Hey, I recently bought Guild Wars 2 (Having tonnes of fun so far) so that a couple of friends and I could get together to play. The game seems pretty free form with the random events but when my friends and I reach high levels we may not be able to log on and play at the same time (University and such), so what is the importance of having/being part of formal guilds? Advantages and such? Useful in PvP but not in PvE?

Thanks in advance, complete noob here.

Guilds are the only way you can earn guild commendations, a game currency used to purchase desirable items including ascended accessories and guild-only weapons and banners. Guilds can also provide you with many buffs such as karma or gathering.

What he said. Plus, guild offers a source of “feeling you belong”. In our guild, the guild is more for helping each other, ask questions around, run around with, or just chat around, and also share our guild bank to everyone as their temporary storage.

The only perks are the guild commendations and constant buffs like %increase on gold, karma, etc. If you like to wvw, it’s nice to have a guild that focuses on it. If you like to play dungeons, it’s nice to have familiar people to play with. If you’re trusted enough, you have access to a guild vault. You can join up to 5 guilds and leave at will so there’s really no reason not to join one.

For me the main appeal of being in a guild is having a group of like-minded people I can talk to no matter where I am and what I’m doing.

If I need help figuring out a vista I’ll ask my guild, if I want to get a group together for a dungeon I’ll ask my guild, if I’m bored and want to start a discussion on whether kittens are actually suicidal or just stupid but don’t want to stop exploring the seemingly empty map I’m on I’ll use guild chat.

If I was in your position I’d try to make sure you and your friends all join the same guild, but join an existing one rather than form your own so that if you’re on at different times you have other people you can play with, but if you are on together you can play together, and include your guild mates too.

@ the OP:

Only you can decide whether joining a guild is for you. Yes, there are perks (some like them, some don’t care) and yes, it saves you from PUGging things, but in general, guilds in this game a more social than anything else.

There are some strictly WvW or Dungeon guilds, but with the ability to join more than one in this game, you can do both! Check out the Guild Recruitment forums.

Have fun!
