Guild Emblem contest - problems uploading
I have this problem too. My .zip file containing the .psd is 44.8MB, but I was told it exceeded the maximum size. (It would be nice if I had some way of finding out what the maximum size is!)
I assume this means it didn’t get uploaded, but I’m not sure if I should try again, since the rules say that identical submissions will be disqualified and I don’t want to ruin my chances in case it got through the first time. I don’t really know how to get the .zip smaller anyway.
I don’t think the upload was succesful if it says the file is too big. It would be kind of a bummer if multiple people would be disqualified for only trying to upload their entry. Like I said, I hope they fix it. I’ll wait a while for them to fix it and otherwise I’ll look into the other option.
Yeah, I decided to go ahead and resubmit it. The DIY format is much smaller so it got through fine this time.
I nearly added a readme to the zip explaining that my original submission was too large and to please ignore it if it did get through anyway, but I decided not to include it in case that somehow hurt my chances. I’m too paranoid for my own good. :/
Nevermind, I’m going to get disqualified anyway. The instructions mentioned that the background colour should be black or transparent, but that transparent was preferable, so I gave all of my files transparent backgrounds. It’s only now that I noticed they wanted the masks to have black backgrounds. I guess transparent only referred to the emblem itself. I’m such a kittening idiot.
Here is some information for you about uploading files for the Guild Emblem Contest.
If you are having difficulty submitting a .ZIP file (which seems to arise most often with PSD files) then please consider one of these two alternatives:
- You may wish to submit your entry using Option 2, the “D.I.Y./Do it Yourself” option. This means you will need to provide a .ZIP with the required files. Please review Option 2 in the rules and guidelines for more information.
- You may upload your entry onto a platform or host of your choosing, as long as it is free and does not require the purchase of any tools or software to function. If you do this, then send us a link that will allow us to download your entry. The link should be sent via e-mail to forums@arena.net using “Guild Emblem Contest” as the subject line.
If you choose the second listed option, please be sure to include the following details in the e-mail, in addition to the link:
- Your in-game display name with the numbers (example: Name.1234), or, if you don’t own a Guild Wars 2 account, your first and last name.
- A contact e-mail address. This may be the e-mail address that is associated with your Guild Wars 2 account or a completely different e-mail.
- Your country of residence.
I hope this information helps you. Let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing your entries!

Good to know that. Thanks for sharing the tip, Sin.

Does it have to be a .zip? WinRAR (RAR5) and 7-Zip (7z) have far better compression ratios.
For example, the entire templates/guide file is 325 MB as a zip. It’s only 5.5 MB as a 7z and 43 MB as a RAR5. A single temple (61 MB) is only 3.5 MB as a 7z and 4.5 MB as a RAR5, but 45 MB as a ZIP.
Anyone can easily get 7-Zip (it’s open source). If it’s allowed, that would be a much simpler alternative and potentially save a lot of bandwidth.
Are we using smart objects? the template is to size… If so rasterize those suckers before submitting. Also, delete or merge unused layers, for heavens sake!
Getting “not allowed to connect” when sending a message to forums@arena.net.
Anyone know when they will announce winners or post the submissions? I’m very curious to know the results and see the competition.
