Sorrow’s Furnace – Commander/Officer
Kabal of the Righteous [Seed]
I noticed in this reddit thread that Dulfy posted some information about her experience with Guild Trek and the rewards obtained related to Guild Commendations.
Which she also illustrated on her site with the Guild Trek section.
“Guild Treks do not reward any Guild Commendations.”
So my question is, to dev or anyone that knows, is this functioning as intended?
Based on the Flame and Frost update information specifically about the Guild Missions it lists that “These [2 Commendations] can only be earned once per week per guild mission type.”
Is Trek not considered a valid type for some reason? If this is functioning as intended will Rush, Challenge, and Puzzle also not reward 2 commendations per type? Are we limited to basically 2 commendations per week forever?
If someone has information that this is not working as intended, I can create a post in the bug forum, I’d like to have confirmation beforehand though.
Thanks.
Don’t bother, i’ve made multiple threads and posted in multiple forums begging the devs to please give us an explanation on how guild comms are supposed to function. They have completely ignored the issue. I don’t think they actually thought about it much before they implemented it and they are now scrambling to come up with some reasonable explanation as to why we should grind 6 weeks for 1 item.
Ah lame, the forum search sucks then, I couldn’t find any other posts inquiring about it. We really do need an explanation though, lack of clarity isn’t fun or entertaining for anyone when it has nothing to do with exploration as opposed to equating where time in game should be spent.
Sounds more like a bug…

I agree, but unfortunately (and maybe I missed something obvious as I looked it over) I couldn’t find any official information one way or another, the wiki statement doesn’t seem to be sourced.
From the Wiki:
These rewards can only be earned once per week per guild mission type. For example, completing 2 guild bounties will only reward one set of rewards, but then completing a guild trek will be rewarded with another set.
So based upon this information from Arena Net’s own Wiki – not receiving any commendations from the Guild Trek is a bug.
Arena Net – Why u no luv Guild Trek commendations???

That wiki is written by players. It was just assumed that you would get 2 comms per mission type. No one thought Anet was crazy enough to make us work 6 weeks for 1 item. There was never any actual source for that, it was just assumed to be common sense.
But now it looks like we were completely off base.

That’s also an assumption as well, with no verification :P. Guild Missions were bugged when they were first launched, it isn’t unfathomable that another bug got past or was introduced with whatever they fixed after the first patch. Clarification is definitely needed here.
In one of the pre-patch infos there was something about treks not giving commendations (because they are so easy, or something). Not sure how that works now, however.

Do you bychance have a link to source that information? It would be greatly appreciated.

I can’t actually see them spending the time and resources to make large scale group content that doesn’t reward anything because it is so easy…
This has to be a bug because if it isn’t..well then I just shake my head.
hi,
we just unlocked guild trek and we cant/wont understand why guild trek will not award you with guild commendations!
We, as a small guild, would really appreciate that guild trek will also award you with commendations!
Any news or updated information regarding this topic?!
thx in advance!
The problem with trek is that of deciding who to reward. The first person on site closes that location, does only the first person get a reward or the entire guild online at that time? Badly implemented, but I am not happy with the entire guild activities implementation anyway.

If it required near-constant play for 6 weeks straight, grind would have been the right word. Given that it requires 15 minutes a week, grind is a dishonest term for the argument your trying to make. I’m giving you a second chance.
Treks are a lot easier than a lot of the other missions. I’ve always assumed that’s why they didn’t reward people the same.
My guild would never be able to complete a tier 3 bounty but we’ve never failed a tier 3 trek.
Then the question is: why is the Bounty the first unlocked Guild Mission? Shouldn’t starting with Treks be a better design?

Yes, I agree that this is probably the main reason they don’t award commendations. The allocation of a ‘reward chest’ for this type of mission would be tricky. If as a guild you have a range of players with restricted access to some maps, whilst others may have full world exploration, it would be difficult to ensure that everyone participating gets a chance to interact with a trek location to get their chest. By the time you’ve organised who is going where to trigger which location you will be running out of time.
Also, it excludes guld members who reside on other servers, as they cannot see or interact with the Trek points when they guest over to the host server.
All of this does beg the question why these are part of the guild mission catalogue, apart from the inital co-ordination this activity is largely a free for all with very little opportunity or need for group tactics or communication. We only run them for the small amount of merits that goes towards unlocking the later stages. Once we have finished building Guild Puzzles we will probably not run treks again – and they are really expensive on way point costs for members when they get nothing ‘rewarding’ in return.
Then the question is: why is the Bounty the first unlocked Guild Mission? Shouldn’t starting with Treks be a better design?
I believe treks are in there to help people unlock the higher content, something to break up bounties, which can get a bit of the same old thing. I prefer treks to bounties, because there’s no prescouting to do them.
Actually I’m not all that happy with the way the guild missions were unlocked anyway, but that’s another matter. The only thing we don’t have unlocked now is puzzles.
Treks don’t award commendations because they
1) Are quite easy, especially once you become personally familiar with a lot of spots
2) Are almost individually completed, meaning assigning rewards would be difficult and exclude huge swaths of the guild even if they spent the whole time helping.
With everything unlocked you get 6 commendations per week (an ascended accessory every 2, if you look at it like that).

Personally I refuse to use the term “work” for something I do completely for fun (now, if I was paid to play the game… )… that said, you can get up to 6 commendations a week, 2 for guild bounty, 2 for guild challenge, 1 for guild rush and 1 for guild puzzle, which means that if you’re after the ascendeds (that are the most expensive item offered for commendations), you can get one every 2 weeks if your guild has unlocked all the missions.
And if you’re like me and going after the weapon skins (so far got staff, GS and shield, not sure whether to get another one next or start saving for the ascendeds already), then you can get a 1 hand weapon a week, or a 2 hands one and a 1 hand one every 2 weeks. Doesn’t really sound unreasonable for me.
And as for the reason why guild trek doesn’t reward commendations, IMHO, first I think because it’s very easy to do, and also because unlike the other missions, doesn’t reward everyone that participates. For guild bounty and challenge, for example, everyone that helps attacking or defending get a participation. For guild rush whoever crosses the finish line gets rewarded. When it comes to guild trek, however, only up to 20 people would get rewards, whoever interacts with the trek icon, which is why I think it rewards the guild itself (guild merits and influence) but not the individuals. Plus how would the game track participation other than interacting with the icon?. If the event ends before you manage to get to one, for example, how does the game know you’re in an area because you’re just playing there, or because you were heading towards one of the icons?.
Imagine the drama that would cause if it awarded commendations, and you’re heading for a hard to reach place for one of the guild trek objectives and find that a guildie clicks on it just before you get there and had no time left to go to another spot…. and that probably that guildie would feel the same if you were the one that got there first and he hadn’t got his commendation yet either. Not exactly a good way to promote friendship and teamwork within a guild, which is what the guild missions are supposed to be about.
