Guild Wars 2 Should Go Free2Play
This never happes.
The arenanet is company, can you tell me why they should give their hard made product to someone for free?
Yes there are free to play mmorpgs, but they had low developing costs and anyone would even buy them money.
Guild Wars is on pair with the best pay to play mmorpgs there is no reason to go free to play ever. And no .. Arenanet would never benefit from this ..
Players that are not willing to buy game for money WONT ever spand money on gems. So what Arenanet have from this? Just more bots and more loaded servers.
You would see 100x more bots, gold sellers, trolls, etc.
Planetside 2.
What is Planetside 2 besides one big persistant FPS WvWvW? GW2 has that PLUS dungeons, sPvP and more. Different gameplay modes to suit a diverse community.
So because you say guildwars 2 specialises in nothing its better than any other MMO that focuses on something?
Guild wars 2 > EVE because EVE doesn’t have dungeons and suit everyone?
No, whether you like it or not there are good F2P MMO’s out there that had a development budget comparable to guildwars, which was the point of my post.
What guildwars has is a diverse and very fragmented community at the moment.
If guildwars perfected dungeons, SPvP and WvW then I would agree with you, but as it stands at the moment its pretty much sub-par in every regard, only reason WvW is successful is because they literally have 0 competition for that kind of gameplay atm.
Please re-examine the little illogical interpretation spin going thru your head when you wrote that. The fact that the focus of one game is but only one of many other focuses in another game does not imply one is better than another. The main point is that Planetside does not need to split as much resources over various different gameplay modes than GW2 thus GW2 would probably require more revenues to maintain and improve beyond initial developement. You can’t seriously support a F2P model using ‘Planetside 2’ as an example when the circumstances between PSide2 and GW2 are so different.
Do you have any idea the point you are arguing anymore?
Planetside 2 was not an MMO with cheap developing costs, which was the point of my initial post.
You are right though, guildwars 2 requires more revenue to maintain and improve now because they went the PvE progression grind route.
They are different yes, no kitten.
However I will iterate this again for you, the poster I was responding to said there are no succesful F2P MMO’s with a decent sized development budget, which planetside 2 contradicts this.
What point are you trying to argue exactly? I don’t think gw2 should be a f2p game I don’t have the faintest idea why you are even trying to argue with me.
There you go spinning again. Lets requote the original post by Dogblaster:

Now tell me where exactly does wise Dogblaster state or imply:
Quote nofo:
“there are no succesful F2P MMO’s with a decent sized development budget…….”
All I saw from the forum post is your simple response of “Planetside 2”. In context of this thread’s topic, people would take this as a counterstance of Dogblaster’s rejection of the F2P model thus I responded. Had you made your own opinion clear on the matter than just stating a game (i.e." actually, Planetside 2 is a very decent F2P MMO with a decent developement budget, but it is an exception on the market"), there be less confusion.
Let me illiterate myself: get your head out of the spin and back on topic.
I hate F2P MMO in the majority. Those few gems that actually work aren’t worth comparing to GW2 for all the reasons I’ve stated before.

Planetside 2 is but one of the free to play games doing just fine (d&d, lotr, swtor, champions, etc). I will say this however about the item shop in gw2. It is already extremely similar to many shops found in other free to play games. With perhaps the exception of no actual legendary/exotic whatever rank gear for sale. I do expect them to be heavily considering it as the shop is already in place but not so soon after release. Keep in mind tho once sales reach the drop point having income flow in through item shop will be a temptation they wont resist. The whole fractals upward progress thing is a good example of a lacking will.
I hope this never happens
and your reason?
Free game hoppers tend to be the bottom of the barrel. There is a lot more incentive to not get your account banned when you’ve paid for it. Free games tend to be a bit more rampant with ban evasion as there’s nothing to lose if your account is banned. You just <I’m not going to post instructions but it’s simple>, roll out a new account, then get right back to it.
There’s nothing to lose. That’s why you see botting, scamming, gold sales, flaming and other crap on a larger scale in free-to-play games. The pay-for-access door fee is a quality-of-life thing, even if it’s a small one.
Men of Science [MoS] – Tarnished Coast
I strongly disagree.
Anet is not in a financial hardship, nor will they ever be with this game. They have made plenty of money to recoop development costs, and have a large enough bank to provide ongoing support. The gem shop is there to continue to keep the bank large. I can speak for others as well that the gem shop does indeed make them money because we do spend money on the game routinely.
While i doubt its anytime soon keep this in mind.. the game launched with an item store.

Guild Wars 1 had an item store too. Guild Wars 1 never went free to play. I don’t understand your point.

This is possibly the worst suggestion anyone has ever made about anything. By making the game free Anet doesn’t benefit so why would they do it. If you think 60 dollars is too much for an MMO with over 100s of hours of content then consider that 6 hour games with repetitive gameplay often routinely sell for the same price. Seriously though why do you want the game to be free, do you not want Anet to make money.
Guild Wars 2 wouldn’t even be as it is if it weren’t for all the income… All of the f2p games that I have played cannot compare to GW2.

You guys seems to make the same argument that has already been rebutted. If GW2 goes f2p, how exactly does ANet lose money? The 2+million box sales wont disappear, it would only increase ANet’s revenue with the gem store. Even if ANet dont change anything to make the store pay 2 win, it would STILL increase ANet’s profit. People can simply be compensated with $60 worth of gems and the ability to play for months before it went f2p. When the expansion comes out, they can charge for the expansion.
Hardly any new people are buying the game anymore because people want to try it first and downloading 30+gb to try out the game for 2-3days even with invites is hardly a incentive.
Everyone benefits from this. You get $60 worth of gems and tons of new people to play with, new players will be able to play the game for free and buy things in the store, should they choose to. Of course, ANet will make more money.

First off this one time sales of 2 mil. Copies doesn’t just sit in a bank earning interest. It pay the employees their salary. It pays for thier office space and utilities. It pays NC soft.
this money needs to be replenished.
Those F2Ps get this moey through a pay to win cash shop and/or sub to get full access.
Nothing is truly free. Anet makes their money through B2P
i cant believe how stupid this idea is.
not being F2P is the sole reason i purchased the game in the first place.
NO WAY
If this happens we’ll be seeing gear sold in the item shop, this game will become pay to win.

Yeah, okay. PS2 is fine. Well except for the hackers. More to the point, except for the horrible little tools buying all the latest hack toys.
And if they get banned they get to make a new account and come right back.
Cheaters/botters is just one reason games should have a fairly substantial box cost in every country they’re sold in.
The cash shop becoming even worse is another reason.
