Back when my friends and I used to play Minecraft, one of our favorite things to do was to frequently create new worlds and thus, new buildings. However, after a while, this became less and less fun, until my obsession with playing every game on the hardest difficulty kicked in; after a long time of pestering them, my friends reluctantly came with me to play on the Hardcore difficulty. For those of you who don’t know, on Hardcore mode in Minecraft, a few new effects kick in:

  • You can die from starvation
  • Enemies are stronger than ever before
  • Once you die, you cannot respawn and must delete your world.

We tried this a few times, and, not being the best Minecraft players, I don’t think we ever were able to defeat the Enderdragon. (Darn you lava!) Nevertheless, we had fun, and even after one of us died it was exciting to cheer on the rest of our teammates in their attempts to avenge us.

Years later, here I am closing in upon my seventh character creation. Since I choose to only play humans (I have tried out the other races and can’t enjoy the animations/armors) leveling has become quite tedious as I have played through the human areas several times, and almost have the personal story dialogue memorized. In search of a way to spice things up this time around, I recalled those days and nights I spent with my friends in Minecraft and various other games, and thought I could bring the tradition over to Guild Wars 2. Taking inspiration from Minecraft and several other games, here are some of the rules I came up with:

  • Death is permanent. If you die, you must delete that character. Going down and rallying is okay.
  • No use of experience scrolls
  • Adding to no use of experience scrolls, no use of the account or guild vaults to gain items through your other characters. In addition, acceptance of items from other people throughout the run is not allowed.
  • To sum up the above rule, just don’t accept any help from your other characters/friends.
  • No waypointing is allowed. Use of Asura gates is okay.
  • No use of the trading post is allowed.
  • Since most of the usable armor will come from monster drops/renown hearts, in the case of renown hearts, go by general honor rule not to use more karma than you’ve earned on that character. Emptying out karma before beginning this is not expected.
  • Crafting is allowed, but since vault use is not, materials will need to be held in the inventory, and not come from materials you have gathered on your other characters.
  • and possibly many more! I’m just listing out what comes to mind at the moment.

Whew. That’s quite the list of rules.. challenging ones at that. Challenging enough to know that I will most likely never complete a run of this by myself. And now, we finally get to the point of this post! Since the fun of those Minecraft days came from playing with friends, I am posting this to know if anyone is crazy enough to attempt this with me. Here are just some thoughts that come into play when thinking about the group dynamics of a run like this.

  • Obviously, if someone spends a lot of time on a character and then dies on it, I don’t really expect him to delete it. Of course, I will, but not doing so is understandable, and I don’t think it’ll be looked down upon.
  • On that note, if somebody does die, they are no longer allowed to aid the people who are still alive.
  • Mailing and crafting could come really in handy. Maybe we could have people specialize in different disciplines, and mail each other the materials required to make each other armor.
  • Reviving will save a LOT of people.
  • Having people be different races will separate players in the beginning, but as the story progresses, everyone will come together in the end.
  • If you want to stay alive, it would be best to play with a few other people who are also doing this challenge. We might want to organize times where everyone logs on, parties up, and works together to progress through the story and level up our characters.
  • This would be cool to meet new players, new friends, and possibly people will even form a guild together.
  • And much more! The party dynamic to a run like this will change more things than I can list.

So, at this point, I’m pretty much rambling. This threads purpose isn’t to advertise this as something that will happen, but just to see if other people are as crazy as me and want to join me on this ridiculous challenge. If you’ve read this much, thanks! And now, for the TL;DR

Who wants to level a new character and complete the personal story under a set of rules that pretty much spell out certain failure?

Anything to make this kitten game more challenging. I love Gw2 but I cant get myself to log on for more than 10mins because there is just no challenging content. Wurm is not a challenge, before anyone goes there. It is a challenge for a large group of players but if each of those players knew what to do for the fight it would be a walk in the park.

What gw2 is lacking, BIG TIME, is challenging content and good rewards for rish and time spent doing certain content. For example, Foefire’s Essence. Why is this weapon locked behind the MF? In almost any other MMO you would have to do the hardest dungeon or a challenging quest line to get a weapon like this. In gw2 it is all about gold. You want Volcanus? Farm 500g. You want Wall of the Mist? Farm 150g. This is just B.S.

A huge part of why I dont play gw2 as much as i want is because everything revolves around gold. There is nothing in this game that shows you are good with the mechanics other than the mini liadri or w.e her name is. Other than that, if you see someone with Foefire’s Essence you think " Woow this guy farmed or bought a lot of gold". There is nothing that makes someone say, " Woow this guy is really good at this game".

i would enjoy a hardcore mode but there are the changes i would make

experience scrolls cannot be used BUT can be forged into a hardcore experience scroll to level up (this would be expensive and help the economy use up items)

you can us the TP, if u want to buy an item, die and lose it, thats more than ok by me its good for the game as a whole as it uses up items

however your dye and wardrobe DO NOT transfer over , so u gata unlock things on this character seperatley

there has to be unique rewards for this mode, like rare items only available from this mode that DO transfer over

you should have access to your bank, again, losing items you buy is good for the economy

As soon as I get my Necro to 80, I will definitely give this a go.
Sounds like a good idea.
And, if for any reason I die before 80, I will absolutely delete the character.
Even if I’m 79 with one kill to 80.
It’ll be a fun challenge.

I think the OP intended this as more of a contest/challenge than an actual game mode.

This. The honor rule coming into effect is cool and I want this to stay between a set number of people who all start at the same and watching the numbers dwindle. And I’m sure some would write down intense/funny/sad moments on the forums for others to read.

For some reason I recall a news story about a guy that committed suicide when his character died because he had to start all over again and that is why most MMOs don’t have that setup. At least not from the initial start. I’ve heard of it being an unlockable mode though.

But seeing as how this is an honor system challenge, I’d at least keep up with it here at the forums.

If you die in game, you die in real life. Hardcore.
