then, no playing with my US buddies and probably the last GW game I buy then……
I remember a huge player uprising a couple of years ago on guru, when Anet first said the regions wouldn’t have crossover and the players really got up in arms. Anet said, at that time, they couldn’t promise, but they’d see if they could do it. In the end, after testing, they decided they couldn’t. It’s unfortunate, but they did say originally they couldn’t, and the most they said after was that they’d try.
Unfortunately if you haven’t been following the game as long as I have, you might have missed the first outcry about it.

Yeah, I haven’t been following much, just the bits of news here and there thus why I missed the outcry about it.
There is a way though, they could have gone for a similar setup as on GW1 and thus have a shared datacenter for all regions. Which as they have already stated that is the whole reason you can’t guest cross-region, as they instead opted to go for split datacenters out of a fear of the datacenter going offline/crashing.
I just got the game and am pretty annoyed about this too. If you know what to look for it’s pretty clear, but I bought this game on a friend’s recommendation and they said I could “guest” in their game, not realizing I would be in a different region. I play with EU friends and US friends (or rather I was hoping to) and to be honest I think this is an extremely poor limitation. I can see why they wouldn’t want to migrate data between two servers all the time, but I too don’t really get why they went for two separate data centers. Even if that was a reasonable choice, I don’t see why I couldn’t at least have two entirely separate characters, one on each world/server. I wouldn’t mind playing different characters with different groups of friends that much. What is ridiculous is that I would, at this point in time, have to buy an entire second copy of the game and register in the US region. The fact that that is possible and works well voids most of their arguments. Pretty upset, and probably getting a refund if there are no signs of this changing soon.
Yeah it sucks. One of the best features about GW1 was being able to play with anyone from anywhere in the globe. My brother works overseas and GW1 was how we stayed in touch for years.
I’m sure it is a technical limitation of some sort, or a contractual one. But whatever the reason the result is a very huge step backwards, like much of GW2.
This is an area where I’m supremely disappointed in Anet. One of the amazing things about MMOs is the ability to play and communicate with anyone anywhere in the world. That’s how it should be! We shouldn’t be sectored off from each other. It’s one of the reasons I loved GW1—I could just change to international servers and play with players in Germany or Korea, or wherever. It’s great to be able to play and learn from each other, and experience new cultures and play styles. I’m beyond disappointed that in GW2, we have been roped off. There are things that I really love about GW2, things that are new and mold-breaking, but when it comes to the community, GW2 has missed the point. We cannot communicate or play with each other at all and we don’t have guild halls to hang out in—two things that an older, less technologically advanced GW1 game implemented.
Please Anet let the game be massively multiplayer! Let us players from everywhere take down that pesky Zhaitan together!
This feature was indeed one of Guild Wars 1 strongest selling points, and I have so many friends that switched from WoW to GW1 just for that very reason. As they didn’t like that they had to have seperate game copies for the different regions, while in GW1 you could even use the same character worldwide and play with ALL your friends and family worldwide.
The reason for “oh the data server might crash, so we made 2 so at least 1 region would be up while the other is down” is pretty silly to me. Especially since in all the years I played GW1; I only experienced the dataserver crashing one time…
Some times developers are foolish to turn their backs on the things that made them so successful… what’s next? Guild Wars 3 subscription based???
I’m just saying, it’s not such a far fetch to me, and yes, that is how angry I am about this.
GW didn’t have the requirement of having a lot of people in combat in the same zone.
Hello,
