Q:

So I have read the rules and “Eligibility”. So I just want to make sure I have this clear. If your county is not on that list, like say, New Zealand or Australian, there is no point in even putting pen to paper as they say in the post “Entries that do not meet these requirements, no matter how good, will be disqualified.”

So there is no point, right?

Yeah I’m from NZ and didn’t see my country there. The guidelines go on for centuries anyway, so I won’t be bothering even if they did include us.

I was hoping it would be simple. None of this transparent background required or anything (wouldn’t know how to do it anyway, and I ain’t reading a whole bunch of stuff and learning photoshop 101, just to put in an entry).

I think Anet would probably have more participants if it wasn’t so tech-unfriendly. Just let people send in their designs regardless of size or lack of computer skills. It’s the concept that matters. Not whether it has a see-through background or the exact size they require. Though I guess they only want pros who know how to do all that computer stuff to enter so… that’s me out of the competition anyway.

Good luck to the rest who can enter and follow every guideline and technical aspect of it. At this rate with all the requirements (see through background, specific sizes, being a pro at Photoshop or any other digital design program etc.), this isn’t even going to be a possibility or a thought for me so… cya and good luck.

kitten, I didn’t even look at that. I can ignore the announcement now.

To answer the question: correct.

Looking forward to seeing what people put out though.

One of the reason the country could not be there is some laws in the country itself. In the case of Quebec, every contest like these’s need to pass into government hands, which most company don’t want to work on. NZ might be one of these’s country where paperwork is too complex for a contest like this.

This sucks, NZ and Aus are probably just left out because their servers only specify NA and EU.
I think it’s probably a case of just forgetting/ not caring but who knows. I’m really bummed about it, it’s not the first time NZ/ AUS have been left out of competitions. And as an artist it’s just really like urrrrgh. anet why u do dis and break our hearts. ):

Zaoda.1653: They probably are making this contest as tech-unfriendly, as you’re suggesting, because just an idea isn’t enough. They’ll be not evaluating pieces of fan art, but emblems that must fit with other emblems in Guild Wars 2. Maybe that’s not obvious to you, but stuff on paper almost never look the same on the screen. After drawing your idea, you need to clean it up, maybe vectorize it, color it accordingly and whatever else they’re asking to (I didn’t look it up, I can’t take part in the contest so meh).
So, yeah, more people could join the contest if Anet wasn’t asking for all this technical stuff? Of course, but with that the winning contestants would have no guarantee that their original idea would be represented as they wished, because fine-tuning these paper drawings into digital designs is incredibly subjective.

Galyr.3519: Yes, it is a reason, but I don’t believe that’s apliable to this case. Entire continents were left out. Absolutely no country from South America was listed, not even Mexico.

Kythrie.7653: I agree with you, unfortunately. I’m from Brazil, so I’m used to not be allowed to participate in these foreign contests. But it was a bit weird not seeing Australia listed. If they’re indeed restricting it to NA and EU it’s disappointing, really. Just the other day they were hosting a test pvp tournament exclusive to South America…

But that’s my point – I don’t know how to do ANY of that, and it just seems wayyyy too complicated for the average Joe Blog like me :-/ I understand it should look all nice and pretty and all, but not many of us have the computer/photoshop skills to do everything, and most of us, I would say, would LOVE to participate, but simply can’t because of the points mentioned :-(

I see where you’re getting at, Zaoda. But they’re asking all this technical stuff to make things easier for them, and make things less frustrating to whoever wants to take part. :b

If you could join the contest (D:) you’d have more or less a month to learn the basics of photoshop/whatever to create your art. Considering they’re not asking something out of this world and are actually giving lots of examples for you to follow AND that you can use freeware software to make your emblem, it’s perfectly viable. That is, as long as you’d consider learning just to enter this contest.

It could also be down to a country’s laws as it pertains to contests and what not as to why some countries aren’t allowed.
